Mahalo travel expert Asha K. shares travel tips and information on Washington Square Park in New York City, New York.
Overview
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Washington Square Park lies over 9.75 acres in New York City's Greenwich Village at W 4th and MacDougal Streets. It is a great meeting place and center of cultural activity. The park was originally made famous by Henry James's novel Washington Square (1880).c
Nowadays, you will find
New York University students using the park as a de facto campus area, while chess players come out regularly to play their game on any one of the park's 19 concrete tables. Street performers are common, as are poetry readings.c
History
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Washington Square Park used to be a marsh located near the Native American village of Sapokanikan, or Tobacco Field. The Common Council received the land in 1797 with the intent to use it as a burial ground and a field to be used for public executions. This led to the tale of the Hangman's Elm, located in the northwest corner of the park.
In 1826, the park was used as the Washington Military Parade Ground, not becoming a public park until the following year. At the time, wealthy families moved into the area around the park, building the Greek Revival mansions that line the north side of Washington Square to this day.
Fifth Avenue ran through the park until
1964 when the entire site was redesigned and closed to traffic. A $900,000 renovation in 1995 installed bocce courts, game tables and playgrounds.c
Washington Square Arch
---------------------------------------------------------------------
The Washington Square Arch was based on the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, France. It was built out of wood in 1889 to commemorate the centennial of President George Washington's inauguration. It was rebuilt in marble between 1890 and 1892. Both versions were designed by architect Stanford White.
President Washington has two other tributes on the arch itself, both statues installed on the north face of the arch in 1918: Washington as Commander-in-Chief, Accompanied by Fame and Valor by Hermon MacNeil and Washington as President, Accompanied by Wisdom and Justice by Alexander Stirling Calder.
The arch is also a well-known landmark that has been used as a location in notable films like
When Harry Met Sally (1989), as well as television shows like Friends.
Outdoor Art
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Every Memorial and Labor Day weekend, Washington Square Park hosts a large art fair. The tradition was started in 1931 when acclaimed painter Jackson Pollock, in dire need of money to pay rent in his Greenwich Village studio, took several of his paintings and set them up for sale on a sidewalk near the park. He was soon joined by fellow artists and praised by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, founder of the Whitney Museum of Art, and Alfred H. Barr, Jr., director of the Museum of Modern Art. That one act on Pollock's part has blossomed into the current Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibit, attracting artists from around the world twice a year.
Art exhibitors are chosen by a jury of fellow artists and cash prizes are awarded in various categories to exhibit winners.
c
Halloween Parade
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Other special events include a Halloween Parade every October through the park. Known as New York's Village Halloween Parade, it was begun in 1973 by Ralph Lee, a mask maker and puppeteer from Greenwich Village. What began as a walk from house to house in his small neighborhood has grown exponentially to become one of the largest parades in the nation if not the world. Nearly 40 years after its inception, the parade draws over 60,000 participants dressed in costume and nearly 2 million spectators every year.
The parade has won an Obie Award and recognition by the Municipal Arts Society and Citylore for their contribution to the life and culture of New York City.
c
Dog Lovers Delight
---------------------------------------------------------------------
There are two areas for dogs designated in the park, one for smaller breeds and one for larger. Extra lighting and the absence of any toxic plants make Washington Square Park a perfect place to walk your dog.

From Wikipedia:
Midtown Manhattan is the central portion of the borough of Manhattan in New York City. Midtown is home to some of the city's most iconic buildings, including the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, the Hudson Yards Redevelopment Project, the headquarters of the United Nations, Grand Central Terminal, and Rockefeller Center, as well as Broadway and Times Square.
Midtown Manhattan is the largest central business district in the world and ranks among the most expensive pieces of real estate; Fifth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan commands the world's highest retail rents, with average annual rents at US$3,000 per square foot ($32,000/m2) in 2017. However, due to the high price of retail spaces in Midtown, there are also many vacant storefronts in the neighborhood. Midtown is the country's largest commercial, entertainment, and media center, and also a growing financial center.
The majority of New York City's skyscrapers, including its tallest hotels and apartment towers, are in Midtown. The area hosts commuters and residents working in its offices, hotels, and retail establishments, tourists and students. Times Square, the brightly illuminated hub of the Broadway Theater District, is a major center of the world's entertainment industry. Sixth Avenue also has the headquarters of three of the four major U.S. television networks.
Midtown is part of Manhattan Community District 5. It is patrolled by the 14th and 18th Precincts of the New York City Police Department.

The Legendary Dosa Man of NYC - Street Food Icons
Thiru Kumar, AKA the Dosa Man, has been running NY Dosas, a food cart in Greenwich Village's Washington Square Park, since 2001. His dosas-which are made from fermented rice and lentils, and stuffed with potatoes, vegetables and spicy sauces-have become an international phenomenon. Thiru grew up in Sri Lanka and learned to make South Indian recipes as a child. After he immigrated to the United States in the 90s, he made it his life's work to sell affordable, fresh and vegan dosas to NYU students, professors and other passerby's.

New York City - Video Tour of Greenwich Village, Manhattan
Greenwich Village is a small area below 14th Street and west of Broadway. It is famous to have been the home to rebels, nonconformists, beatniks, bohemians and starving artists for over 100 years now. New York Habitat ( ) offers features today a video tour of this great area.
You will find the full article about Greenwich Village on New York Habitat blog
Don't hesitate to discover the other video tours provided by New York Habitat such as Morningside Heights in Harlem or Times Square
Starting in the late 1800s, Greenwich Village became the epicenter of art and music in New York. Artists and musicians from all over flocked to the Village where they found camaraderie, inspiration and affordable housing. The paths of many famous musicians' writers and actors passed through the eclectic streets of Greenwich Village including Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Edgar Allen Poe, and Mark Twain.
Washington Square Park:
A great place to start our tour of Greenwich Village is Washington Square Park. It is home of the famous Washington Square Arch, which was built in the late 1800s to celebrate the centennial of George Washington's inauguration as president of the United States.
The interesting thing about Greenwich Village is that the starving artists were the ones who brought charm and appeal to the area. Ultimately the very appeal they created started attracting wealthier New Yorkers, which drove the prices up and, eventually, caused most starving artists to relocate elsewhere in the city.
Luckily, the charm remains strong in the Village and it's a great place to rent a furnished apartment during your next trip to New York. New York Habitat has tons of apartments throughout the Village and all over New York City.
For example, we have this beautiful one bedroom accommodation in the heart of Greenwich Village (NY-7565) which is just a few blocks away from Washington Square Park.
Another great option is this Greenwich Village two bedroom vacation rental (NY-15468) in the heart of the action on Fifth Avenue.
New York Habitat provides great possibilities of accommodations with vacation rentals & Bed & Breakfast in New York City.
MacDougal Street:
MacDougal Street is a one-way street about 6 blocks long in Greenwich Village. It has been the subject of many songs and poems. It's been frequented by numerous famous individuals including Bob Dylan, Matthew Broderick and Eleanor Roosevelt.
Cafe Wha? - at 115 Macdougal Street
Located at 115 Macdougal Street, Cafe Wha? is a club in Greenwich Village that has been home to various musicians and comedians.
West 4th Street Courts:
At the West 4th Street Courts, also known as The Cage, you will find some of the finest street ball players in the country.
The Speakeasy - 106 Perry Street
In the time of Prohibition back in the 1920's, secret bars known as speakeasies sprung up all over the city. Many were located right here in Greenwich Village. American author Henry Miller opened a short-lived speakeasy in the basement of his home at 106 Perry St.
The Friends Building - 90 Bedford Street
If the names Joey, Monica, Chandler, Ross, Rachel and Phoebe mean anything to you, make sure you visit the corner of Bedford St. & Grove St. in Greenwich Village to pay homage to the Friends' Building. This is the building where the Friends supposedly lived in the hit sitcom we all know and love. In fact, before the producers decided on the title Friends, the working title of the show was Once Upon a Time in the Village.
Narrowest House in NYC -- 75 ½ Bedford St
Coming in at nine and a half feet wide, you'll find the narrowest house in NYC at 75 ½ Bedford St. The Pulitzer Prize winning poet Edna St. Vincent Millay lived there for a short while.
If I've missed some of you're favorite Village must-sees, be sure to leave them share them in the comments below.
And don't forget, one of the best ways to experience Greenwich Village is to live there. What better way to live there than by renting a vacation rental apartment from New York Habitat?
I Love New York City - Washington Square Park
Located at the foot of Fifth Avenue, the park is bordered by Washington Square North (Waverly Place east and west of the park), Washington Square East (University Place north of the park), Washington Square South (West 4th Street east and west of the park), and Washington Square West (MacDougal Street north and south of the park).
While the Park contains many flower beds and trees, little of the park is used for plantings due to the paving. The two prominent features are Washington's Arch and a large fountain. It includes children's play areas, trees and gardens, paths to stroll on, a chess and scrabble playing area, park benches, picnic tables, commemorative statuary and two dog runs.
Giuseppe Garibaldi
Those commemorated by statues and monuments include George Washington; Italian patriot and soldier Giuseppe Garibaldi, commander of the insurrectionist forces in Italy's struggle for unification, and one to Alexander Lyman Holley, a talented engineer who helped start the American steel industry after the invention of the Bessemer process for mass-producing steel.
The New York City Police Department operates security cameras in the park. The New York University Department of Public Safety also keeps a watch on the park, and the city parks department has security officers who sometimes patrol the park. The area has a low crime rate in the safest big city in the United States.
