Wat Bowonniwet Vihara is a first class Royal Buddhist monastery (raja wara maha vihara) of the Dhammayut tradition, located on the northeast side of Bangkok's Ratanakosin island, just inside the old city wall bordering Banglumpoo canal, on Pra Sumeru road. The monastery's name comes from the Pali language: Pavara+niwesa and translates as the Excellent Abode Monastery.
Wat Bowonniwet Vihara, or Wat Bowon for short, has a long and interesting history beginning with the arrival of the first abbot, Prince Mongkut, in 1836. The Prince Bhikkhu, also known by his monastic name, Phra Vajiranyano, was ordained for twenty-seven years, and abbot of Wat Bowonniwet for fourteen, before ascending the throne as Phra Bat Somdet Phra Chom Klao Chao Yu Hua -- better known in English as King Rama IV.
There have been five former abbots here, three of whom were Supreme Patriarchs. The abbots after King Mongkut were:
2.) Somdet Pra Maha Samana Chao Krom Phraya Pavares Variyalongkorn (Phra Ong Chao Rerk), the second abbot from 1851 - 1892,
3.) Somdet Pra Maha Samana Chao Krom Phraya Vajiranyanavarorassa (Phra Ong Chao Manussanagmanop), the third abbot from 1892 - 1921,
4.) Somdet Pra Sangharaj Chao Krom Luang Vajiranyanavongse (Mom Rajawong Chuen Nopavongse), fourth abbot from 1921 - 1958, and
5.) Phra Prommuni (Pin, Suvaco), fifth abbot from 1958 - 1961.
6.) His Holiness Somdet Pra Nyanasamvara (Charoen, Suvaddhano) (or known as Somdet Phra Yannasangwon), Supreme Patriarch of Thailand from 1989 - 2013.
Before the arrival of Venerable Vajiranyano, the area presently occupied by Wat Bowonniwet was actually two different monasteries separated by a canal -- Wat Mai to the north and Wat Rangsee Suddhawas to the south. As Wat Mai was abbotless, King Rama III (1824-1851) requested the Prince Bhikkhu to take over as abbot in 1836. Later, during the reign of king Rama VI (1910-1925), the two monasteries were incorporated into one, resulting in the temples present dimensions.

Wat Bowon - Bangkok - Cleaning Phra Phuttha Chinnasee Buddha
Wat Bowonniwet Vihara Ratchaworawiharn (วัดบวรนิเวศวิหารราชวรวิหาร), or Wat Bowon/Boworn for short, is an important royal Buddhist temple in Bangkok's Phra Nakhon district.
The temple is a center of the Thammayut Nikaya school of Thai Theravada Buddhism and has been a major temple of patronage for the Chakri dynasty.
Its ordination hall enshrines the famous Phra Phuttha Chinnasee Buddha image.
Background
Wat Bowonniwet was built in the reign of King Rama III, by Somdet Phra Woraratchao Maha Sakdipollasep.
In 1923, during the reign of King Rama VI, the nearby Wat Rangsi Sutthawat and Wat Bowon were combined into one temple.
In 1836, during his monkhood, the future King Mongkut (Rama IV# arrived at the temple and became its first abbot. Rama VI and Rama VII also resided at the temple as monks for a time, as did King Bhumibol Adulyadej.
What to see
Enshrined in the ubosot is the Sukhothai-era bronze Phra Phuttha Chinnasee Buddha image #พระพุทธชินสีห์# in the attitude of Subduing Mara.
The image was moved from Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat in Phitsanuloke.
Behind it is Phra Suwannakhet #Phra To# from Phetchaburi.
In front of the Chinnasee Buddha are images of three former princely abbots of the monastery.
Also found in this hall are the distinctive and unique murals painted by well known Thai painter, Khrua In Khong, during King Mongkut's reign.
Behind the ubosot is the large chedi. To the south of the chedi, facing east, is another Buddha image, Phra Dighayumahamongol, affectionately known as Luang Por Dam #Venerable Black Father# due to its dark color before gilding.
Behind it is the Vihara Keng, decorated with murals of scenes from Romance of the Three Kingdoms and housing four Buddha images that represent former abbots of the temple.
In another hall to the south is the Phra Sri Sasada Buddha image and a small but beautiful green stone Buddha from the Dvaravati period.
In a connecting room is the Phra Saiya reclining Buddha. Prince Mongkut found this image abandoned at Wat Pra Pai Luang, Phitsanulok province, and had it moved to Wat Bowonniwet in 1847.
Prince Damrong Rajanuparp, Thai Historian and son of King Mongkut, wrote in Legends of Important Buddha Images, this reclining Buddha image excels all others in beauty.
Other hightlights at the temple are the Sala Dang #Red Pavilion), Buddha Footprint, Bodhi Tree, Walking Buddhas, Laterite Buddha, and a variety of the stone Chinese dolls that were used as ships' ballast in former times.
Getting there
The temple is on Phra Sumeru Road, a few minutes' walk from Khao San Road and Ratchadamnoen Klang, where the aircon bus 511 runs to Sukhumvit.

Wat Bowonniwet Vihara is a first class Royal Buddhist monastery (Thai: raja wara vihara) of the Dhammayut tradition, located on the northeast side of Bangkok’s Ratanakosin island, just inside the old city wall bordering Banglumpoo canal, on Pra Sumeru road. The monastery’s name comes from the Pali language: Pavara+niwesa and translates as the Excellent Abode Monastery.
Wat Bowonniwet Vihara, or Wat Bowon for short, has a long and interesting history. The monastery was founded by Mahasakti Pol Sep, Deputy King of the third reign, in 1824. The history became more complicated with the arrival of the Prince Mongkut, who took up the post of abbot in 1836. The Prince Bhikkhu, also known by his monastic name, Phra Vajiranyano, was ordained for twenty-seven years, and abbot of Wat Bowonniwet for fourteen, before ascending the throne as Phra Bat Somdet Phra Chom Klao Chao Yu Hua — better known in English as King Mongkut, or Rama IV.

6.) His Holiness Somdet Pra Nyanasamvara (Charoen, Suvaddhano), the 19th Supreme Patriarch of Thailand, sixth abbot from 1961-2015.
7.) Somdet Pra Vanarat (Junda, Brahmagutto), seventh abbot from 2015 – present.
Before the arrival of Venerable Vajiranyano, the area presently occupied by Wat Bowonniwet was actually two different monasteries separated by a canal — Wat Mai (New Monastery) to the north and Wat Rangsee Suddhawas to the south. As Wat Mai was abbotless, King Rama III (r. 1824-1851) invited the Prince Mongkut to take over as abbot in 1836. The Temple Precincts
Buddhist monasteries are typically divided into two sections: Buddhavasa, or the sanctuary – buildings and structures devoted to the Buddha, such as the Uposatha hall, the Cetiya or Stupa, etc., and Sanghavasa – or the section containing residential dwellings for monks (bhikkhus) and novices (samaneras).
