Wat Jong Klang temple in Mae Hong Son was built nearly 200 years ago by Thai Yai (Shan) people, who make up about half of the population of Mae Hong Son Province.
Is one of Thailand’s most famous pilgrimage sites. The temple lies at an elevation of 3,520 feet (1,073 m) on the slopes of Mount Suthep, one of Thailand’s highest peaks (5,528 feet [1,685 m]), just outside the city. The Doi Pui National Park occupies 40,000 acres (16,000 hectares) around the mountain. King Kue-Na built the monastery of the complex.
Mae Hong Son town is capital of Mae Hong Son Province. It is in the Shan Hills, near the border with Burma along the banks of the River Pai.

Day 5 Mae Hong Son Loop | AUTHENTIC Northern Thailand
Today is day 5 on the Mae Hong Son Loop. We wake up from our very first Homestay experience in Mueang Pon and it was everything we were looking to find. Amazing hosts, Google Translate conversations and two delicious home cooked meals.
We have another Homestay loosely planned for tonight in the village of Huai Hom which is about 2 hours away so we get on the road to head south.
We stop at a coffee shop in Mae La Noi before turning inland and making our way into the mountains.
We had read that Huai Hom actually has a coffee plantation so we stop there first. We visit their farm and enjoy another cup of coffee with an amazing view.
The village was so small that we were unable to find a place for lunch so we head about 30 minutes back to La Oop, a village we passed on the way to Huai Hom.
We have quite the adventure trying to find a place to eat but we finally find a convenient store that has a young girl making delicious looking food. We walk in and I am sure we looked lost, and she walks over and hands us her phone. She had called a friend who spoke English to translate our order. :)
We enjoy a delicious lunch and because it is getting late, we decide to try and find a place to stay in La Oop instead of making the 30 minute drive back to Huai Hom.
We drive through the center of town and there are several homes with Homestay signs. We knock on a couple of doors trying to see about availability and after a couple of attempts, we meet a great young couple and their small children and they invite us right into their home almost as if they were expecting us.
We take a walk through the village with the mom and son to a beautiful viewpoint overlooking the mountains and several other nearby villages.
We make our way back to their house and it's time to prepare dinner. Even though we are not much help, we watch in fascination of the feast they prepare for us in their traditional wood-fire kitchen. Everything was so DELICIOUS and we go to bed full and happy. Although very little went to our original plan, we could not have asked for a better day!

Je visite le temple Temple Wat Chong Klang dans la ville de Mae Hong Son en Thailande du Nord. Le temple tout en bois est situé au bord du lac. On y voit un Bouddha de rotin original, Ganesh est assis à sa gauche. Les panneaux de bois peint représentant la vie de Bouddha sont très beaux. Une belle atmosphère dans ce lieu.
En compagnie du Wat Chong Kham (วัดจองคำ), le Wat Chong Klang forme le duo de temple le plus célèbre du nord de la Thaïlande.
Logé en bordure du lac de Mae Hong Son, ils se distinguent grâce à la couleur des arrêtes décoratives de leur impressionnante toiture, argentée pour le Wat Chong Kham, et dorée pour le Wat Chong Klang.
Un autre moyen de reconnaitre le Wat Chong Klang par rapport à son voisin est grâce à son imposant stupa blanc de style birman, érigé il y a une centaine d’années.
Les origines du Wat Chong Klang remontent au XIXe siècle, à une époque où Mae Hong Son était dirigée par un monarque d’ethnie shan, ou Tai Yai (ไทใหญ่).
D’abord simple pavillon à l’intention des pèlerins, l’impressionnant édifice actuel fut construit pendant quatre années, de 1867 à 1871, en guise de mérite pour la visite d’un moine birman renommé.
D’après plusieurs panneaux informatifs, ce temple abriterait une réplique du célèbre bouddha Phra Sihing (พระสิหิงค์), dont l’un des originaux est exposé au Wat Phra Sing (วัดพระสิงห์), au centre-ville de Chiang Mai.
Un autre point d’intérêt de ce vaste pavillon, dont le plancher craque sous les pas, est son musée de statuettes.
Sculptées en bois au milieu du XIXe siècle par des artisans birmans, elles représentent des personnages et des animaux issus de la vie légendaire de Vessantara Jataka, c’est-à-dire le récit de la vie antérieure du Bouddha Shakyamuni, une histoire qui peuple l’imaginaire du bouddhisme thaï.

Wat Chong Kham
Wat Chong Kham was originally built in 1827 by Tai Yai artisans during the rule of Phraya Singharat Racha, the fist governor of Mae Hong Son. Unfortunately, the original wooden temple buildings were damaged by a fire in 1970 and much of what can be seen today is a reconstruction.
Wat Chong Klang
The construction of Wat Chong Klang was carried out from 1867-71 as an offering to Burmese monks who were visiting Mae Hong Son for the funeral of an important abbot. One of the most striking features of this temple is the wicker Buddha inside the main viharn. Wat Chong Klang is also famous for the glass paintings depicting the Jataka tales which tell the story of the previous lives of the Lord Buddha.

Mae Hong Son (Thai แม่ฮ่องสอน) (also Maehongson, Mae Hong Sorn or Maehongsorn) is one of the northern provinces (changwat) of Thailand, and at the same time the westernmost. Neighboring provinces are (from north clockwise) Shan State of Myanmar, Chiang Mai and Tak. To the west it borders Kayin State and Kayah State of Myanmar again. It was formerly called Mae Rong Son (also Maerongson, Mae Rong Sorn or Maerongsorn).[1]
Mae Hong Son (The City of Three Mists) is nestled in a deep valley hemmed in by high mountain ranges, Mae Hong Son has long been isolated from the outside world. It is the most mountainous province in Thailand and composed of a total of 13, 814 square kilometers. It is virtually covered with mist throughout the year, the name refers to the fact that this terrain is highly suitable for the training of elephants. Former governors of Chiang Mai used to organize the rounding up of wild elephants which were then trained before being sent to the capital for work. Today, Mae Hong Son is a dream destination for visitors. Daily flights into its small airport bring growing numbers of tourists, attracted by the natural scenery, numerous hill-tribe communities and soft adventure opportunities.
Sights / Attractions
Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu (วัดพระธาตุดอยกองมู) erected by the first governor of Mae Hong Son, this temple reflects the strong influence of the Burmese. The highlights of this attraction are the two lavishly decorated pagodas. Also, this hilltop temple affords an exceptional aerial view of the city and surrounding mountains and valleys.
Tham Pla Pha Suea National Park (อุทยานแห่งชาติถ้ำปลา-ผาเสื่อ) This comprises the following attractions:
Tham Pla (ถ้ำปลา) about 17 kilometres from town, is a popular attraction in Mae Hong Son. The surrounding areas are brooks and cool hilly forests. A special feature is the hollow cave filled with numerous freshwater fish known as Pla Mung or Pla Khang, which is of the same family as the carp. The fish are quite safe from being caught as they are believed to belong to the gods.
Namtok Pha Suea (น้ำตกผาเสื่อ), this waterfall is in Tambon Mokchampae about 26 kilometres from the provincial seat. It is a large fall with its water source in Burma and runs full during the late rainy season.
Ban Rak Thai (บ้านรักไทย), this village is situated 44 kilometres from Mae Hong Son via Namtok Pha Suea near the Thai-Myanmar border. Founded by Kuomintang Chinese soldiers, the village is famous for its views and tea cultivation. An annual Tea Tasting Festival is held at Ban Rak Thai in February.
Wat Nam Hoo (วัดน้ำฮู) at Tambon Wiang Tai, located 3 km. from Pai hospital. This temple housed Phra Un Mueang, sacred Buddha image in Lanna style, 500 years of age, in the attitude of Subduing Mara (victory over Mara). The head of the image could opened and always appears water seepage inside.
Huai Nam Dang National Park (อุทยานแห่งชาติห้วยน้ำดัง) 65km from the district town has excellent views of the sunset, sunrise and misty mountains. Cherry blossom during January adds charms to the attraction.
Bua Tong Fields at Doi Mae U-Kho (ทุ่งดอกบัวตองดอยแม่อูคอ) The Dok Bua Tong (may be classified as wild sunflowers) blooms during November painting the entire hilly area of Doi Mae U-kho in colorful yellow draws flocks of visitors to Khun Yuam district.
Namtok Mae Surin National Park (อุทยานแห่งชาติน้ำตกแม่สุรินทร์), given national park status in 1981, this natural wonder, which straddles Mueang and Khun Yuam districts, encompasses a wildlife and botanical reserve, a huge waterfall and a terraced mountain.
Wat Chong Kham (วัดจองคำ) is located on the bank of the swamp Nong Chong Kham and was built in 1827 by Thai Yai artisans. The pillars are gilded with gold flakes. The temple houses a large Buddha statue with a lap width of 4.85 metres cast by Burmese craftsmen.
Phu Klon Country Club uses natural black mud which has skin care and therapeutic benefits. The area has now been developed into a spa resort.

It is a stark contrast to Pai in the sense that there are much less tourists and it feels quite remote due to its distance from everything. Chong Kham temple or Royal temple, Chong Kham temple Is a temple built in 1797, the first temple in Mae Hong Son city It is an old temple built according to Thai Yai art. What is remarkable is that the roof has 9 floors and has important religious sites. Luang Pho To Temple Which is the largest Buddha statue of Mae Hong Son, built in 2477 B.E. by a Burmese technician In the sanctuary is the shrine of Luang Por To which was built in 1926 by Burmese artisans. And there is a large Buddha image which is modeled from Phra Sri Sakyamuni at Wat Suthat. The reason is called Wat Chong Kham because the temple pillars are decorated with gold leaf.

Kham Chanote portal to the Naga Serpent underworld in Udon province
Kham Chanote is said to be one of three known portals to the underwater world of the naga serpents (known as 'phayanag' by Thai people).
There have been several cases of people winning the lottery after making merit here, so the site is usually crowded with visitors hoping to find out the numbers for the next jackpot.
