WAT MAHABUT ????- Bangkok, Thailand
by yaung bisdak
Wat Mahabut is not known for its historical legacy or its ancient architecture. It is famous for a female ghost, the legendary Mae Nak.
Mae Nak is a native of Phra Khanong and wife of Mak.
Mak was deployed during the war when Mae Nak died with her unborn child during childbirth.
Several movies have been made of this legend since the 1950's.
The latest remake is as recent as 2005. In the movie versions, the ghost is sometimes known as Nang Nak (Mrs Nak).
There is also a TV drama series and even an opera on this legend.
Wat Mahabut is one of the must visit place when in Bangkok for people curious of local legends.

Wat Intharawihan, or Temple of the Standing Buddha in English, is located in the Banglamphu area of Phra Nakhon in central Bangkok. It is a short walk from the famous Khao San Road and several other famous Buddhist temples in the area. The main attraction of the temple of course is the 32 meter (105 ft) high buddha called Luang Pho To. There was no admission fee when I was there but they do appreciate a small donation if you can. Enjoy!

Wat Intharawihan Temple in Bangkok
Bangkok has many Buddhists Wats or temples and some of the popular temples for foreigners have some distinctive features like the Reclining Buddha of Wat Pho, the Golden Buddha of Wat Traimit, The Marble Buddha of Wat benchamabophit and finally, here at Wat Intharawihan, the Large Standing Buddha. The wat is located near the rama VII bridge and there are many local pilgrims here. the highlight is the tall 32 meter Standing buddha which they say has relics of the lord buddha at the top of the statue, where a small connected building is housed. You will also see a chinese buddhist temple in the complex plus some figures of past Chakri Kings of Thailand since the thais believe that their kings are demi gods and such they also worship them and give them offerings.
Thailand, Bangkok: Wat Intharawihan, A walk around the temple of the standing Buddha
The Wat Intharawihan or Wat Indravihan is a Buddhist temple complex close to the Chao Phraya river famous for its enormous standing Buddha image.
The temple itself predates the founding of Bangkok in 1782 and was originally named Wat Rai Phrik. During the reign of King Rama I the temple was restored and renamed Wat Intharam.
The massive standing Buddha which is called Luang Pho To or Phra Si Ariyametri dominates the area with its 32 meters height and 10 meters width.
Construction of the Buddha image started in 1867 during the reign of King Mongkut (Rama IV) and it took 60 years for it to be completed in 1927. The serene looking Buddha image is holding an alms bowl, that monks still use today when they go out in the streets early morning to receive food from lay people.
During the reign of King Vajiravudh (Rama VI) in the early 20th century, after being renovated the temple received its present name of Wat Intharawihan.
In 1964 and 1967, the current King of Thailand, King Bhumibol Adulyadej, Queen Sirikit and their children covered the forehead and the topknot of the Luang Pho To image with gold leaves.
Bangkok Thailand Part 1 Khao San Nightlife | Wat Intharawihan | Chao Phraya | Lumpini Park | Massage
Bangkok has the most important tourist spots and temples of Thailand. This trip happened as a stopover for a few days on the way to India from Los Angeles. It is the main hub of all backpacker routes across Asia with all of these intersecting here. Lots of backpackers live on Khao San road and the quieter road next to it. Khao San road is the most entertaining spot in Bangkok. It is lined up with pretty up anything you are looking for - restaurants, pubs, masssage centers, low budget hotels, hostels, street food, starbucks. Thai people are great performers and sing all sorts of songs from Hollywood, Bollywood and ones from other countries as well.
You must visit Bangkok atleast once in your lifetime. Thai hospitality is amazing and like nowhere else in the world.
