The most famous monk in Koh Samui - Loung Pordaeng.
When he reached the age of 79, Loung Pordaeng is said to have predicted the day of his own death.
He instructed his followers that if his body would decay, he wanted to be cremated. If the body would not decompose however, he wanted his body to be kept in a glass casket in the temple to serve as an inspiration for future generations to follow the teachings of the Buddha.
It is believed that the last week of Loung Pordaeng’s life, he did not eat, drink or speak to anyone while meditating. Finally, he died in 1973 at the age of 79 while meditating.
Because the eyeballs have dried out which is an unpretty sight, the mummified body is now wearing sunglasses.

KOH SAMUI - Wat Khunaram ( Mummy Monk Temple )
Wat Khunaram is a Buddhist temple most notable for being the shrine of the Mummy Monk, Luang Pho Daeng, who died in 1973 and directed that his body be put on display as a reminder of the transience of human existence. It is located 13 km southeast of Nathon, the island's capital city and main port, and 6 km west of the resort town of Lamai Beach. (Wikipedia)
The Mummified Monk Thailand Koh Samui
The well-preserved, Mummified body of the monk named Loung Por Ruam is the one and only Mummified Monk. He first sat down here 30 years ago. 25 years ago, people realized he was dead, and pickled him. He still looks remarkably good. Step in this Wat for a few minutes and take a good look at this mummy. This is the only mummy you will ever see that wears sunglasses, other than Madonna. Admission to the temple is free, but guests are reminded to dress in modest clothing and to remove sunglasses before entering.
The Mummified Monk still has some hair, fingernails and very leathery skin, but dont touch it!
The story behind this one, as the legend goes, is that 'Loung Pordaeng' a wealthy resident of Koh Samui who gave up all his earthly wealth when he became a Buddhist, died, in 1973, His followers noticed that he was not decaying, so they displayed him in a glass coffin, believing this to be a Buddhist miracle, despite the monks vociferous protests. He is still on display today, looking pretty good for his age, but not very happy.
The mummified monk is in a temple, Wat Khunaram, situated on the south coast between Ban Thurian and Ban Hua Thanon, on the road between Nathon and Lamai, 10 minutes drive from Hin Tai and Hin Yai, after the junction to the water fall and the temple is on your left.
Mummified Monk - Koh Samui - VLOG
We took a scooter ride round Thailand's Koh Samui Island and found the Mummified Monk!
Loung Pordaeng was born in 1894 in Koh Samui. When he was around 20 years old, he ordained as a monk,
Upon reaching the age of 50 when his children had grown up, Loung Pordaeng decided to return to the temple and dedicate the rest of his life to Buddhism. He was given the name Phra Kru Samathakittikhun upon returning to the temple.
Loung Pordaeng excelled in meditation skills, was an excellent teacher and had many followers. When he reached the age of 79, Loung Pordaeng is said to have predicted his own death.

Luang Po Daeng died in the same position, as we can see him. He is in perfect condition and died in 1973 at the age of 79 years. On the head you can still see some hair. His eyes fell on his head, so you have provided him with sunglasses. He's still sitting in the original position of meditation.

Mummified Monk
The monk Luong Pordaeng died in 1973 in a seated meditative position, and ever since his body has been on display in an upright glass case at the temple. Remarkably, even more than 30 years on the monk's body shows little sign of decay. By the passing of the years though, his eyes had 2 be covered by the sunglasses due the creepy eye hollows. Shot by Sony TX10 in Full HD (1080i) resolution setting at 24M (FX quality).
