The Phimai historical park protects one of the most important Khmer temples of Thailand. It is located in the town of Phimai, Nakhon Ratchasima province.
The temple marks one end of the Ancient Khmer Highway from Angkor. As the enclosed area of 1020x580m is comparable with that of Angkor Wat, Phimai must have been an important city in the Khmer empire. Most buildings are from the late 11th to the late 12th century, built in the Baphuon, Bayon and Angkor Wat style. However, even though the Khmer at that time were Hindu, the temple was built as a Buddhist temple,[1] as Buddhism in the Khorat area dated back to the 7th century. Inscriptions name the site Vimayapura (which means city of Vimaya), which developed into the Thai name Phimai

Thailand's Department of Fine Arts spent 17 years restoring the complex to its original state from 1971 to 1988. On 21 May 1988, the park was officially opened by Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.[1] In 2005, the temple was submitted to UNESCO for consideration as a future World Heritage Site.

Wat Hua Thanon liegt nördlich von Sadao in der Nähe von Hat Yai im Süden Thailands. Sie werden es aufgrund seines großen weißen sitzenden Buddha-Bildes bemerken. Vor dem großen Buddha befindet sich ein kleiner Skulpturengarten mit einigen interessanten Skulpturen.

Wat Hua Thanon is located just north of Sadao near Hat Yai in southern Thailand. You will notice it because of its big white sitting Buddha image. In front of the large Buddha you will find a small sculpture garden with some interesting sculptures.
If you are traveling from the Sadao border crossing at the Malaysian border to Hat Yai you will pass this temple complex. It is located on the main road from Sadao to Hat Yai.

Bereits acht Jahre nach dem Tod Buddhas soll hier von fünf Königen des sagenhaften Königreichs Si Gotapura ein erster 8 m hoher Bau errichtet worden sein. Um 1614, während der Lan Xang-Periode (Laos), wurden die Seiten des Heiligtums neu gestaltet und die Anlage mit einer Mauer umgeben. Annähernd seine heutige Form in laotischem Stil erhielt der That um 1690, als ihn der Mönch Phra Khru Luang Phonsamek auf 47 Meter Höhe aufstocken ließ. Außerdem wurden zahlreiche Verzierungen und eine Spitze aus 16 Kilogramm purem Gold angebracht. Die Plastiken sowie die Blumenornamente an den Außenseiten des That entstanden während der Rattanakosin-Periode um 1901. 1941 wurde der That erstmals renoviert und auf seine heutige Höhe von 57 Metern (anderen Quellen zufolge lediglich 52 Meter) gebracht. 1975 wurde er durch starke Gewitterschauern stark beschädigt und musste deshalb bis 1979 ein weiteres Mal renoviert werden. Es heißt, der Turm sei damals mit 110 Kilogramm Gold vergoldet worden.
