Wat Pan Tao, Chiang Mai, Loy Krathong, 2014
Loy Krathong is a great festival in Chiang Mai and Wat Pan Tao is a great place to celebrate it. The rituals here are more spiritual than most of the other events and certainly more so than Mae Jo which is now impossibly crowded.
Unfortunately I got there quite late and was at the back of a large crowd. People with smart phones on sticks, people who like to jostle videographers and lots and lots of shutter clicking. Of about 60 minutes, I’ve tried to recover this.So this video is technically poor, but I’m posting it to to show you how this is possibly the nicest celebration in Chiang Mai at Loy Krathong . But please don’t all come next year, I’ll get there early and hope to do much better. If you do come, please don’t put your camera in front of mine, nor push my elbow so that you can get past!
Happy Loy Krathong, a great experience

Wat Chedi Luang and Wat Phan Tao Chiang Mai Thailand ????????
Chiang Mai Thailand
Wat Chedi Luang Worawihan, Wat Doi Suthep and Wat Phan Tao are just some of the few Buddhist temples in Chiang Mai. Most of the temples are situated within old city of Chiang Mai and these temples are closely located so if you don't mind walking you could visit each and every temple. Otherwise there are songthaews in Chiang Mai and you can hop on it and pay just 10 - 20 baht and you could get to any temple.
I love traveling and I have traveled to many countries..but my most favorite country is Thailand and then comes the Philippines, there are more 7 thousands beautiful, exotic and tropical islands in the Philippines. Temples in Chiang Mai City (Wat Chedi Luang, Wat Prasingh, Wat Pan Tao)
The city of Chiang Mai has a wealth of beautiful and historic Buddhist Wats (temples)
Wat Chedi Luang, located in the center of the old city wall, is home to the highest pagoda in the northern part of Thailand. It is over 500 years old. At the base of the pagoda there is a tunnel. According to legend, it was built by King Tilokarach to be used as a secret passage way for kings to flee enemies. It is also said that there is a kind of mechanism that will punish those who do not have virtue to enter the tunnel. The temple later built an iron gate forbidding people in. What a shame!
Only a few people know of Wat Pan Tao, a small interesting temple located close to Wat Chedi Luang. Many call Wat Pan Tao a stamp of Wat Chedi Luang because it is small and located in a small corner of Wat Chedi Luang.
The chapel of Wat Pan Tao is over a hundred years old, very small and built entirely of teak wood. A magnificent model of a peacock carved out of teak wood adorns above the entrance of the viharn. Dont miss Wat Pan Tao.

WAT CHEDI LUANG COMPLEX | PHRA CHAO ATTAROT BUDDHA | WAT PHAN TAO | CHIANG MAI ATTRACTIONS
Wat Chedi Luang is one of Chiang Mai’s most noteworthy attractions as well as one of the most important temples in the city. “Luang” means large in the Northern Thai dialect and the name is apt for the sprawling site where the temple sits. Whether you’re visiting Chiang Mai for a few days or a longer stay, it’s well worth your travel time to visit the temple. Read on for everything you need to know about getting to Wat Chedi Luang and what to expect when you’re there.
History
Wat Chedi Luang was built between the 14th and 15th centuries and at the time would have been the most impressive temple in Chiang Mai. It remains one of the tallest temples in the city, but at one time the pinnacle of the chedi (pagoda) rose over 80 meters (well over 260 feet) into the air.
A large earthquake (or cannon fire—there are conflicting accounts) substantially damaged the chedi and it now measures around 60 meters (197 feet) high. Wat Chedi Luang is also famous for once housing the Emerald Buddha, one of the most important religious relics in Thailand. It was moved to Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Dawn) in Bangkok in 1475, but there is a now a jade replica housed at the temple, which was given to the city as a gift from the Thai king in 1995 to celebrate the 600th anniversary of the chedi.
A restoration project by UNESCO and the Japanese government in the 1990s worked towards restoring the temple to some of its former glory, but the main goal was to stabilize the site to prevent further damage. The top of the chedi was never reconstructed because there was no clear idea as to what it originally looked like before the destruction.
What to See
Since the grounds of Wat Chedi Luang are quite large, there’s lots to see on a visit. The most prominent feature here is, of course, the massive chedi that dominates the area and it is an impressive and photo-worthy site. The base of the chedi has five elephant sculptures on the south side and all four sides of the chedi have large staircases that are flanked by naga (serpents) giving the structure a mythical feel. At the top of the staircases there are small niches containing stone Buddha images, though in the niche on the eastern side of the chedi is where the replica of the Emerald Buddha was placed.
On the temple grounds you’ll also find two viharns (sanctuaries or prayer halls), the larger of which houses a beautiful standing Buddha statue known as Phra Chao Attarot. In addition to the main viharn and the chedi, the temple grounds contain a smaller building where you’ll find a reclining Buddha and another building containing the city pillar (Sao Inthakin), believed by locals to protect the city.
Wat Phan Tao, another temple, also lies on the grounds of Wat Chedi Luang. While much smaller than its massive neighbor, the beautifully-carved teak temple is well worth a look if you’re already planning to check out Wat Chedi Luang. The serene gold Buddha in the main prayer hall and small garden around back are highlights.
Wat Phan - Chaing Mai, Thailand
Wat Chedi Luang & Chiang Man *Men Only Temple!*
we continue right off from our Vlog #8 trip up to Wat Doi Suthep in the morning. We start with a quick breakfast that we worked hard to bargain for. We than head out to Old Town Chiang Mai for our temple hopping adventures.
Although there are countless of temples in Chiang Mai, and over a dozen just in the Old Town ChiangMai area alone, we decide to only visit the top 3 rated temples on TripAdvisor as we only had a day here and wanted to have plenty of time to explore each temple. So in this vlog, we try to answer this frequently asked question. Which temples are the best temples to visit in Chiang Mai. With the help of trip advisor and us, we hope you can decide for yourself which temple is the best temple to visit in Chiangmai.
First we headed to Wat (Temple) Chedi Luang. This temple is located centrally in the Old Town area of ChiangMai, and it was the #1 rated temple on TripAdvisor, and closest to our guesthouse. This temple had the highest entrance fee of all the temples we visited in ChiangMai of 40 Baht.
This particular temple provided our other female friend w a simple, tasteful black skirt to wrap around her short shorts free of charge. Not sure what they provide for people who come dressed in tank tops but I've been forced to wear sweaty dress shirts in other occasions before at other temples so please be aware of dress codes before visiting any temples in Thailand.
The first building you run into at the Wat Chedi Luang compound is a mens only building located right off the entrance. It seems insignificant as it's a small building compared to the larger main temple located to the right, but it was amazing. As you'll see in the video, I have yet to come across such a detailed, colorful, and interesting wall art in my travels so far. It covers every inch of the wall and ceiling, and it seems to illustrate the history of Buddhism in Thailand. Wish I had more time to admire the art work but the women were waiting outside feeling left out so we headed outside quickly to start our all gender inclusive tour of Wat Chedi Luang.
Women should not find this single men-only building a reason to not visit this amazing temple. Even without it, you have this large and what looks like a very old Chedi (a Buddhist stupa) outside. What really makes this particular one stand out is that it's not covered in gold like the majority of other Chedi you will come across in Thailand. It had an authentic, historical feel to it. The view of the sun peaking through the sides was amazing and awe inspiring.
We also visited two separate shrines of very realistic wax figures of what was described to us of very famous high monks that have passed away. It was definitely impressionable. We than walked into the main temple after taking our shoes off to hear monks chanting up front. We are not allowed into the area where the monks are chanting but can view from behind them.
Mayu also decided to donate to the temple and purchase 2 gold leaflets to adorn the buddha statue at the entrance of the temple. She accidentally got one of the leaflets onto her hand. After, she took some photos for her Mayu.et.Gaspard Instagram with her doll and we headed outside to 7-11 to have a quick bite of sausages and their famous paninis before we headed over to our next temple.
We than headed north to the northern part of Old Town Chiang Mai on our scooters where the oldest temple is located, Wat Chiang Man. To our surprise Wat ChiangMan had no entrance fees. It's relatively a smaller temple compared to Wat ChediLuang, but it has its charms.
It also contained 1800 and 2500 year old crystal and marble statues of Buddah. Quite small but interesting. The main attraction of this temple was however located in the back. A relatively small chedi but charming with its numerous elephants and a combination of exposed stone and gold exterior. We must have been the only foreigners in the temple aside from a few locals there to pray. Its a charming temple that is free, peaceful, and quiet if you want to spend an afternoon meditating.
