Wat Phra That Si Chom Thong Worawihan
Highly revered Buddhist temple complex near Chiang Mai dating from 1451
Wat Phra That Si Chom Thong, Chiang Mai
The Wat Phra That Si Chom Thong is one of the oldest and most highly revered temples in North Thailand
The temple that is officially named Wat Phra That Si Chom Thong Worawihan is very highly revered, because of the sacred Buddha relic that is enshrined here.
The Wat Phra That Si Chom Thong was constructed halfway through the 15th century at the spot where the Buddha relic was found. The oldest structure is the chedi, that was built around 1450. The chedi is a large golden structure with a square base and a spire on top.
The viharn with the sacred Buddha relic
The temple grounds contain two. The largest viharn is a two storey building with a cruciform floor plan. A mondop like structure is built on top of the roof. This viharn contains the Buddha relic, named the Phra Boromathat Chom Thong relic, from which the temple gets its fame.
This wat contains the Chom Thong Insight meditation center. Meditation classes are open to both Thai people and foreigners, and are conducted in Thai and English. The meditation center is located behind the temple grounds, with accommodation available to students of meditation.

The viharn was built to a cross-shaped floor plan. The tastefully arranged, gilded wood carvings on the side gables, cornices and portals, as well as the ornamentation of the teak columns and beams inside, are of outstanding artistic quality. Incredible Gold and Silver Buddha Images at Wat Phra That Si Chom, Thailand
Lanna-style Wat Pra That Si Chom Thomg Wora Wiharan isn't just any old temple. This temple has a pavilion filled with precious gold and silver Buddha images as well as a few and crowns placed on spires with rubies and diamonds. The last time I saw items of such value was in Phnom Penh's Royal Palace and they are really incredible. The Wat is one of the oldest and most highly revered temples in North Thailand and according to local legend, the Buddha once visited the hill where the temple now stands.
A sacred relic, reputed to be a piece of Buddha's skull is taken out and put on display for people to worship at important ceremonies.
A visit here is not part of the Cultural Mae Hong Son Loop but Chom Thong (Chomthong) is along the road between Chiang Mai and Doi Inthanon. Since you'll probably stop somewhere along this road for lunch, tell your guide to make 10 minutes for this magnificent Wat, admission is free.

Sati Vipassana retreat at Chom Tong Temple Thailand
Vipassana, a word in Pali (the language that Buddha was speaking) means to see things clearly” and is the mindfulness meditation technique based on Buddha’s teachings.
Many people interested in yoga will know the #Vipassana meditation which is kind of “in recently, practised in Dhamma centres all around the world through Goenka method. You need to apply in anticipation and usually centers are quite full.
InThailand I had the chance to practice Sati Vipassana with the method of Mahasi Sayadaw which has nothing to do with Goenka’s method. lt includes walking and sitting meditation and helps you to see things clearly in a very very different way.
Chom Tong temple is 1,5 hours to Chiang Mai and the retreat is conducted in the beautiful surroundings of the temple, with monks around. During my stay there were 200-300 monks due to the rainy season (they don’t travel during Moonson season).
Little information about the rules: Lay people and nuns wear white sleeved shirt and trousers, women with an additional white scarf. Hair tied up, no make up, not any little adornment, no perfumes, no nail lacquer. Rooms are private and if you are lucky like me you have a bed with a thin mattress.
Wake up gong is at 4 am and until you go to bed at 10 pm, all day meditation. 6 am breakfast served, 11 am lunch served in the dining hall. After noon, no food is served and you are allowed to consume only liquids, coffee tea and milk, yoghurt, plain cheese or plain chocolate, no fruits and nothing solid.
8 precepts are followed.
Talking is not strictly prohibited as in Dhamma centres, but you are not allowed to share anything about your practice. Once a day you talk to your instructor for 15 minutes, to report your experience and receive your daily practice. No internet, no books, no writing. You can’t kill any being, not even mosquitoes, for sure there are plenty. You are allowed to go out to the food market.
As you see you can also keep your phone with you.
Sounds terrifying?
Not at all. House only for sheltering, clothes only for covering, eating only to eliminate feeling of hunger and not to create a new feeling of overeating as Buddha taught, plus talking only when necessary was quite relaxing.
The challenging part is spending time with your own mind, getting crazy in your mental pollution and emotional turbulence. Because this is not a technique to suppress your mind. It never stops and you try to get to the present moment and learn mindfulness.
And at the end of 20 days, I was blessed by the 95 years old venerable Ajarn Tong Sirimangalo, the head of the Chom Tong Temple, who had his training directly with Mahasi in Myanmar. He is Thailand’s greatest master and the vipassana center of the temple hosts many Thai and international people. I also had the honor of receiving the wise talk of Khun That Chindaporn, the director of the international center.
Sati Vipassana is a way to discover many things and attachments in yourself, and a very good practice of Buddha’s teachings, which are hard to understand theoretically. I personally had very interesting illusionary experiences.
It was quite intense, too tough. I suffered a lot, gained a lot. As Buddha said, the reason of suffering is happiness. And the way to happiness is suffering. I didn’t even know that I was suffering!
Thanks to Buddha, 2500 years after his presence on this earth, still showing a way to people to discovery of self and the truth.
