Wat Saket “The Golden Mount”, Bangkok (2018)
Wat Saket, popularly known as the Golden Mount, is one of Bangkok’s oldest temples.
The structure that Wat Saket is best known for is its 80 meter high hill called “Golden Mount”. It was once the highest point in Bangkok.
To reach the stupa on top of the Golden Mount requires a 318 steps climb up the hill.
On one of the platforms on the way to the top you will find a line of large prayer bells that Buddhist people strike producing a very deep tone.
Once upstairs you will have great views of Bangkok in all directions.
The Wat Saket temple itself is located at the base of the hill.
Most visitors miss it, just climbing to the stupa on top of the hill.

City location: Bangkok (bkk)
Country location: Thailand
The full name of Wat Saket is Wat Saket Ratcha Wora Maha Wihan. Wat Saket is also known as the temple of the golden mount, temple of the golden mountain, golden mount, golden mountain, and is locally known as Phu Khao Thong.
Wat Saket is one of the most famous temples in Thailand.
Wat Saket is an ancient buddhist temple on a 80 meter tall hill. The top of the temple is decorated with a golden pagoda, also called ''chedi''. This is why Wat Saket is also known as temple of the golden mount and temple of the golden mountain.
The hill and temple are decorated with many trees, plants, flowers, statues, sculptures, and bells, which makes this place enjoyable for walking around and sightseeing. To get to the top of the temple you must climb around 300 steps that are placed in a circle around the temple. During the climb you can enjoy beautiful views of Bangkok, and at the top of the temple you can enjoy a 360 degree view of Bangkok.
Originally, in the 18th century, Wat Saket was a crematorium and dumping ground for 60,000 plague victims. It was used as a place to cremate the dead. Now the temple is used for worshipping.
Wat Saket is located on Chakkraphatdi Phong Road in the Pom Prap Sattru Phai district of Bangkok.

The Golden Mount at Wat Saket
Built on an artificial man-made hill, the Golden Mount is the temple’s most well-known landmark and is a sacred pilgrimage site during the weeklong worshipping period in November. To get to the top requires a climb up some 300 steps, which encircle the chedi like a loosely coiled snake. The path is well-paved and the climb relatively easy if you avoid going at midday or during peak summer months.
Before beginning the climb, you will find an unusual cemetery built into the base of the Golden Mount. Covered in vines and overgrown trees, it emits a rather spooky out-of-era vibe. Perhaps this is because in the late 18th century, Wat Saket served as the capital's crematorium and the dumping ground for some 60,000 plague victims. Approaching the top of the hill, you will be welcomed by a wall of bells and panoramas of historic Bangkok.

Wat Saket - The Golden Mount - Bangkok - Thailand
The yellow hill crowned with a gleaming gold chedi is also known as the Golden Mount, or 'Phu Khao Thong'. It rises within the compound of Wat Saket, an unusual temple that houses Buddha relics within its 58-metre-high chedi surmounted by a golden cupola.
Built by King Rama I just outside the new city walls, the late 18th century temple served as the capital's crematorium. During the following 100 years, the temple became the dumping ground for some 60,000 people with the plague.
The Golden Mount was added to the compound in the early 19th century, when King Rama III built a huge chedi which collapsed into a hill of rubble.
Buddhist belief holds that religious buildings cannot be destroyed, and many years later King Rama V topped the debris with another chedi in which he placed relics, believed by some to be the Buddha's teeth.
