Vietnam water puppet, Hanoi Water Puppet, Vietnam Countryside
Water puppetry puppets that dance on water) is a tradition that dates back as far as the 11th century when it originated in the villages of the Red River Delta area of northern Vietnam. Today's Vietnamese water puppetry is a unique variation on the ancient Asian puppet tradition.
The puppets are made out of wood and then lacquered. The shows are performed in a waist-deep pool. A large rod supports the puppet under the water and is used by the puppeteers, who are normally hidden behind a screen, to control them. Thus the puppets appear to be moving over the water. When the rice fields would flood, the villagers would entertain each other using this form of puppet play.
Content
The theme of the skits is rural and has a strong reference to Vietnamese folklore. It tells of day-to-day living in rural Vietnam and Vietnamese folk tales that are told by grandparents to their grandchildren. Stories of the harvest, of fishing and of festivals are highlighted.
Legends and national history are also told through short skits. Many of the skits, especially those involving the tales of day-to-day living, often have a humorous twist.

Exploring HANOI, VIETNAM | Museums & Traditional Water Puppet Show [Travel Vlog]
We arrived in Hanoi and spent the first rainy day visiting multiple museums as well as a traditional water puppet show! We visited the Hoa Lo Prison which was a prison used by the French colonists in French Indochina for political prisoners, and later by North Vietnam for U.S. prisoners of war during the Vietnam War. It was interesting seeing this from the Vietnamese perspective as it highlighted how well the US prisoners were treated, and made us think about what we had learned growing up about this war, as I'm sure both sides need to be taken with a grain of salt. We then got food and ended the night with a water puppet show which was fantastic!
Stay tuned for next Sunday's video where we explore the Ho Chi Minh memorial!

Vietnam Travel Guide: Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Ho Chi Minh
Gorgeous beaches, fascinating and complicated history, incredible food, lush nature; Vietnam is a country that truly has it all. Whether this country is first or fiftieth on your list, our travel guide has all the information you need to know if you’re planning (or dreaming of planning!) a trip to Vietnam.
Leave your expectations behind if you’re heading to Vietnam: here, you’ll eat noodles for breakfast, do your shopping in the middle of the night, and discover a country with a new story around every corner.
Hanoi more than delivers on urban excitement. If you’re looking for unique and mouth-watering food, the night markets of the Vietnamese capital should be your very first stop. You can enjoy a zippy ride on a scooter, all the street-food you can eat, and a night exploring the rapid development of this modern city. From trendy clubs to traditional puppet shows, experience a nightlife that’s all Vietnam’s own, and eat and drink the night away with locals and visitors alike!
Of course, Vietnam isn’t all fast-paced cities and rooftop bars. For a slower pace, head to Ha Long Bay and sail alongside limestone islets, with their lush rainforests towering above your head. The water is emerald-green, matching the vibrant greenery, and a sailing excursion here is like nothing else you’ve experienced before! A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the islets of Ha Long Bay are said have been thrown into the bay by a dragon protecting the people of Vietnam. Take a junk boat tour for a close encounter, or try scuba diving or snorkelling in the bay!
You’ll find a new adventure around every corner in Vietnam. From breakfast in the Bình Tây Market and a secret tunnel system in Ho Chi Minh City, to sailing along the Mekong Delta in a traditional basket boat, you can find your perfect trip - no matter what that looks like - somewhere in Vietnam.
There’s no time like the present to start planning an adventure of your own in this majestic country, so why not start today? Head over to TourRadar to explore the range of tours available, or watch more of our videos exploring Vietnam if you still haven’t gotten enough of seeing the beautiful views and incredible adventures you could be having.

Vietnamese Water Puppet Show - Behind The Scene - Never Seen Before - Vietnam Travel Blog
Biggest puppets are getting lowered down into the water at 9:10
During our For 91 Days in Saigon we visited a classic Vietnamese Water Puppet show, we afraid we're not going to like it since they look a bit cheese but to our surprise we actually loved it.
So when we had the chance to see a water puppet show from behind the scene we didn't say now. So interesting, the amount of people, figures and all the different strings to pull to make sure the water puppet show goes down smoothly.
This video gives you a secret behind the scenes look on how these artists are setting up these water puppet shows. Everything is in sync and tune and everyone know exactly what they have to do without standing in the way of other puppet player.

Welcome to our page. Thanks for checking us out!
We had a few days to spend in Hanoi before heading to Cat Ba Island! We saw a couple must sees and explored some great local joints. A fun night out for Halloween never hurt either! We had some great food but the star of the show was the Pho on 13 Lo Duc. Best Pho in Vietnam!
Fun but fast.

City Description:
Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, is known for its centuries-old architecture and a rich culture with Southeast Asian, Chinese and French influences. At its heart is the chaotic Old Quarter, where the narrow streets are roughly arranged by trade. There are many little temples, including Bach Ma, honoring a legendary horse, plus Đồng Xuân Market, selling household goods and street food.Other landmarks include One Pillar Pagoda, a tiny temple atop a stone pillar, and the 11th-century Temple of Literature, once home to a Confucian academy. French colonial buildings dot the city, from the neoclassical Opera House to the Gothic Revival St. Joseph’s Cathedral. The mausoleum of Communist leader Ho Chi Minh and a museum at Hoa Lo Prison (also known as the Hanoi Hilton, which held prisoners of war) recall the Vietnam War. Cultural activities range from tai chi martial arts around Hoàn Kiếm Lake to traditional chamber music and water puppetry.
Weather and Events:
Most visitors come in Nov–Dec and Mar–Apr, when the weather is generally warm and clear. The tropical climate is humid year-round, with a hot and rainy monsoon season May–Sep. Important holidays include Tết, or Vietnamese New Year (Jan/Feb, dates vary); the Full Moon/Mid-Autumn Festival (Aug/Sep, dates vary); and National Day (Sep 2), celebrated with fireworks and boat races on the lake.
