Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Waukesha (#207)
[Latest Airdate: September 22, 2016]
[Original Airdate: February 21, 2013]
We knew about the Les Paul connection, but there are so many gems in Waukesha that were a joy to discover. This was our first (and maybe only) five points community. A magic and joke shop, great chocolate, sewing supplies, beads, great food, old-fashioned ice cream and tattoos, all within about a five minute walk. Add the oldest college in the State, 27 guitars (10 of them are giant!), and put John McGivern in a giant pink flamingo, and then we knew we really had something! And best of all, we dispelled our fear that we wouldn't find our way back out! But after spending the week, we weren't too eager to leave anyway. The Sha is hot! (7 of 13)

Downtown Waukesha
here's is the lovely downtown Waukesha, Wisconsin area.
here i am walking from the Five Points area near Main Street and Grand Ave. towards the Fox River by the RiverWalk on Barstow Street.
this City has really become a nice city to live in. it may not be Disney Land here, but it's home.
there's so much to see and do. lots of shops to grab a bit or buy that new couch or outfit at. or maybe play jokes on someone if you stop by the Joke Shop and bought some funny gags.
the RiverWalk area is really nice. i love visiting the river.
you'll see a Discount liquor store, i like that place. yes it's mainly for adults due to beer, wine and other alcohol reasons, but you can bring your kids too, to get sodas, water or other snacks. it's a nice place to get your snacks and drink supplies to have while you're watching the GreenBay Packers beat the Bears, or go on to win another Super Bowl.
you'll see a lot of restaurants and a nice antique store. you'll find really nice things at the antique store. there's a lot of them through out the Downtown area.
there's also a Panos fruit market, a real nice down to earth store for those who like shopping but are on a budget. they have nice fruits and vegetables and authentic Mexican foods to choose from. there's also a Panos market over on Sunset Drive.
back to the riverwalk. it's a nice place to fish off the pier or just sit and relax. there's a water fountain that you can stick your feet in on a hot summer day like today (8/5/2011). the City map you'll see near the Riverwalk, it needs to be updated soon if possible. many streets and areas have been built since 1993. that's when this map was added to the Riverwalk area.
if you ever drive through the city of Waukesha and drive through the downtown area, make sure to talk a drive and maybe stop in these places to grab a bite, or see a parade, or by yourself that nice new outfit.

here's a video i made near the Silvernail area today 8/5/2011
Beyond The End of the Trail: American Indians and the Panama-Pacific International Exposition
Many Americans easily recognize James Earle Fraser’s famous statue, The End of the Trail, which first appeared at the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition. But despite its popularity, the statue does not accurately represent the participation of American Indians in the fair. Instead, during the nine months of the PPIE, Indians rode in cars and airplanes, performed traditional ceremonies, admired the attractions of the Zone and the rest of the fair, attacked Custer, met Father Serra, deposited money in the bank, and smoked cigarettes. They maintained their Indian identities while taking advantage of the novel and economic opportunities the fair offered, whether that meant a new set of teeth, a ride in an airplane, money to send home to their families, or a platform for campaigning for better treatment by the government. Although the vanishing race rhetoric expressed by the statue complemented the PPIE’s larger messages about progress, expansionism, and conquest, analysis of the performances, daily lives, and media depictions of the fair reveals a multiplicity of discourses about the relationship between Indians and U.S. culture.
Abigail Markwyn is associate professor of history at Carroll University in Waukesha, Wisconsin. She is author of Empress San Francisco: the Pacific Rim, the Great West, and California at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition, and co-editor of Gendering the Fair: Histories of Women and Gender at World’s Fairs.
Milwaukee: A City Built on Water | Program |
[Original Airdate: April 22, 2015]
Historian John Gurda explores how the Milwaukee River and Lake Michigan spurred Milwaukee's growth. The settlers used rivers and Lake Michigan to transport grain, lumber, leather and beer, but water was just as important for play as it was for work. Gurda explains how the Milwaukee River became a destination for fun. Learn how the lower Milwaukee River was eventually reduced to an open sewer by 1900, with Lake Michigan suffering similar indignities. Only in recent decades have the currents turned for the better. From the Milwaukee River Greenway to the reborn Menomonee Valley to the cultural theme park on our downtown lakefront, the patterns of the past are being reversed, providing cause for celebration as well as concern.

Ashippun Lake, Waukesha County, Wisconsin 6-2-2017
Went out after work and got chased off the main lake by a water skier. Wow, those were some bad waves. Went back into a very shallow area with lily pads and tried a floating and weedless frog. Got a couple of bites and landed 2 fish. One, the second one, got stuck and I had to reel in my kayak to the place where the bass was. I will be better prepared next time I go back there. I have a stronger rod but I wasn't planning on going back there so I left it in the car. These were my first frog fish. I look forward to the next time!

Forest Lake, Waukesha County, Wisconsin 6 24 2017
Got out this morning and got only 2 fish but they were on back to back casts. First fish hit almost right when the Little Cleo spoon hit the water. The second one got into the weeds so it didn't fight as hard but it was a little bigger than the first. These were very dark bass. Must be because of the many weeds that are in the lake.

WPT Here and Now: Exploring Foxconn's Wisconsin Plans
Wednesday afternoon, Taiwanese tech giant Foxconn announced plans to build a $10 billion plant to manufacture LCD screens in Wisconsin, a deal that is expected to bring some 3,000 jobs initially, and up to 13,000 eventually. Wisconsin is offering an incentive package worth $3 billion over 15 years, which would only be awarded if Foxconn creates the jobs and pays an average salary of nearly $54,000.
Frederica Freyberg will interview Beijing-based economics expert Einar Tangen about Foxconn’s global practices, and University of Wisconsin-Madison economist Steven Deller about approaches to state incentives for Foxconn.
In addition, Freyberg will travel to Racine to interview private property owners who have been approached by Foxconn to sell their land for factory development.
