Aloha Hawaii - Surfing Kihei, Upcountry Maui Ohana, Overlanding at Kanaio, Ep. 5
We finished our road trip across the United States, and spent the month of November and Thanksgiving with Jenny’s family in Georgia. In December we traveled to Cleveland to visit Adams family for Christmas and the holidays. On New Years Eve we flew to Hawaii, where we plan on spending the next few months.
Things we did and tried to accomplish in Hawaii:
- Learn how to surf
- Hike Haleakala from summit to sea level
- Learn how to play beach volleyball
- Spent time with family in upcountry Maui
- Learn how to cook Filipino / Hawaiian food
- go spearfishing and cook a fish
- Visit and hike in Oahu
- Learn how to shoot a bow and arrow
- Go overlanding and camp in Kanaio
Before we leave to travel to Asia we plan on visiting the Big Island of Hawaii and hiking the Kalalau Trail on Kauai.

Koki Beach
Koki Beach is located on the east end of Maui. It has a stretch of land about 100 yards. Koki is a beach break, so mostly sand bottom and like any sand bottom it shifts a lot. Usually there is a peak toward the left end of the beach. There’s also one sort of in the middle and one on the right. It is often changing. It can be very fun!! It is a great spot for intermediate to advanced surfing. Many of the locals enjoy surfing there. The water is beautiful, and shallow on the way out. It can be dangerous as far as the rip current goes. Many people get sucked out, so while you're getting into the water be cautious.

Surf Spot In Maui – Launiupoko Beach Park
If your wondering where to surf in maui, you should check out Launiupoko Beach Park. Launiupoko Beach Park is made up of about 3 spots you can surf. There’s one in front of the little kids pool in front of the wall, one just to the right, and one further of the side way to the right. They’re all pretty playful. Most people hangout in front of the kids pool and to the right of that. It’s usually less crowded further toward the right toward Lahaida. It’s one of my favorite beaches for long boarding during the summer.
Some people will short board it when it’s a little bigger, lots of standup boarding, and some people body board it also. Many of the locals like to hangout here because of the shade, bathrooms, and utilities. There’s a little kid park also where the kids can hangout.
Surfing on Launiupoko Beach Park
The surf is real friendly for beginners, intermediate, as well as advanced people. But it’s mostly a playful place to take out your long board and do some nose riding. One of the best beginner surfing spots in maui. While surfing on Launiupoko, you’ll see beautiful sunsets. You’ll see lot’s of parties here, weddings, birthday parties, alohas. There’s a small parking lot, but it’s best to come in the morning to get a parking spot. There’s parking across the street also.
The water is very clear, always warm. When the tide is low it can get pretty shallow. Overall it is a beautiful place!
