Just over 250 years ago, the site of today's Theaterplatz was pure arable land. At that time the Wittumspalais , along today's Wielandstraße, was a city wall. In front of it was a green meadow. In the years 1757 to 1765 the softening of Weimar took place. The medieval city wall was demolished and it began the usual land speculation.
The Wittumspalais was built on the east side of the newly created square. West of it grew a large garden, which was abandoned in 1820. Originally the Chinese Pavilion erected for Anna Amalia , which was demolished after her death by her son Carl August 1818/19, in 1821 he left the building with the paintings of Adam Friedrich Oeser (1717-1799) in the castle park of Belvedere true to the original rebuild.
Here the pavilion received the today common name Red Tower. 1779/80 was approximately at the site of today's National Theater, the Comedy House (also Redoutenhaus called), which was raised in 1791 for the Court Theater, the predecessor of today's National Theater . The central focus of the square is the 1857 designed by Ernst Rietschel Late Classical Goethe-Schiller monument .
Today Theaterplatz opens up all directions of the city: via Schillerstraße to the southeast, Schützengasse to the south, Dingelstedtstraße to the west, Wielandstraße to the north to Goetheplatz, and finally the Zeughof leads into the old town.

The Liszt House Weimar is the former home of the composer and pianist Franz Liszt in Weimar , which is now a museum . It is located in Marienstraße south of the Weimar city center. The house was built in 1798/99 as a residence and office of the grand ducal court gardener. The plans for the house were designed by the court architect Johann Friedrich Rudolf Steiner . On the opposite side of the street was built in 1816/17 a similar building, which was designed by Steiner's son Carl Friedrich Christian Steiner and Clemens Wenzeslaus Coudray . Both buildings, which at the time were located on the southern edge of the urban area, form a kind of gateway to the city. In 1819, the house under the direction of the architect Coudray was fundamentally redesigned, so that it is one of the most characteristic examples of the Weimar Classic today.
On the ground floor lived until 1918, the Weimar Hofgärtner . From 1854 to 1868, the upper floor served the painters Friedrich Preller d. Ä. and Hermann Wislicenus as a studio. Liszt lived before he moved into the house, from 1848 to 1861 unofficially and de facto in the so-called Altenburg in Weimar, officially, however, in the Weimar Hotel Erbprinz . In 1869 Carl Alexander provided the upper floor of the Hofgärtnerei to Franz Liszt, in which the composer spent several months (alternating with Rome and Budapest) every year until his death in 1886. The living quarters on the upper floor for Liszt were furnished by the Grand Duke, Sophie von Oranien-Nassau,
After the death of Liszt on July 31, 1886 Carl Alexander decreed that the upper floor should be used as a museum. The Bechstein grand piano , which Liszt had already provided by the manufacturer during his lifetime, is a gift from Carl Bechstein to the newly founded museum. After the abdication of Wilhelm Ernst and the associated end of the Grand Duchy of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach in 1918, the Liszt House was owned by the state of Thuringia and as such administered by the Goethe National Museum . During the Second World War , the house was badly damaged and extensively restored at the beginning of the 50s. 1954 took over theNational research and memorial sites of classical German literature in Weimar (today Klassik Stiftung Weimar ) the building, which carried out extensive repair work in the following years.
Since July 2006, the historic living spaces have been supplemented by a permanent exhibition on the ground floor on Liszt's life and work, a cooperation project of the Klassik Stiftung Weimar with the Liszt School of Music Weimar and the Bauhaus University Weimar . In 2010/2011, a historic preservation of the historic interiors of the upper floor and the renovation of the roof and facade took place.

Goethe's garden house in the park on the Ilm to Weimar was a living and working place of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe . Since 1998 it belongs as part of the ensemble Classical Weimar for UNESCO - World Heritage Site. When Goethe came to Weimar in 1775, he showed great interest in the property for sale on the eastern Ilmhang . The house is possibly a winegrower's house from the 16th century - a time in which winegrowing in Weimar still played a major role. In his time, the slope was more of an orchard or vegetable acreage. A depiction by Georg Melchior Kraus from 1777 shows this condition.
The garden was in a desolate condition when Duke Carl August intended to give the property to his friend. In April 1776, Johann Wolfgang Goethe acquired the garden on the Horne, including the garden house in it, as well as all the earth, wall, ribbon, low and nail feasts. This is stated in the purchase agreement of April 22, 1776, which is confirmed four days later. The payment of the sum of 600 talers in two installments of 300 talers each is made by Friedrich Justin Bertuch from the casket of the Duke, who, however, considers it advisable to have Goethe appear to the buyer outside.
Goethe himself acted with great dedication to the renovation of the garden and made the house habitable again. In 1777, he installed a wooden altar on the south side of the house, which decayed during the Italian journey and was later removed. However, this is known from a drawing by Georg Melchior Kraus from 1777. The new gardening ideas, which were based on the English landscape gardens, which today we owe to the park on the Ilm, started here. Here, however, suggestions were of Wörlitz taken. Near the garden house is the stone of good luck . Overall, the garden was in contrast to today also a kitchen garden.
Since the small and modestly furnished house in the long run did not meet the requirements, the office and social conditions to Goethe, but also his library and his collections could no longer record, he moved in 1782 in the city, in the house on Frauenplan . But the garden house remained his favorite residence, which he used and visited again and again, for the last time on February 20, 1832.
In the garden house Goethe worked on central works. Here he created parts of the prose version of the Iphigenie auf Tauris , where he worked on the dramas Egmont and Torquato Tasso . Well-known poems such as An den Mond, Rastlose Liebe and Jäger's Abendlied were written here. Today the garden house is furnished as a museum.
