The first Opium War back in the 1840s was detrimental to China as war reparations saw loss of land and hefty sums given to Great Britain. Additionally, close combat with Britain also shook the country out of its naïve motion that the Qing dynasty was the strongest nation in the world. The battle in southern China's coastal Guangdong Province exemplified the reality of the Qing dynasty.
Weiyuan fort in Humen City of Guangdong Province, famous for its historic remains from the first Opium War, was once thought as the most reliable defense against intrusion. However it saw a magnificent defeat on February 26, 1841. Join CGTN’s Sun Ye for a closer look at the fort’s remains.

The Humen Pearl River Bridge (simplified Chinese: 虎门大桥; traditional Chinese: 虎門大橋; pinyin: Hǔmén Dàqiáo; Jyutping: Fu2mun4 Dai6kiu4) is a bridge over the Humen, Pearl River in Guangdong Province, southern China. It consists of two main spans - a suspension bridge section and a segmental concrete section. It connects the Nansha District of Guangzhou to Humen Town of Dongguan. Completed in 1997, the suspension bridge has a main span of 888 meters, and the segmental concrete section's main span of 237 meters is among the longest such spans in the world.[2] It forms part of the G9411 Dongguan–Foshan Expressway.[3] A newer bridge known as Humen Erqiao (Chinese:虎门二桥), built to reduce the traffic problems on the Humen Bridge, is under construction.
虎門大橋是一座位於中國廣東省珠江三角洲中部、橫跨珠江的懸索橋，距廣州約42公里。虎門大橋跨越珠江出海口的虎門水道和蒲州水道，東連東莞市虎門鎮，西通廣州市南沙區。虎門大橋是珠江三角洲高速公路網的重要組成部分，是連接京珠高速公路和廣深高速公路的重要交通樞紐，是溝通珠江出海口兩岸的粵東和粵西、深圳與珠海兩個經濟特區、香港與澳門兩個特別行政區的大型跨江懸索橋。由於珠江口經濟高速成長，不堪交通負荷，2013年起姊妹橋虎門二橋也投入建設，預計2018年通車。
Weiyuan Fort (Chinese:威远炮台) is a coastal-defense fort, now in ruins, in Humen, Dongguan, Guangdong, China. The fort was constructed in 1835 and was in use during the Opium Wars. The fort is situated immediately under the Humen Bridge. It is 360 meters in length. Admissions are free with valid documents
虎門要塞（こもんようさい）または虎門砲台（こもんほうだい、中国語: 虎门炮台）は、中国広東省東莞市（一部は広州市番禺区、南沙区にかかる）にかつて存在した清朝時代の戦力拠点、史跡。中国の近・現代史において重要な要所。広州の南の玄関口であり、後に中華人民共和国成立後発展する塘沽とよく比較され、「南に虎門あり、北に塘沽あり」と言わしめた。
1630年代明代末,鄭芝龍弟鄭芝虎が水兵と共に住んだ為、この名がある。康熙帝年間に建設がはじまり、道光帝年間、広東水師提督・関天培と欽差大臣・林則徐によって本格的な整備、拡充が行なわれた。沙角、大角、威遠などの砲台が11箇所に渡って置かれた。現在では、そのうち2箇所の砲台が残されている。阿片戦争末期は、壮烈な激戦が繰り広げられ多くの犠牲者を出した。
更に再び海外からの侵略にさらされたのは中華民国時代、1937年7月7日の盧溝橋事件に端を発した支那事変が拡大した折、日本軍は広東攻略を進め、日本軍の第21軍、第5師団によって攻略され、広東占領の足がかりにされた。
1982年2月23日に全国重点文物保護単位に、1997年6月に全国愛国主義教育示範基地に指定されている。
虎門炮台位於中國廣東省東莞市（部份位於廣州市番禺區、南沙區）境內的珠江入海口虎門，為鴉片戰爭時期的抗英遺址。
其始建於清朝康熙五十六年(1717年)，後來陸續增建，包括城垛、炮洞、兵房、火藥局等設施，均用磚、石、灰沙構築。鴉片戰爭前夕，林則徐、鄧廷楨、怡良、關天培等，為防備英軍侵略，將虎門11座炮台分為三重門戶設置：以沙角、大角炮台為第一門戶；南山、威遠、靖遠、橫檔、永安、鞏固炮台為第二門戶；大虎炮台為第三門戶；並以新涌、蕉門炮台為左右兩翼，共設鐵炮300多門。第一次鴉片戰爭期間，虎門炮台多次擊退英軍進攻，失陷後被英軍毀壞。
道光二十三年(1843年)，清政府重修虎門炮台。第二次鴉片戰爭期間，又被英、法軍隊搗毀。光緒年間再次重修。1982年2月23日被公佈為第二批全國重點文物保護單位，1997年6月被中宣部定為全國愛國主義教育示範基地。
