Our Mission Statement
As the oldest Methodist building in the world, the New Room has witnessed the development of Methodism from an 18th century religious movement into a 21st century Christian denomination of over 75 million members worldwide.
The ministry that John Wesley began at the New Room in 1739 continues to this day and this mission statement is reflective of our focus on being a welcoming space for all in the heart of Bristol city centre.
We believe our mission remains the same today as it was for John and Charles Wesley in the 18th century and we are thankful for the provision of the New Room to help us tell this story.
Our mission is to:
Promote the New Room and Charles Wesley's House as places of historical and contemporary significance in the spiritual and social life of Bristol, the nation and the world.
Tell the story of John and Charles Wesley so as to increase people's understanding of their respective contributions and their relevance to thought, belief and action today.
Develop the New Room as a sustainable heritage attraction, educational resource, cultural venue and community facility in the heart of the city.
Offer (people passing through the centre of Bristol) opportunities for reflection, challenge and spiritual encounter.
With thanks to film and video student Josh Thorpe.

The house is located in City Road, London and is open to the public Monday to Saturday from 10.00am to 4.00pm. Close to the City of London, Wesley's Chapel and home were built by John Wesley in 1778 to serve as his London base and replaced his original London chapel at The Foundry (the site of which is commemorated by a wall plaque just 50m away).

The Film is a documentary about the construction of the new addition to the oldest methodist chapel in Bristol - John Wesley's Chapel. The new addition is called The New Room. A 3 storey educational falcility that holds a new and impoved library and muesum, a educational room for schools to come an learn about methodism and a cafe and shop for people to come and enjoy some peace from the busy city.
The team that runs the chapel welcomed me and the others that helped on this project in with open arms, they are so nice to work with and be around. i couldnt thank them enough for the amount of kindness they showed to us.

OFFICIAL TRAILER: John Wesley: The man and his mission
* This is a promo for a feature documentary about John Wesley.
Journey throughout England and follow the story of one of the most influential people who ever lived.
From a childhood upbringing in the small town of Epworth in the north of England to a scholarly education at Oxford University, and from humble beginnings in Bristol to an influential base in London, John Wesley's influence is still felt, though not completely recognised, today.
John Wesley travelled England more than any other person in history. In the 1700s, he established schools, medical centres and chapels as he challenged social, political and religious structures to bring about equality for the marginalised.
Filmed in elegant chapels, bustling centres and historical sites in Epworth, Oxford, Bristol, Cornwall and in London in the United Kingdom, this historical and biographical documentary follows a well respected religious and Methodist commentator, Keith Garner, as he discovers the makings and influence of a man whose work in the 1700s would go on to impact the entire British Empire ... and ripple into today.
John Wesley's work and legacy is revered by millions around the world and this documentary features location interviews with representatives from Oxford University, the Methodist Church, Historical Societies, British Museums
and British politics.
