Camel City is a reference to the city's historic involvement in the tobacco industry related to locally based R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company's Camel cigarettes. Many locals refer to the city as Winston in informal speech. Another nickname, the Dash, comes from the dash in the city's name (although technically it is a hyphen); this nickname is used by the local minor league baseball team, the Winston-Salem Dash.
In 2012, the city was listed among the ten best places to retire in the United State by CBS MoneyWatch. Winston-Salem has seen a surge in growth and revitalization in the downtown area with hotels, restaurants, and apartments under construction. Winston-Salem tied with Charlotte for the highest growth in small business. WalletHub ranked Winston-Salem the third most affordable large city to start a small business.

Highway Drive - NC 147 North - Durham Freeway I-40 to I-85 Real Time
Real time drive of the Durham Freeway from the interchange with I-40 North through downtown and to the terminus at I-85.
From Wikipedia:
The Durham Freeway began with a 1962 bond referendum. The first section of the road, completed in 1970 around downtown Durham, extended from Chapel Hill Street to Alston Avenue and resulted in the destruction of a portion of the Hayti neighborhood as part of urban renewal, though a DOT engineer said the neighborhood likely would have been torn down anyway. The road was later extended west to Erwin Road and southward to where it meets I-40. In 1986, The freeway was designated as North Carolina Highway 147. The road's other names have included East-West Expressway and the I.L. Buck Dean Freeway.
In 1979, planners said many of the city's roads needed widening, and the decision was made to extend the freeway to I-85. The first section in 1982 disrupted the Crest Street neighborhood, but the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) moved 181 houses instead of tearing them down, an action that resulted in a 1987 third-place Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) award for historic preservation and cultural enhancement. Eventually, the problems that caused the original I-40 extension to I-85 to be delayed were overcome, and NC 147 was extended through the city. Work began in 1993, and the eastbound lanes opened May 21, 1997. The section connecting the road to I-85 opened July 31, 1998.

“Downtown, in my opinion, is vibrant,” says Clayton, a resident of downtown Asheville, NC. “It’s tiny—you can walk from one end to the other in about a half an hour. And you know the old real estate term “location, location, location”—I mean, that’s it!”
“I can walk out my front door and there’s over 100 restaurants downtown,” says Clayton. “Music venues, the art museum—they’re all available to us. There’s just so much happening here. I don’t think there’s another city like it. It’s amazing.”
“If you live downtown, you live in a condo,” says Clayton. “And we have them downtown. We have old historic and we have new. There’s not one like the other one. They’re all different. It’s a wonderful place to be.”
“We’ve learned a lot about what the condominium market in downtown Asheville is all about and what the typical buyer’s looking for,” says Peter Alberice of Alberice Architecture + Design, architect of the 12 South Lexington Avenue and 45 Asheland Avenue condo buildings. “That includes adequate storage, secure parking, balconies, and a rooftop amenity space that has an inside clubroom and outside viewing area to the mountains beyond.”
“The next growth area in downtown Asheville will be the South Slope,” says Alberice. “The city has targeted that as the next area that they see as being developed in downtown. It is very convenient to not only the Central Business District and the heart of downtown. It’s also very close to the River Arts District. It’s ideally located between a lot of different amenities that make up the desirability of being in downtown Asheville.”

Tory's Den and Falls at Hanging Rock State Park, North Carolina
In this video I take you out to a north-western part of Hanging Rock State Park, located near Danbury, in Stokes County, North Carolina. We are at the Tory's Den Access. The last time I was here was way back in 2012, so it was great to see this area of the park again. From the parking lot, we take a short hike down an easy trail to Tory's Falls and then continue on to Tory's Den. Tory's Falls is a very unique waterfall. Unfortunately this creek tends to run shallow in the summer months. At times of high water flow, it's really spectacular. Tory's Den is a small cave in a rock structure just downhill from the falls. The area gets its name because local Tories, colonists who wanted to remain loyal to Britain, use to camp in and around this area when their properties were confiscated by local Whigs, those in favor of independence. At the end of the video you can pause some slides showing some historical accounts of the area. Thanks for watching!
