West Fork Backpacking - Oak Creek Canyon, Sedona, Arizona
Recent trip to West Fork in Oak Creek Canyon, Sedona, AZ. We absolutely love this place. It's hard to believe a place like West Fork exists in the middle of the desert here in AZ, but I'm not complaining.

West Fork of Oak Creek, Fall Color Hike, Arizona
Hiking the West Fork of Oak Creek Trail #108, looking for #FallColor, north of Sedona, Arizona, in the Coconino National Forest. Got the idea from , who was up there on 10/12. I hiked it two days later. Good mid-morning (0900-1100) light really made the awesome fall colors pop: lime greens, gold, orange and red everywhere! Follow me on my blog & twitter:

Backpacking West Fork - Oak Creek Canyon, Sedona, Arizona 2019
Backpacking West Fork - Oak Creek Canyon, Sedona, Arizona
West Fork is one of the most amazing backpacking and hiking destinations in Arizona. We're lucky enough to live close to this trail and make it a point to get there at least once a year. It's crowded. Really crowded. But if you backpack and aren't afraid to get your feet wet, once you get past the maintained trail (about 3 miles in), the crowds die off and the real beauty of the canyon starts to really show. Backpacking West Fork is a great adventure. If this place isn't on your bucket list, it should be.

West Fork Trail in Oak Creek Canyon Sedona Arizona
There's a reason the trail along the West Fork of Oak Creek Canyon is the most popular in the 1.8-million-acre Coconino National Forest. Several reasons, actually: grand scenery, towering cliffs, Old West history and the constant burble of the creek as you hike. The trail begins a little more than 3 miles north of Slide Rock State Park, which is about 7 miles north of Sedona.

Ruins of Mayhew's Lodge West Fork Trail in Oak Creek Arizona
The West Fork is a very popular trail leads a short way to Oak Creek. The trail leads south for ¼ mile, passing the ruins of historic Mayhew Lodge, to the mouth of the West Fork of Oak Creek. Mayhew Lodge: As early as 1895, Lou Thomas turned Bear Howard's cabin into a two-story hunting fishing lodge. It was there that Zane Grey was inspired to write his book Call of the Canyon, which he turned into Sedona's first movie. In 1925, the property was sold to Carl Mayhew who operated it as Mayhew's Lodge. It became a favorite destination for prominent movie stars, politicians, and writers. Guests included Lord Halifax, President Herbert Hoover, Clark Gable, Susan Hayward, Cesar Romero, Jimmy Stewart, Walt Disney, and Maureen O'Hara. The U.S. Forest Service acquired the property and made plans to renovate the structure, but tragically the lodge burned to the ground in 1980.
A drive through Sedona, AZ and up Oak Creek Canyon
I filmed our drive from west Sedona through uptown and on up Oak Creek Canyon. I know the views are limited but it gives you an idea of how much glorious scenery there is in every direction. My mom has lived here for 30 years and is moving back to the east coast. Memories!
