West Lake Hanoi (Hồ Tây) - Best Place To Live In Hanoi
Tay Ho District is known for housing Hanoi’s largest freshwater lake, called West Lake. It’s a huge body of water – it has a circumference of 17km – and there are plenty of historic places of interest, five-star hotels, stylish restaurants, cafes, and nightlife venues that are worth exploring along the shoreline.
The West Lake is bordered by several significant pagodas. Vietnam’s oldest pagoda, Tran Quoc pagoda, was built in the 6th century and is located on an island in the middle of the West Lake. Further along the lake, Quan Thanh Temple, by the northern gate, was built during the reign of Le Thai To King (1010-1028).
Accessible within a 15-minute drive from Hanoi Old Quarter, many locals and tourists seeking respite from the busy city make their way to this high-end district as it provides a sanctuary of great natural beauty with plenty of quiet spots in the sizeable botanical gardens.
Most of Hanoians would like to live close to the West Lake because of its wonderful ambiance. While the Old Quarter and Hoan Kiem Lake are often chaotic, crazy and incredibly noisy, West Lake’s area is always of peace, holding people back from leaving.

17km Walk Around West Lake in Ha Noi & Trấn Quốc Pagoda | LIFE IN VIETNAM
I woke up one morning and said to myself Hey, I'm going to walk 17km around West Lake today. And I did it. This is a little visual tour of some of the sights I was able to take in from my exploration walk around the entire perimeter of West Lake (Hồ Tây in Vietnamese) the largest body of water in Ha Noi.
Along the way, a major highlight was the Trấn Quốc Pagoda, which was built in the 6th century AD. It's a major historic and cultural relic for Buddhists and Vietnam, and has been rightfully designated so
Across the Thanh Nien road in front of the pagoda is a smaller lake called Trúc Bạch Lake, which is famous for being the crash landing and capture site of John McCain in 1967. He was then held as a Prisoner Of War for 5 and a half years.
There were many other interesting things along the way around the lake's edge. You'll have to watch the whole video to see. ^^
If you're thinking about doing this walk yourself, it's very easy. You just need a pair of good walking shoes, and water to stay hydrated. There are plenty of mini-marts, street vendors, cafes, restaurants, bars, and other places along the way in case you become hungry or thirsty.

The Walk Around the World Travel Vlog
West Lake (Vietnamese: Hồ Tây) is the biggest freshwater lake of northwest center of Hanoi, Vietnam. With a shore length of 17 km (about 10.6 miles) and 500 hectare (about 5 km2) in area, this is the largest lake of the capital and a popular place for recreation with many surrounding gardens, hotels and villas. A small part of West Lake is divided by Thanh Nien road to form Trúc Bạch Lake. One district of Hanoi is named after the lake, Tây Hồ District.
As Hanoi's largest lake, located right in the center of Hanoi, West Lake is abundant with gardens, hotels, restaurants and other entertainment centers. For this reason, real estate prices near West Lake are staggering.
History
West Lake was created from a curved part of Red River and appeared in several Vietnamese legends. One legend suggests that West Lake was shaped after the battle between Lạc Long Quân and a nine-tailed fox spirit, and that's why the lake was once called Fox Corpse Swamp (Đầm Xác Cáo). Another folk story claimed that original name of the lake was Golden Buffalo Lake (Hồ Trâu Vàng, or Han Viet: Hồ Kim Ngưu) because it was formed from struggle of a buffalo after the disappearance of her calf. In the 11th century, the lake was named Foggy Lake (Han Viet: Hồ Dâm Đàm) due to its misty condition. Ultimately its name was changed to West Lake in 1573 to avoid the given name of king Lê Thế Tông, which was Duy Đàm.

West Lake Night Tour, Hanoi, Vietnam on a motorbike - Awesome! I love Asia Tour
This video is a very quick way to see many of the major tourist attractions around Hanoi at night on a motorbikes. I time-lapsed the motorbike ride to give you a very quick snapshot of the tour around Hanoi city.
We joined the I love Asia tour- Hanoi to go around the West Lake in Hanoi, Vietnam. You will see the heavy motorbikes traffics, markets and many other sightseeing spots in a very quick way.
Our tour began at the Mercure Hotel in Hanoi #Accorhotels.
The tour is I love Asia- Hanoi. It is an organisation to assist young asian women. In this night tour, the ladies take you around on their own motorbikes and discuss about the Vietnamese culture, food, sights and fun things to do. They are keen to improve their English. So the trip is a lot of fun and great to have a chat with the locals. We made several stops to eat local food. Here is the link if you are interested.
