Grand Rapids, Michigan Pub Crawl
Ace and I (plus Polly the Pug) are rving full time in our 2004 17’ Casita Freedom Deluxe. We officially hit the road on February 8, and have been going ever since.
We have been visiting family in Michigan for past couple of days & decided we wanted to do a Pub Crawl. What better place to do a pub crawl than in Grand Rapids Michigan? Otherwise known as “Beer City” Grand Rapids has over 40 breweries in the surrounding areas. Over half of those breweries have store fronts downtown.
Family, friends, and brewskis……
Ace and I had a great time wondering around downtown GR with the family. We were fortunate to be able to see some of the “Art Prize” installations as well.

Kalamazoo 1884: A film about Kalamazoo, Michigan by John Urschel
When Kalamazoo became a city in April 1884, it had a four-officer police station, an eight-person fire station, a mayor named Allen Potter and a strong business and manufacturing industry producing everything from pharmaceuticals to horse buggies.
To celebrate the city's 125th birthday, city employees made a film called Kalamazoo 1884 illustrating just what the city was like, from its educational system to its architecture to fashions worn by locals.
It's a 40-minute glimpse into the past, said John Urschel, executive producer of the film and the city's records and information manager.
The film, supported by the Irving S. Gilmore Foundation and the Kalamazoo Historic Preservation Commission, features music from the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra and photos provided by the Kalamazoo Valley Museum, the Kalamazoo Public Library's Local History Room and the Western Michigan University Archives and Regional History Collection.
The film begins with a countdown of mayors, from today's Bobby Hopewell to Potter, then takes the spectator on a tour of 1884 Kalamazoo, mapping out early roads and water systems.
It also highlights events happening at that time around the world, like the release of Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn and the introduction of the Louisville Slugger.
Urschel said business and landmarks that can still be found today, like the Lawrence and Chapin Foundry building, the Ladies Library Association, the gatehouse to the Kalamazoo Psychiatric Hospital and the 100 block of E. Michigan Avenue, are featured prominently along with architecture and businesses that no longer exist.
The project began in April and took several interns and employees to make, many of them spending hours at a time sifting through archives and fact-checking to be sure the film was entertaining and educational.
There was a lot of checking and rechecking. We wanted it to be as accurate as possible, said segment producer and former city intern Gretchen Sawatzki.
Local historians were involved in the whole process and even had their own screening of the film to check facts, Sawatzki said.
~Rex Hall Jr., Kalamazoo Gazette, 30 August 2009
The film's premiere public showing was at 6 p.m. on Monday, August 31, 2009, at the city commission chambers, 241 W. South Street, Kalamazoo, MI.
Digitized March 2016 by Kalamazoo Public Library. Presented here by kind permission of the filmmaker.

WMCAT moves to new west side HQ in Grand Rapids
A Grand Rapids non-profit has made a big move from downtown to the city’s west side. (Sept. 5, 2018)
Let's Visit Grand Rapids, MI
Grand Rapids, MI is the second largest city in the state of Michigan. Located in the western part of the Lower Peninsula, Grand Rapids has a lot to offer from its many parks (including Comstock Riverside Park featured at the end of the video) to many museums including the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum, great views of the city from the Grand River (the largest river in Michigan), and also one of Frank Lloyd Wright's houses he designed, the Meyer May House.
Although the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum was being remodeled when this video was recorded, I was able to check out the burial spot for both former President Ford and former First Lady Betty Ford.
Yankee Springs Recreation Area, Michigan - Campground Review
In this video, I review the Yankee Springs Recreation Area campsites in Middleville, MI. Located mid-way between Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids, it provides a convenient place for those in West Michigan to camp or as a stop for those heading up to Michigan's Upper Peninsula. For those who appreciate classic cars, it is only 30 minutes away from the highly rated Gilmore Car Museum. In this review I rate these campsites on five different criteria. Later in the video, I share my thoughts on the overall value of staying at this Michigan State Recreation Area campground.

Microbreweries are on the rise in the United States, especially in Michigan, which currently is ranked as the 5th largest state having Microbreweries. This documentary takes a closer look at Michigan Microbreweries, more specifically The Hideout Brewery in Grand Rapids. The Hideout's head brewer Wob Wonhatalo gives us an inside look at the bar, as well as teaching us that there are better reasons to drink beer from a microbrewery than you may think.
