Brighton West Pier - a short history.
This is a film drawn from the video and stills archive held by the West Pier Trust, as well as my own photographs and videos, which I produced for them in 2010. It shows something of the history and sad demise of this beautiful pier.

Brighton, England: Royal Pavilion and Pier
More info about travel to Brighton: Brighton is south England's Coney Island, and Brighton Pier is the place to go for a fix of junk food and dizzying rides. Just a couple blocks down is Brighton's Royal Pavilion, with its eccentric exterior that recalls the city's flamboyant heyday as a vacation spot for King George IV.
At you'll find money-saving travel tips, small-group tours, guidebooks, TV shows, radio programs, podcasts, and more on this destination.
Starling Murmuration over Brighton pier UK.
Every winter the very large Starling population of the UK is boosted by a influx of starlings from Russia & Scandinavia. Almost every evening at Dusk they gather in their thousands either around the pier or a little further along on the old west pier and perform their mesmerising dance.
The county of Somerset has really big Murmurations.
The West Pier in Brighton
Brighton's West Pier circa 2003
The pier was designed and engineered by Eugenics Birch and was opened in 1866.
Over the decades it developed into a fully-fledged seaside entertainment destination, offering a theatre, a concert hall, pavilion, bandstand and shops.
After the Second World War, the pier fell into decline, with tourists preferring Sombreros and Sangria to Double Diamond and Kiss Me Quick hats, the neglected pier fell into disrepair, and was declared unsafe and closed to the public in 1975. Locals launched a battle to revive the pier, and after the granting of a £14.2m Lottery award in 1998, there was real hope that this beautiful old pier would return to life.
The pier fell into the sea after a huge storm in December 2002, swiftly followed by two arson attacks in 2003.
It was opened on 25 November 1823 and was the first pleasure pier opened, in the UK.
West Pier - Brighton
Brighton Pier
The West Pier is a pier in Brighton, England. It was designed by Eugenius Birch, opening in 1866 and closing in 1975. The pier was the first to be Grade I listed in Britain but has become increasingly derelict since closure.
The pier was constructed during a boom in pleasure pier building in the 1860s, and was designed to attract tourists to Brighton. It was the town's second pier, joining the Royal Suspension Chain Pier of 1823. It was extended in 1893, and a concert hall was added in 1916. The pier reached its peak attendance during this time, with 2 million visitors between 1918 and 1919. Its popularity began to decline after World War II, and concerts were replaced by a funfair and tearoom. A local company took ownership in 1965, but could not meet the increased maintenance cost, and ultimately filed for bankruptcy. They could not find a suitable buyer, so the pier closed in 1975 and subsequently fell into disrepair.
The West Pier Trust now owns the pier and has proposed various plans to renovate it. Some schemes have been opposed by local residents and the owners of the nearby Palace Pier, who have claimed unfair competition. The pier gradually collapsed during the early 21st century. Major sections collapsed in late 2002, and two fires in March and May 2003 left little of the original structure. Subsequently, English Heritage declared it to be beyond repair. Structured demolition took place in 2010 to make way for the observation tower i360; further structural damage from storms has occurred since.

Brighton Official West Pier
Finding Beauty in Destruction
The Official West Pier, Brighton. Designed and Engineered by Eugenius Birch. Opened in 1866 and by 1916, the completed final building boasted a Grand Pavilion and Concert hall where many holidaymakers would be entertained.
In 2003 all this was destroyed in an arson attack and future plans for restoration were put to sleep.
Today the remains standfast on the Brighton shoreline, casting an eerie tone which is loved by Brightonians and visitors from all over the country. This iconic destruction is a main feature of the United Kingdom and is the most photographed structure in Brighton.
Its charm captivates all and in my captivity of its presence, I created this short film to celebrate its beauty even in its destruction.
Hope you enjoy

2003 was a catastrophic year for the West Pier. On 28th March the Pavilion was destroyed in an arson attack, and then on 11th May the Concert Hall, already seriously damaged in a huge storm the previous December, was also deliberately set on fire.

Latest TV News - West Pier pillars removed from Brighton beach ahead of i360 construction
Columns from Brighton's West Pier have been removed in the first stage of the construction of the i360.
The cast iron pillars have been in place four metres below the pebbly shore since the Victorian attraction was built in the 1860s.
It is the first part in the project to build the i360 viewing tower.
The pillars will be salvaged and form part of a memorial garden at a nearby seafront site.
