RED Episode #57: Run the Bluegrass and Local Food and Beverage in Lexington, Kentucky
Source:
Welcome to episode 57! We just got back from an amazing trip to Lexington, KY and we have so much to share with you!
RUN
This week the Run Eat Drink Podcast is in Lexington, KY to Run the Bluegrass! Run the Bluegrass includes a Yearling (3.65 mile), a 7-miler, and a half-marathon course, starting at the Keeneland Race Course, taking participants through picturesque countryside past storied horse farms responsible for many of the celebrated thoroughbreds. The course was stunningly beautiful and hilly and taught us a thing or two about terrain, preparation, and making adjustments on the fly. This race also has some amazing merchandise, a winner of an expo, and an after-party that's a blast.
EAT
This week we have almost all tastes covered. The food scene in and around Lexington is exploding and we found four spots you have to try if you are in the area. Smithtown Seafood is cooking up fresh seafood in a traditional southern fashion with their Kentucky Proud Catfish and Grits. But, they are also experimenting with flavors and textures not normally seen in southern cooking. Their Singapore Shrimp Wrap is putting an asian noodle dish, paired with formal breaded fried shrimp, and wrapping it in a tortilla! Crazy, right? Crazy GOOD!
Have a hankering for Southern BBQ? Look no further than Red State BBQ! This little spot on a country road by a motel and a horse farm is making local favorites like beer cheese with pretzels, brisket, and ribs with sides like macaroni and cheese and corn pudding. They have a variety of house-made sauces to let you experience regional differences in BBQ from Alabama white (Show Horse), to North Carolina vinegar, South Carolina Mustard, Texas hot, and more. Warm peach bread pudding is for dessert, so save room.
Looking for breakfast? We have you covered. Windy Corner Market is a little country store out on a rural road across from...you guessed it...horse farms. With lines almost out the door, these folks are feeding the masses traditional southern breakfast of eggs, sausage, and gravy, and some things that put a news spin on some old classics, like a breakfast po'boy with bacon, eggs, and fried oysters!
Finally, if you are in the mood for something from south of the border, who knew that Lexington, KY was home to some AMAZING Mexican food? Well, it is, and Papi's Mexican Restaurant and Bar is serving up some old recipes and some new modern classics, like the Cazuela de Rajas Poblanas, a Creamy Sauce of queso fresco, sautéed onion, and poblano peppers served with tortillas for dipping or to make messy tacos. Or how about some more non-traditional items like a hibiscus taco!
DRINK
Brewing and distilling are part of Kentucky heritage. We take you on a tour of some places that are keeping that heritage alive. West Sixth Brewing is serving up a variety of original beers that pair so nicely with the food from Smithtown Seafood which is adjacent to them. They are also working hard to improve their community through charitable giving and partnerships. Their Pay it Forward Cocoa Porter is a must-try!
Alltech Lexington Brewing Company is another brewer that is not only part of the city's rich history but a company that is maintaining that tradition. These folks make the ever-popular Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale, but we got to sample several others including a Blackberry Porter, The Kentucky Coffee Cream Ale, and the Kentucky Kolsch. They also own Town Branch distilling which is serving up about 14 different spirits.
finally, Country Boy Brewing is a popular local brewery whose wares can be found all over Lexington's dining establishments. Delicious beers with catchy names are their stock-in-trade like Cougar Bait, which is a light, crisp, American blonde ale. Or Shotgun Wedding, which is a brown ale aged on vanilla beans.

Lexington's Craft Beer Breweries | Kentucky Life | KET
Craft breweries are building a loyal following nationwide, even finding a niche in the land of bourbon. Kentucky Life visits two Lexington breweries to meet the folks behind West Sixth and Country Boy breweries.
Country Boy Brewing, whose logo features a pickup truck, is run by three men with country roots: Evan Coppage, Jeff Beagle, and Daniel Harrison. Located near the University of Kentucky campus off Broadway, the brewery offers a number of unique ales, including Jalapeno Smoked Porter, and coffee stouts as well.
West Sixth Brewery is located on Lexington's north side in an old bread factory. The brewery's owners hope the business will be a key fixture in the revitalized neighborhood. They offer locally made pretzels and beer cheese, and they are the only Kentucky brewery that cans beer.
Kentucky State BBQ Festival--A Kentucky Top Event
Wes goes to Danville KY, where he attends the Danville KY BBQ Festival. On day one we visit a Bourbon Barrel Auction for charity. Then on day two, Wes grubs on some of the best barbecue cooked by Pit Masters from all over and interviews some really passionate barbecue people. Driving Downtown - Chattanooga - USA
Driving Downtown - Chattanooga Tennessee USA - Season 1 Episode 8.
Starting Point: John Ross Bridge
Highlights include Market St - Broad St - Chestnut St - MLK Blvd - 7th St - 6th St - 5th St - 4th St - 3rd St - Aquarium Way - Walnut St - Cherry St - Riverfront Parkway.
Chattanooga is the fourth-largest city in the U.S. state of Tennessee, with a population of 167,674 as of the 2010 census, and an estimated population of 171,279 in 2012.[7] The city, which has a downtown elevation of approximately 680 feet (210 m), lies at the transition between the ridge-and-valley portion of the Appalachian Mountains and the Cumberland Plateau. The city is therefore surrounded by various mountains and ridges. The official nickname for Chattanooga is the Scenic City, being reinforced by the city's growing national reputation as a haven for numerous outdoor activities. Several unofficial nicknames include River City, Chatt, Nooga, Chattown, and Gig City, demonstrating Chattanooga's claims that it has the fastest internet service in the Western Hemisphere.[8][9]
Chattanooga is internationally known for the 1941 song, the world's first gold record, Chattanooga Choo Choo, by Glenn Miller and his orchestra.
Chattanooga is home to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) and Chattanooga State Community College.
Attractions
Chattanooga touts many attractions, including the Tennessee Aquarium, caverns, and new waterfront attractions along and across the Tennessee River. In the downtown area is the Chattanooga Choo Choo Hotel, housed in the renovated Terminal Station and exhibiting the largest HO model train layout in the United States. Also downtown are the Creative Discovery Museum, a hands-on children's museum dedicated to science, art, and music; an IMAX 3D Theatre, and the newly expanded Hunter Museum of American Art. The Tennessee Riverwalk, an approximately 13-mile (21 km) long trail running alongside the river, is another attraction for both tourists and residents alike.
Across the river from downtown is the North Shore district, roughly bounded by the Olgiati Bridge to the west and Veterans Bridge to the east. The newly renovated area draws locals and tourists to locally owned independent boutique stores and restaurants, plus attractions along the Chattanooga Riverpark system, including Coolidge Park and Renaissance Park.[118][119]
The Chattanooga Zoo at Warner Park is located a short distance from the downtown area.
Parks and natural scenic areas provide other attractions. The red-and-black painted See Rock City barns along highways in the Southeast are remnants of a now-classic Americana tourism campaign to attract visitors to the Rock City tourist attraction in nearby Lookout Mountain, Georgia. The mountain is also the site of Ruby Falls and Craven's House.[121] The Lookout Mountain Incline Railway is a steep funicular railway that rises from the St. Elmo Historic District to the top of the mountain, where passengers can visit the National Park Service's Point Park and the Battles for Chattanooga Museum.[122] Formerly known as Confederama, the museum includes a diorama that details the Battle of Chattanooga. From the military park, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Moccasin Bend and the Chattanooga skyline from the mountain's famous point or from vantage points along the well-marked trail system.[123]
Near Chattanooga, the Raccoon Mountain Reservoir, Raccoon Mountain Caverns, and Reflection Riding Arboretum and Botanical Garden boast a number of outdoor and family fun opportunities. Other arboretums include Bonny Oaks Arboretum, Cherokee Arboretum at Audubon Acres, and Cherokee Trail Arboretum. The Ocoee River, host to a number of events at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, features rafting, kayaking, camping, and hiking. Just outside Chattanooga is the Lake Winnepesaukah amusement park. The Cumberland Trail begins in Signal Mountain, just outside of Chattanooga.
Festivals and events
Chattanooga hosts the well-known Riverbend Festival, an annual nine-day music festival held in June in the downtown area. One of the most popular events is the Bessie Smith Strut, a one-night showcase of blues and jazz music named for the city's most noted blues singer. The annual Southern Brewer's Festival and the River Roast festival celebrate such traditional Southern staples as beer and barbecue.
New events, such as GoFest!, the Between the Bridges wakeboard competition, Heritage Festival, and Talespin, complement well-established events, such as Riverbend and the Southern Brewer's Festival, and attract their own audiences.[124][125] Back Row Films is a city-wide celebration of film co-sponsored by the Hunter Museum of American Art, the Arts & Education Council, and UTC.[126]

The Missouri River: Starting Point for the Western Trails, by Travis Boley, Association Manager for the Oregon-California Trails Association - Tuesday, October 27, 2015.

For many pioneers headed west, the Missouri River served as the
first leg in their journey to the Western Trails. Travis Boley,,
rethinks the Missouri River in terms of its unique status as a
waterway that doubles as a National Historic Trail.
He is already engaged in creating a 40 mile hiking/biking trail
in the shared historic corridor of the Oregon/California/Santa Fe
Trail from Sugar Creek, Missouri to Gardner, Kansas. It will
intersect with the Katy Trail Extension at 63rd and Blue Ridge
Blvd. in Raytown, Missouri making it possible for hikers and
bikers to easily access the Missouri River at the former Wayne
City Landing near present day Sugar Creek, Missouri.
His grander vision includes opening up wide swaths of the
Missouri River shoreline to allow similar non-motorized access to
our metro area’s riverfront, including trails that connect the
remaining historic sites from the Lewis & Clark Expedition and
the old riverboat landings for the wagon roads. This concept
would fully realize the idea that Congress established in the
1968 National Trails Act, which called for the building of
“retracement” trails in such corridors to forever preserve these
corridors.

Trailer park millionaires
Some of the richest people in the US, including billionaires Warren Buffett and Sam Zell, have made millions from trailer parks at the expense of the country's poorest people. Seeing their success, ordinary people from across the country are now trying to follow in their footsteps and become trailer park millionaires. The Guardian went to Orlando to learn the tricks of the trade from Frank Rolfe, the self-appointed dean of Mobile Home University, as he led would-be investors around a trailer park for sex offenders.

Trump's defense team arguments in Trump impeachment trial (Day 6)
Trump's legal team will begin laying out its case in depth, turning to several high-profile attorneys to argue against impeachment.
The lawyers revealed the broad outlines of their defense in a rare but truncated Saturday session, where they accused House Democrats of using the impeachment case to try to undo the results of the last presidential election and drive Trump from office.
The legal team is expected to pick up on that theme and also dive into areas that received negligible attention during the Democrats' presentation, including the now-concluded investigation into ties between Russia and Trump's 2016 campaign.
