Knoxville Center Mall (Closing 2020) Knoxville, TN
Here’s some information from Wikipedia
Knoxville Center, marketed as East Towne Mall; located in Knoxville, Tennessee, is a super-regional shopping mall serving the Knoxville metropolitan area. The mall opened in 1984,[1] and is located at Exit 8 on Interstate 640. The mall's primary target is the fastest growing area in the market.[2] In 1998, Sam’s Club opened its doors for the first time on the southeast corner in the mall’s outlot area. The mall was sold to Simon Property Group spin off Washington Prime Group(now under the name WP Glimcher) On May 29, 2008, Dillard's announced their plans to close due to declining sales. The store closed in September 2008. [3] in 2014. Retaining Simon Property Group as the manager of the mall. On February 18, 2016 it was announced that the mall had been placed up for sale once again.[4] The mall was sold in August 2016 to Knoxville Partners LLC.[5] As of August 2017, Knoxville Partners LLC has changed the name of the mall back to East Towne Mall. Signage at the mall remains unchanged, the mall is still marketed as Knoxville Center. JCPenney announced on March 17, 2017 that they would be closing as a plan to close 138 stores nationwide. The store closed on September 17, 2017. [6] The mall currently has 2 anchor stores open, Belk and Regal Cinemas. Sears announced on May 31, 2018 they would also be closing as part of a plan to close 72 stores nationwide. The store closed September 2, 2018.[7] As of October 2019, the mall has only 12 stores, a dentist's office, an event center and 2 restaurants. The largest of those stores, Belk, announced that they would be closing in mid-November, leaving the mall with no anchor department stores left. [8] On October 31, 2019, Knoxville Center Mall's owners announced that the entire mall would close and all tenants' leases would end on January 31, 2020. The Regal Cinema theatre location closed without any prior warning the same day as the mall's planned closure was announced.[9]

I drove through the worst parts of Knoxville, Tennessee. This is what I saw.
Wow! Knoxville's worst areas weren't what I thought they'd be at all. What an interesting experience!
So we’re going to begin our trip in downtown Knoxville on the northern edge of downtown in a small district called Old City. This is the sketchiest part of downtown Knoxville - home to the city’s main bus stop, train station and homeless shelter. There are a decent number of shops, restaurants and bars here, and this is where people go clubbing - typically starting at about 10 pm on Fridays and Saturdays.
It’s Sunday, November 10, 2019 at 11:15 am.
We’re going to leave the downtown area and head east into the worst area of Knoxville.
As you can see, many areas along the eastern side of downtown Knoxville look to be undergoing change. That’s because Knoxville has begun a gentrification process, slowly moving out the poorer members of the community further out, making room for condos, more retail and other newer and more modern buildings that will be appealing to younger, wealthier home buyers and residents.
This is the corner of McCalla Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard. As you can see across the street - the city has removed a large section of poor, crime ridden areas and built a more modern community. This particular community is called Five Points.
However, two blocks in front of us, if we kept going, on the other side of this new little development, is one of Knoxville’s worst projects. It’s a very interesting dynamic, where you have brand new homes on the same block as the projects.
This gentrification process is controversial. While many support improving communities, it forces poorer people out of their homes, separating them from friends and family. It is odd to see random modernized homes mixed in with older rundown homes. On some blocks, rent goes for $500 for most of the block, and then there are fixed up homes renting for $1,500 a month, or selling for $250,000 grand.
Knoxville has plans to continue modernizing its neighborhoods to lure in more affluence to the area. It seems to be working, as the Knoxville metropolitan area has grown faster than the national average, only trailing the Nashville area in terms of growth.
We’re now in the Parkridge neighborhood, which regularly gets the most attention when it comes to crime and poverty. But I’ve seen some ghetto areas, and this was tame in comparison.
Crime wise - it’s not pretty. Knoxville has been called one of the 50 least livable cities, because, while the downtown area might be charming and very safe, the outskirts are very poor and dangerous. Crime in Knoxville is 131% higher than other cities of its size. 1 in 4 people in Knoxville lives in poverty, almost double the national average.
We’re going to turn left and head west back towards downtown again and head down Magnolia Avenue, one of the most dangerous streets in the greater Knoxville area. Many times, when you hear about a crime, it’s along this section of East Magnolia Avenue.
To be honest, the worst areas of Knoxville were not really even all that bad. From my perspective, the worst outlying areas of Knoxville are just generally poor with heightened crime, but NOTHING like areas in major cities across the country.
We’re going to end the drive here. We also did a drivethrough of downtown Knoxville and the University of Tennessee, as well as a video on our drive to Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. The links to those videos are in the description.

Memphis, Tennessee, United States. Economy, Climate
Memphis is the second largest city in the state of Tennessee and the second largest metropolitan area in the state after Nashville. Memphis is an older city. Memphis is one of the most expansive cities in the United States. Memphis is a regional center for commerce, education, media, art, and entertainment.
LOCATION
The state rests in the southeastern portion of the United States. Memphis is on the southwestern corner of Tennessee, with the Mississippi River and the state of Arkansas bordering it to the west and the state of Mississippi to the south.
HISTORY
The city of Memphis was founded on May 22, 1819 (incorporated December 19, 1826) by John Overton, James Winchester and Andrew Jackson. They named it after the ancient capital of Egypt on the Nile River. Memphis developed as a trade and transportation center in the 19th century because of its flood-free location high above the Mississippi River.
Memphis played a prominent role in the American civil rights movement and was the site of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s assassination in 1968.
POPULATION
The city's demographics changed dramatically in the 1850s and 1860s under waves of immigration and domestic migration.
CLIMATE
Memphis has a humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons
Winter weather comes alternately from the upper Great Plains and the Gulf of Mexico, which can lead to drastic swings in temperature. Summer weather may come from Texas (very hot and humid) or the Gulf (hot and very humid). July has a daily average temperature of 82.7 °F (28.2 °C).
Early autumn is pleasantly drier and mild, but can be hot until late October. Late autumn is rainy and cooler.
Winters are mild to chilly, with a January daily average temperature of 41.2 °F (5.1 °C). Snow occurs sporadically in winter.
Memphis is extremely hot in the summertime, and the humidity can make you feel even hotter! Those who have trouble tolerating high heat and humidity may wish to avoid visiting during July or August.
ECONOMY
Since the civil rights era, Memphis has forged forward to become one of the nation's leading commercial centers in transportation and logistics. The city's largest employer is the multinational courier corporation FedEx, which maintains its global air hub at Memphis International Airport, making it the second-busiest cargo airport in the world.
The city's central geographic location has been strategic to its business development. Located on the Mississippi River and intersected by five major freight railroads and two Interstate Highways. Memphis is ideally located for commerce in the transportation and shipping industry.
its outlying areas were developed as cotton plantations, and the city became a major cotton market and brokerage center.

The 10 GAYEST CITIES in AMERICA
What percentage of the American population do you think is gay?
Now when experts ASKED Americans what percentage of Americans are gay, the results were perplexing. The latest poll indicates that we think many many many more of us are gay than actually are gay. Americans estimate that 30% of women are gay and 17% of men are gay.
That’s really high. The actual estimated gay population in America is 4.1%, which is up from 3.5% just 8 years ago.
10. Miami, Florida 4.2% gay
Now, let’s compare Miami to our least gay large metro in America, Birmingham Alabama, which has an estimated 2.6% of adults who identify as LGBT. That’s only a 1.6% difference, which might be a little surprising.
Of course, if you’re going to measure the city with the actual largest gay population, it would be New York City, which has an estimated 272,000 gay residents. But as a percentage of the city’s population, New York City ranks 17th overall.
9. Denver, Colorado 4.6 % gay
In 2016, 63% of youth were comfortable interacting with the gay population. A year later, that number was 53% and now, it’s less than half. The only age group that has a growing acceptance of the gay community are the elderly.
8. Los Angeles, California 4.6% gay
There’s entire websites devoted to the gay lifestyle in LA. Of course, west LA, Hollywood, Brentwood and the surrounding communities are very much gay friendly places. California is one of the main destinations for the gay community in the US.
However, according to polls, a city’s gay-friendly climate isn’t necessarily the main draw for gays. Only 12% of LGBT adults took into consideration how gay friendly a city is when deciding to move there.
7 Salt Lake City, Utah 4.7% gay
Salt Lake City, Utah has two gay city councilors, a lesbian mayor and a pride festival that hosts more than 40,000 participants every year. And Salt Lake also has an LGBTQ Chamber of Commerce, too.
6. Boston, Massachusetts 4.8% gay
If you look at a map, Massachusetts has a high gay population, like several other areas in the New England area. Maine, Vermont and New York all have high gay populations, too. Connecticut, however, remains very traditional. Interesting.
5. Seattle, Washington, 5% gay
Seattle Washington is unsurprisingly one of the gayest cities in the nation. Here, the gay population is 5% and also growing. Seattle passed San Francisco for the most households composed of gay or lesbian couples at 2.6% - and is the only U.S. city with more than 1% of households being lesbian couples.
4. New Orleans, Louisiana 5.1% gay
New Orleans is home to Halloween New Orleans, a three-day festival that’s a major draw for the LGBT community. This is home to the Gay Easter Parade and, of course, Mardi Gras, the over-the-top parade that’s a must-see no matter your sexual orientation.
3. Austin, Texas 5.4% gay
So many gay Americans are moving here that there’s a website called Gay in Austin which features things to do, meetups and advice on where to live.
Austin also boasts the Austin Gay & Lesbian International Film Festival as well as a gay and lesbian chamber of commerce
2. Portland, Oregon 5.5% gay
Portland elected its first gay mayor in 2008. An out bisexual Portlander is Oregon’s governor; an out Portland lesbian is the state’s Speaker of the House. Rainbow flags fly everywhere.
1. San Francisco, California 6.2% gay
It’s probably no surprise that San Francisco ranks as the gayest city in America. Here, 6.2% of residents are gay, and about 1.5% of the total population is in same-sex marriages. San Francisco is a non-discrimination haven. Equality and fairness rule the day here.

Tragedy: A Food Desert Driving Tour of West Knoxville
Alternate title: Food Desert in Paradise
According to the US Department of Agriculture, almost all citizens of Knoxville, TN are trapped in one food desert or another.
The Knoxville Metropolitan Planning Commission agrees and they note the same desert examined in this video too:
knoxfood.org/knox-county-20-food-deserts
I took a driving tour of one of them, it meets the original measure of a food desert: Low Income, and Low Access to food at 1 mile (urban area measure). The thing is, West Knoxville might be low income compared to the District of Columbia, Manhattan or San Francisco, but it is one of the pricer parts of town to live.
How they are measuring access is a bit of a puzzle too. Not even a Kroger store the immediate area will eliminate a food desert, save for one Kroger at Knox Plaza located in the midst of some very pricey real estate. Not so with Super Walmart, Super Target, a food co-op, or a variety of ethnic stores. Still other parts of town with expensive homes are designated food deserts, but when you get into the very wealthy areas they lose that designation.
Unless you have a Kroger in your front yard, or you are a professor at the local university (their favorite neighborhoods escaped desert status) you are in a food desert around here.
As you will see in the video, the following grocers all operate within the food desert. Combined they provide incredible variety that should please any rich white liberal. They provide both variety and value that any normal person would love also.
Trader Joe's #663
Target store #151
Lucky Asian Mart
Mi Pueblo Super Mercado
India Market
The term food desert is nothing more than empty alarmist leftist garbage. The only way to eliminate them for this tract is to violate local zoning laws, knock down some houses, and build grocery stores every half mile.
The Trader Joe's was featured in this Glenn Reynolds post:

The 10 WORST STATES for JOBS
Are ya out of work? If so, you’re in the minority. If you’ve been paying attention, only 3 and a half percent of the population is unemployed right now. That’s the lowest it’s been in the last 50 years.
And there’s plenty of jobs out there, too. Lots of companies can’t hire enough people, especially in blue collar industries like trucking and construction, in technology, and in high level health care.
If you don’t have a job now and you’re looking, it shouldn’t be long until you get one. If you’ve been out of work for a long time, you’re likely lazy. Except for very special circumstances.
So, the economy is booming and companies can’t grow fast enough to keep up with demand. But of course, there’s gonna be some states where the job scene is the worst. Not always terrible, but someone has to finish last right?
10. Oregon
In Oregon, the unemployment rate is currently 4.1% the 12th highest in the nation. But, we factored in more than just the current snapshot of the job situation to cast a wider picture.
We also measured job growth over the past year. There are 12 states with negative job growth right now, and three where job growth is zero. Oregon is one of those three.
So, a 4.1% unemployment rate and zero job growth rate means Oregon’s job quotient is 4.1.
9. West Virginia
No surprises that West Virginia is towards the bottom when it comes to jobs. The Mountain State’s 4.7% unemployment rate is the 5th worst in the country, but West Virginia’s job growth has been steady, growing at .4%, which is actually the 6th highest rate in the US. That gives West Virginia a job quotient score of 4.3.
Now lets compare that to our best state for jobs in the USA, Colorado, which has a 2.7% unemployment rate and a .8% job growth rate for a job quotient of 1.9. The state with the lowest unemployment rate is Vermont, where only 2.2% of the population is out of work.
New Jersey and Alabama are tied with Colorado with the best current job growth rates.
8. Kentucky
Here in Kentucky, the unemployment rate is 4.4% which is the 7th highest rate, and the job growth is -.1%.
-.1% means that there have been a loss of about 18,000 jobs over the last year here.
Like other states, Kentucky’s job gains came in health care, education and manufacturing, and the state saw job losses in mining and logging, as the US is slowly moving towards cleaner energy like natural gas.
7. North Carolina
North Carolina has a 4.1% unemployment rate, which is the 12th worst, but the Tar Heel state saw it’s job sector shrink by .4%, which is the 3rd highest rate of job losses in the nation.
6. Michigan
In Michigan, the numbers are very similar to those in North Carolina. A 4.2% unemployment rate and a -.3% job growth rate, resulting in a job quotient of 4.5.
Michigan has lost 6,000 jobs in manufacturing. Some people have said that a trade war with China is part of the problem. Other states like Pennsylvania and Wisconsin have seen similar dips in manufacturing jobs.
Of course, the auto industry is a big deal in Michigan. But slowing sales and rising inventories are leading to slight production cuts and job losses. Basically, people are buying less cars lately.
5. Washington
In Washington, the unemployment rate is 4.6%, the 6th highest in the nation. And the job rate has shrunk by -.2% in the last year.
The state of Washington saw a net loss of 1,600 jobs in the last reporting month. The largest job growth was in retail, technology and construction. Manufacturing jobs are down here, too, but unlike other states we’ve seen, Washington lost jobs in education and healthcare.
4. Arizona
Here in the state of Arizona, the unemployment rate is really low at 4.9%, but the job growth rate is climbing. Over the last year, Arizona did add a net 27,000 jobs, which is about average.
3. New Mexico
Here in New Mexico, the unemployment rate is tied with Arizona at 4.9%. However, unlike Arizona, which is making strides, New Mexico’s job growth rate was essentially zero.
So that means 1 in 20 people is out of work, and will likely remain out of work for the foreseeable future.
2. Alaska
Next up is Alaska, which has the nation’s highest unemployment rate at 6.2%. That’s almost twice the national average.
There are a few reasons for Alaska’s high jobless rate. Alaska has a lot of seasonal jobs that only happen in the summer. This includes tourism, commercial fishing, and firefighting.
However, on the bright side, the job growth rate here is .3%, so that’s promising.
1. Mississippi
Here in the Magnolia State, the unemployment rate is a little better than Alaska, at 5.5%. However, Mississippi has seen a -.5% job decline in the last year, the worst in the nation.
