We are riding the non-traditional route here. Most opt for the normal line that descends to Minturn. I prefer this descent, that ends in East Vail. Although it is much shorter, it offers steeper, less ridden and more natural terrain.

Bisbee (Arizona) - In Another Minute (336)
- - Bisbee is a former mining town in Cochise County in Southern Arizona - very close to the Mexican border. It's claimed to have the best year-round climate on Earth. Only 92 miles southeast of Tucson, Bisbee is a popular mountain getaway from the desert heat. Bisbee was established in 1880 as a copper, gold and silver mining town - and named after one of the Copper Queen Mine's investors: Judge DeWitt Bisbee. Today, Bisbee has a population of about 5,500 and is known for its early 20th architecture and its alternative and creative spirit. I very much appreciate the slogan on the Discover Bisbee website: Come be yourself, be inspired, be refreshed... Come be Bisbee for awhile.
When talking about this town, I should also mention the Bisbee 1000 - The Great Stair Climb. It's the only outdoor stair climb event in the USA. The 4.5-mile course features nine staircases (over 1000 total steps) connected by winding roads. We drove some of those skinny winding roads - but I decided to leave out that footage because it was soooo slow. The 26th Annual Great Stair Climb takes place on October 15, 2016.
This video was shot almost exactly one year ago, when Jess Grotfeldt went on a spontaneous road trip from Tucson to the Arizona wine country and beyond. We felt drawn to Bisbee because of its unique hotels that keep the Wild West spirit alive and especially the funky Bisbee Grand Hotel, which has a grand collection of theme rooms and suites. However, when we first got to town and we only had minutes to decide, we booked a room in a different hotel (not in the video).
Later that evening, we went to the Bisbee Grand Saloon for a drink... and the awesome bartender (wish I could remember her name), let us check out the hotel and our coveted Oriental Suite. As soon as I saw the Chinese bed, my mind was made up: I HAD to sleep in that bed!!! So, um, yeah, we booked that suite, got our belongings from the other hotel and paid for two different rooms in two different hotels for one night. Crazy? Sure. Worth it? Totally!
The next day, I got to see and photograph most of the rooms and suites that weren't occupied. I would love to return and stay in the Cowboy Suite... sleeping in a covered-wagon-bed? Yeah!!! We also eventually met the two very personable owners, Bill and Valerie Thomas, who set up the hotel in the early 1990s. I think what I like about the hotel so much is that it's not your fancy Disney-esque theme hotel, but something put together and managed by regular, creative, passionate folks. That's what gives it so much character. My enthusiasm may explain why this short video features almost more images from the hotel than the town itself.
The song in this video is “Mountain Sun” by Jason Shaw of He made this song available via the CC BY 3.0 license, which is awesome! Thank you, Jason!
In the next few days, I'll upload more photos of Bisbee to the In Another Minute 2016 Flickr album and on my blog.

Through Clouds to Alma.
2010RoadTripUSA. Part 15. Through Coluds to Alma. August 25, 2010.
Music by R. Tilsley.
The historic Town of Alma is a Statutory Town located in Park County, Colorado, United States. The town population was 179 at the U.S. Census 2000.
At an elevation of approximately 10,578 feet (3,224 m), it is the second highest incorporated municipality in the United States. Alma, which took the title from Leadville, Colorado, held on to the number one spot until 2006 when Winter Park, Colorado, became the highest incorporated town due to its annexation of a ski area. Alma still has the highest developed municipality in the United States as Winter Park's claim to be the highest is due to their annexation of the ski area above the town and at the elevations above Alma's elevation the only development is ski lifts.
The town was named by a merchant named Mr. James, after his wife. (wikipedia)
US 285 runs for a few miles through the Denver metro area as Hampden Avenue then begins to climb into the Rocky Mountains, mostly following the route of the original narrow gauge transcontinental railroad, skirting the south side of the Mount Evans massif. Once west of Mount Evans, the highway winds its way over Kenosha Pass, elevation 10,001 feet (3,048 m), into the high-altitude South Park basin of Colorado.
Partway across the South Park, it serves the town of Como, which still houses one of the few remaining narrow gauge roundhouses. The old transcontinental railroad breaks away from US 285 at this point, going northwest over Boreas Pass en route to Breckenridge, the historically rich gold fields of Leadville, and eventually California. US 285, meanwhile, continues across the valley to the southwest, leaving the South Park basin as it climbs over Trout Creek Pass, elevation 9,346 feet (2,849 m), and then drops into the Upper Arkansas River Valley, with a view of Mount Princeton.
Once the highway hits the Arkansas River Valley floor, it takes a sharp turn south, just missing the small town of Buena Vista to the north. As US 285 turns south, it brushes Salida, climbs over Poncha Pass, elevation 9,012 feet (2,747 m), then enters the northern end of the San Luis Valley. (wikipedia)
Collosal Cave; Tucson; Brian Mello; 2015; horseback riding at the ranch
super cool experience at the Ranch next to Colossal Cave in Vail, Arizona. after touring the cave, we went to the ranch, where we only wanted to pet the ponys and horses, yet after talking to the extremely friendly ranch owner, we were invited to ride the horses down a 10 minute trail for only 5 dollars per person. I would do it over and over again. So cool!!
This is the first time I've ridden a horse since I was 10 years old in Panama City, Panama.
the ranch also has a beautiful garden and a museum which explains how the cave site was enlarged and made to accommodate tourist back in the 20's during the depression. The project was part of (Roosevelt's?) plan to provide work to thousands by creating the Civilian Conservation Corps, which created natural park's camps around the United States. I'm a big fan of history and the museum is worth a visit, many times over.
