Greenwich Village, often referred to by locals as simply the Village, is a neighborhood on the west side of Lower Manhattan, New York City. Greenwich Village has been known as an artists' haven, the Bohemian capital, the cradle of the modern LGBT movement, and the East Coast birthplace of both the Beat and '60s counterculture movements. Groenwijck, one of the Dutch names for the village (meaning Green District), was Anglicized to Greenwich.[5][note 2] Two of New York's best colleges, New York University (NYU), and the New School are located in Greenwich Village.[7][8]
Greenwich Village has undergone extensive gentrification and commercialization;[9] the four zip codes that constitute the Village – 10011, 10012, 10013, and 10014 – were all ranked among the ten most expensive in the United States by median housing price in 2014, according to Forbes,[10] with residential property sale prices in the West Village neighborhood typically exceeding US$2,000 per square foot ($22,000/m2) in 2016.

Starting in the late 1800s, Greenwich Village became the epicenter of art and music in New York. Artists and musicians from all over flocked to the Village where they found camaraderie, inspiration and affordable housing. The paths of many famous musicians' writers and actors passed through the eclectic streets of Greenwich Village including Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Edgar Allen Poe, and Mark Twain.
Washington Square Park:
A great place to start our tour of Greenwich Village is Washington Square Park. It is home of the famous Washington Square Arch, which was built in the late 1800s to celebrate the centennial of George Washington's inauguration as president of the United States.
The interesting thing about Greenwich Village is that the starving artists were the ones who brought charm and appeal to the area. Ultimately the very appeal they created started attracting wealthier New Yorkers, which drove the prices up and, eventually, caused most starving artists to relocate elsewhere in the city.

If the names Joey, Monica, Chandler, Ross, Rachel and Phoebe mean anything to you, make sure you visit the corner of Bedford St. & Grove St. in Greenwich Village to pay homage to the Friends' Building. This is the building where the Friends supposedly lived in the hit sitcom we all know and love. In fact, before the producers decided on the title Friends, the working title of the show was Once Upon a Time in the Village.

Coming in at nine and a half feet wide, you'll find the narrowest house in NYC at 75 ½ Bedford St. The Pulitzer Prize winning poet Edna St. Vincent Millay lived there for a short while.

14th Street is a major crosstown street in the New York City borough of Manhattan. Presently primarily a shopping street, in the earlier history of New York City 14th Street was an upscale location, but it lost its glamor and status as the city grew northward.
At Broadway, 14th Street forms the southern border of Union Square. It is also considered the northern boundary of Greenwich Village, Alphabet City, and the East Village, and the southern boundary of Chelsea, Flatiron/Lower Midtown, and Gramercy.
14th Street marks the southern terminus of Manhattan's grid system. North of 14th Street, the streets make up a near-perfect grid that runs in numerical order. South of 14th, the grid continues in the East Village almost perfectly, but not so in Greenwich Village, where an older and less uniform grid plan applies.

Two of New York's best neighborhoods for walking are Soho and Greenwich Village, and we're going to take you on a stroll through the area, starting out with several minutes wandering through Soho, which is the neighborhood south of Houston Street, and it had been a rundown industrial neighborhood with factories, warehouses and truck-loading ramps, but in the last 40 years, it became New York's supreme cutting-edge, artistic neighborhood.
We'll go through Washington Square Park, down McDougall, over to Bleecker Street and into the West Village especially walking along Bleecker Street. You can walk almost anywhere, any which way you want in the Village and have a great time, but we're going to show you a suggested route that hits a lot of the highlights.
We’re going to take a walk in Chelsea, one of the nicest neighborhoods of Manhattan. It's primarily residential place for local people rather than for tourists, which makes it all that much more attractive for the inquisitive visitor to go explore -- you'll find a mix of quiet side streets and busy retail avenues. Chelsea's located between 14th St. and 34th St., between the Hudson River and about 6th Avenue, just about 1 mile south of Times Square, which puts it pretty close to Midtown and yet it is a world apart.
The High Line has become one of the most popular attractions in New York City -- it's amazing. Originally it was planned as a neighborhood park because Chelsea doesn't have much in the way of parks, and now it attracts visitors from all over the world. And New Yorkers love it as well. We will take you on a walk from start at the Whitney to finish at Hudson Yards.
We’re taking you to Manhattan's Chinatown, which is the most famous and while it’s not the biggest, it’s home to the highest concentrated, industry population density of Chinese people in the Western Hemisphere. Tourism, manufacturing, and retail are the major industries along with 300 Chinese restaurants, some Asian antique shops, and countless souvenir stores sprawling over many blocks.
We're going to take you on a walking tour through New York's Lower East side and the East Village, a part of the city that most visitors don't get to, and yet you'll find it's one of the most interesting places, heading for Astor Place down Lafayette Street, below Houston down to Hester, touching on Chinatown, then up to the East Village.
Heading south into what's called NoHo. We will be meandering along Lafayette and the Bowery and some of the side streets in between as we make our way down to Houston.
There's not much left of Little Italy anymore, only two blocks along Mulberry Street, most famous for Ferrara that great bakery with their cannolis. This neighborhood used to be filled with thousands of Italian immigrants a hundred years ago.
We'll take a walk along Hester Street for a few blocks then north on Ludlow and along Orchard Street. These blocks have an authentic urban charm with a lot of character. You don't see many chain stores here, they're individual, idiosyncratic, they've got grocery delivery on electric mopeds, for example. There's a real feeling of neighborhood here. An artistic edge with a Bohemian atmosphere. Back in the mid-twentieth century it was a popular and cheap place for beatnik poets and radical artists, along with ordinary poor people.
We've traveled north of Houston Street, arriving in the East Village, walking north a few blocks along First Avenue and then meandering down 7th Street and St. Mark's Place, ending up at Tompkins Square Park. We're also near the edge of Alphabet City which has a lot of middle-class housing developments.
There is another big fascinating chunk of Manhattan that a lot of visitors don't see between 34th Street and 14th Street, in many ways the authentic, commercial heart of the city. Just a mile from bottom to top, but we’ll take a winding route three times longer.
We’ll start at Union Square and walk you north to 34th Street, giving you a taste of the real life of New York City - coffee shops to relax, some famous landmarks, busy shopping streets, Koreatown, Asian imports.
We’re going to take a walk through the Financial District, at the southern tip of Manhattan visiting the new World Trade Center and going up the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere, and into the Memorial Museum.

The Chelsea Market complex occupies an entire city block with a connecting bridge over Tenth Avenue to the adjacent 85 Tenth Avenue building. The High Line passes through the 10th Avenue side of the building.
Chelsea Market was constructed in the 1890s and was originally the site of the National Biscuit Company (Nabisco) factory complex where the Oreo cookie was invented and produced. The complex was redeveloped in the 1990s and features a retail concourse at ground level with office space above. Chelsea Market is currently owned by Alphabet Inc., parent company of Google. Chelsea Market lies within the Gansevoort Market Historic District, which is recognized by New York State and National Register of Historic Places.

Rensselaer is a city in Rensselaer County, New York, located along the Hudson River directly opposite Albany, New York. As of the 2010 U.S. census, the population was about 9,400 people. In the year 1920, it was about 10,840. The name is from Kiliaen van Rensselaer, the original landowner of the region in New Netherland. Rensselaer is on the west border of the county. Earliest settlement occurred as early as 1628. This town has a rich industrial history stretching back to the 19th century, when it became a major railroad junction. It is still important in railroading as the location of the 14th busiest AMTRAK station in the country. It was one of the earliest locations of the dye industry in the United States, and the first American location for the production of aspirin.
Troy is a city in the US State of New York and the seat of Rensselaer County. Troy is located on the western edge of Rensselaer County and on the eastern bank of the Hudson River. Troy has close ties to the nearby cities of Albany and Schenectady, forming a region popularly called the Capital District. The city is one of the three major centers for the Albany-Schenectady-Troy Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), which has a population of 850,957. At the 2010 census, the population of Troy was 50,129. Troy's motto is Ilium fuit, Troja est, which means Ilium was, Troy is.
Before European arrival, the area was settled by the Mahican Indian tribe. There were at least two settlements within today's city limits, Panhooseck and Paanpack. The Dutch began settling in the mid 17th century; the patroon Kiliaen van Rensselaer called the area Pafraets Dael, after his mother. Control of New York passed to the English in 1664 and in 1707 Derick Van der Heyden purchased a farm near today's downtown area. In 1771 Abraham Lansing had his farm in today's Lansingburgh laid out into lots. Responding to Lansing's success to the north, in 1787, Van der Heyden's grandson Jacob had his extensive holdings surveyed and laid out into lots as well, calling the new village Vanderheyden.
In 1789, Troy got its current name after a vote of the people. In 1791, Troy was incorporated as a town and extended east across the county to the Vermont line and included Petersburgh. In 1796 Troy became a village and in 1816 it became a city. Lansingburgh, to the north, was still a separate village, the first to have ever been incorporated in the State. Lansingburgh became part of Troy in 1900, though it maintained a very separate identity and still does to this day.
Troy is known as the Collar City due to its history in shirt, collar, and other textile production. At one point Troy was also the second largest producer of iron in the country, surpassed only by the city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Rensselaer School, which later became Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, was founded in 1824 with funding from Stephen Van Rensselaer, a descendant of the founding patroon, Kiliaen. In 1821, Emma Willard founded the Troy Female Seminary on 2nd Street, which moved to its current location on Pawling Avenue in 1910. It was renamed Emma Willard School in 1895. The former Female Seminary was later reopened (1916) as Russell Sage College, thanks to funding from Olivia Slocum Sage, the widow of financier and Congressman Russell Sage. All of these institutions still exist today.
The city operates under a mayor-council government; Lou Rosamilia is the current mayor and Lynn Kopka is the council president.

The walking video 4K City Walks: Fort Collins, Colorado Walking Tour - Virtual Walk Treadmill Scenery City guide explores the downtown area of Fort Collins, CO. The town surprised me a bit. I’d stayed at a hotel out by the highway but didn’t remember coming into the town center. The old buildings and small town feel really charmed me. I walked around the pedestrian area, past bars, coffee shops, and restaurants, and made my way out to the New Belgium Brewery, famous for its pioneering of micro brews. I crossed the Cache de la Poudre River on a fine fall afternoon before heading back through downtown and into a residential area with lovely old homes. Fort Collins is a municipality in northern Colorado, which serves as the seat of Larimer County. Situated on the Cache La Poudre River along the Colorado Front Range, Fort Collins is located 56 mi (90 km) north of the Colorado State Capitol in Denver. With a 2018 estimated population of 167,830, it is the fourth most populous city in Colorado after Denver, Colorado Springs, and Aurora. Fort Collins is a midsize college city, home to Colorado State University and Front Range Community College's Larimer campus.
Fort Collins was founded as a military outpost of the United States Army in 1864. It succeeded a previous encampment, known as Camp Collins, on the Cache La Poudre River, near what is known today as Laporte. Camp Collins was erected during the Indian wars of the mid-1860s to protect the Overland mail route that had been recently relocated through the region. Travelers crossing the county on the Overland Trail would camp there, but a flood destroyed the camp in June 1864. Afterward, the commander of the fort wrote to the commandant of Fort Laramie in southeast Wyoming, Colonel William O. Collins, suggesting that a site several miles farther down the river would make a good location for the fort. The post was manned originally by two companies of the 11th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry and never had walls.
Settlers began arriving in the vicinity of the fort nearly immediately. The fort was decommissioned in 1867. The original fort site is now adjacent to the present historic Old Town portion of the city. The first school and church opened in 1866, and the town was platted in 1867. The civilian population of Fort Collins, led by local businessman Joseph Mason, led an effort to relocate the county seat to Fort Collins from LaPorte, and they were successful in 1868.
The city's first population boom came in 1872, with the establishment of an agricultural colony. Hundreds of settlers arrived, developing lots just south of the original Old Town. Tension between new settlers and earlier inhabitants led to political divisions in the new town, which was incorporated in 1873. Although the Colorado Agricultural College was founded in 1870, the first classes were held in 1879.

Little Italy (Italian: Piccola Italia) is a neighborhood in Lower Manhattan, New York City, once known for its large population of Italian Americans. Today the neighborhood consists of only a few Italian stores and restaurants. It is bounded on the west by Tribeca and Soho, on the south by Chinatown, on the east by the Bowery and Lower East Side, and on the north by Nolita.
Little Italy on Mulberry Street used to extend as far south as Worth Street, as far north as Houston Street, as far west as Lafayette Street, and as far east as Bowery. It is now only three blocks on Mulberry Street. Little Italy originated as Mulberry Bend. Jacob Riis described Mulberry Bend as the foul core of New York's slums. During this time period Immigrants of the late 19th century usually settled in ethnic neighborhoods. Therefore, the mass immigration from Italy during the 1880's led to the large settlement of Italian immigrants in lower Manhattan. The results of such migration had created an influx of Italian immigrants which had led to the commercial gathering of their dwelling and business.
Bill Tonelli from New York magazine said, Once, Little Italy was like an insular Neapolitan village re-created on these shores, with its own language, customs, and financial and cultural institutions. Little Italy was not the largest Italian neighborhood in New York City, as East Harlem (or Italian Harlem) had a larger Italian population. Tonelli said that Little Italy was perhaps the city's poorest Italian neighborhood. In 1910 Little Italy had almost 10,000 Italians; that was the peak of the community's Italian population. At the turn of the 20th century over 90% of the residents of the Fourteenth Ward were of Italian birth or origins. Tonnelli said that it meant that residents began moving out to more spacious digs almost as soon as they arrived. Such a vastly growing community impacted the U.S. labor movement in the 20th century by making up much of the labor population in the garment industry.
After World War II, many residents of the Lower East Side began moving to Brooklyn, Staten Island, eastern Long Island, and New Jersey. Chinese immigrants became an increased presence after the U.S. Immigration Act of 1965 removed immigration restrictions, and the Manhattan Chinatown to Little Italy's south expanded. In 2004, Tonelli said, You can go back 30 years and find newspaper clips chronicling the expansion of Chinatown and mourning the loss of Little Italy.

The borders of Hamilton Heights are 135th Street to the south, 155th Street to the north, the Hudson River to the west and Edgecombe Avenue to the east.
History:
Hamilton Heights is a neighborhood within the area of Harlem and it takes its name after Alexander Hamilton, the first U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, who lived there in the last few years of his life.
Hamilton Grange National Memorial
Alexander Hamilton came to New York at the age of 17 to study at King's College, which is now Columbia University. He later became a politician and built his federal style house at this location in 1802, which is called Hamilton Grange National Memorial. One of the most interesting moments of Hamilton's life was actually his death. He died on July 12, 1804 as a result of being mortally wounded from a pistol duel the day before with Aaron Burr, who was, at the time, the Vice President of the United States! In those days dueling politicians was not just a figure of speech!
Dance Theatre of Harlem
The Dance Theatre of Harlem is a ballet company and school which was created to introduce ballet and dance to the children of Harlem. Today it has grown into a multi-cultural company which offers training in ballet, choreography and music to people of all ages.
The Harlem School of the Arts
The Harlem School of the Arts was founded in 1964 to create an opportunity for the children of Harlem to be exposed to and to learn musical instruments. It started with piano lessons and later violin, drama, visual arts and dance classes were added.
Sugar Hill
Sugar Hill is a neighborhood within Hamilton Heights. In the 1920s this area was inhabited by wealthy African-American people who had such a sweet lifestyle that it was given the name Sugar Hill. It has since been declared an historic district due to the amazing rowhouses that have been preserved in the district
City College of New York
City College of New York was the first public college in the United States. It was founded in order to give the opportunity to immigrant youth to attend college. City College occupies a large part of the Hamilton heights section of Harlem, from 130th to 141st Streets, and has many historical buildings and monuments on its campus.
Riverbank State Park
Riverbank State Park occupies 28 acres of land in Hamilton Heights along the Hudson River. Inspired by the urban rooftop designs in Japan, this park was built on several levels, which makes it very unusual and different from the other parks in New York City. This park offers many outdoor sports activities.
