One Month at a Time: Taking on the West Virginia Symphony
In the September 2016 segment of his year-long One Month at a Time series, Charleston Gazette-Mail writer Bill Lynch takes on a new assignment: performing with the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra. There's only one problem: Bill has not played an instrument since he was 15 years old. He's a lot older than that now. See the companion story to this video in the Sunday, Sept. 4, 2016 Charleston Gazette-Mail Life & Style section:

The Place Just Right: A Holiday Performance: West Virginia University -- 2013
Mountaineers are united by many special qualities: Our values. Our character. A belief in simplicity, humility, and hard work.
You will find those traits in the lyrics of one of our signature songs, Simple Gifts. Many are familiar with this melody thanks to the Pride of West Virginia Marching Band, our University Choir, and other extraordinary WVU performing ensembles.
This simple Shaker hymn represents more than a song to us. It exemplifies the qualities that define us—not just at holiday time—but each and every day.
Please enjoy this year's holiday message featuring our University Singers, directed by Jeffery Redding, singing this moving rendition of Simple Gifts at iconic locations around campus. Truly, the lyrics which include the place just right... resound this holiday season.
Happy Holidays from the WVU Family!

Flash Mob Response to Westboro Baptist Church in West Virginia
When the hatemongers from Westboro Baptist Church announced they were coming to Charleston, W.Va., to do their usual 'God Hates Figs' bit (I decline to give them what they want - which is to use the media to propagate their own version of that line), Covenant House gathered a host of area folk for a flashy response. This is a video of a flash mob rehearsal in the Covenant House parking lot, set to a techno version of 'Country Roads.' Note the final long, continuous take, ending in the pigeons checking out what was going on down there on the lot. Bewt counter-protest sign at the following day's protest: 'God hates signs.' This video originally accompanied a story on April 7, 2010 in the Charleston Gazette:

(media) West Virginia Symphony Orchestra Takes You Behind the Music
It's one thing to go to the Clay Center and listen to the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra, but it's another when the maestro himself takes the time to explain the music and what to listen for. That's what Grant Cooper, the Artist Director and Conductor for the WVSO, did prior to the March 4 Classic Expressions concert. In this video Cooper is joined by guest artist Robert Turizziani, a talented clarinetist.
