The Balkan war broke out in 1992 and Yugoslavia disintegrated. For European railways this created a huge ‘no go’ area and diversion of traffic away from the war zone. By 2004 Hungary was in the EU – the transport map of Europe was being redrawn. The effect on Austria was an increase in the importance of the Westbahn at the expense of the Tauernbahn- the railway from Salzburg to Slovenia- as freight traffic for Greece, Turkey, Bulgaria and Romania was re-routed through Budapest. OBB freight division needed capacity for ever-increasing transit freight while the passenger business craved speed over its principal mainline. The painfully slow modernisation of the OBB had unexpectedly become a European priority – money was found – a new westbahn railway was built. This doubled the corridor capacity and gave the possibility of sustained high-speed running for passenger trains. Twenty years after the war started trains are running over the new railway. This is an exceptional line because it is both high-speed and multi-functional: 200kph, soon perhaps 250kph, RailJets, 160- 200kph ECs, Regional trains and 100kph freight all run over the new infrastructure. We follow the line from St Pölten to the New Central through-station, view the important connections between the old and new network, see how the new station is bedding in and what has happened to the old icon of Vienna the Westbahnhof. The Austrian Federal Railways (German: Österreichische Bundesbahnen or ÖBB, formerly the Bundesbahn Österreich or BBÖ) is the national railway system of Austria, and the administrator of Liechtenstein's railways. The ÖBB group is owned entirely by the Republic of Austria and is divided into several separate businesses that manage the infrastructure and operate passenger and freight services.
The Austrian Federal Railways has had two discrete periods of existence. It was first formed in 1923, using the Bundesbahn Österreich name, as a successor to the Imperial Royal Austrian State Railways (kkStB), but was incorporated into the Deutsche Reichsbahn during the 1938–1945 Anschluss. It was reformed in 1947, using the slightly different Österreichische Bundesbahnen name, and remains in existence in this form.
Major changes currently being made to the Austrian railway network are the construction of the Wien Hauptbahnhof (Vienna main station), the Koralm Railway, the Semmering Base Tunnel and the Brenner Base Tunnel connection with Italy.
Eurobarometer survey conducted in 2018 showed that satisfaction levels of Austrian rail passengers are among the highest in the European Union when it comes to punctuality, reliability and frequency of trains.
Unlike other major railway companies in Europe that offer more flexible cancellation policies, ÖBB only offers two types of tickets: non-exchangeable/non-refundable tickets versus full price tickets.

Vienna Central Station (German: Wien Hauptbahnhof, short form: Wien Hbf) is a partially operational railway station under construction in the Favoriten district, to the south of central Vienna, Austria. It has replaced the Südbahnhof terminal station with a through station which links four major railway lines that converge on Vienna from the North, East, West and South. When completed, the new station will offer significantly improved, principally international, connectivity.[3] By moving the main access to Südtiroler Platz, the new station will be better connected to Vienna's underground system, and will also be accessible by Vienna S-Bahn, tramway and bus lines.

My wife, my Mother in-law, my Father in-law and myself took a trip to Vienna this summer to experience one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It did not disappoint. The transport network in particular is like a good watch - it runs like clockwork and is very well maintained and easy to use.
Westbahnhof is one of the major stations of Vienna and the origin point of the Westbahn (western railway). It also has the S50 line of the S-bahn and the U3 and U6 lines of the U-bahn, not to mention six different tram lines calling outside the station.
