London Video Tour: Westminster
In this video tour, David Hill of New York Habitat ( explores the historic area of Westminster in London! As the political and cultural heart of London, Westminster houses the Palace of Westminster, which is the seat of government, as well as Buckingham Palace, which is the residence of the Royal Family. To the north, Westminster is bounded by Mayfair and Trafalgar Square; to the east and south by the River Thames; and to the west by Knightsbridge and Chelsea. In this video tour, we'll take you to the Houses of Parliament; Westminster Abbey; Buckingham Palace and more!
The Houses of Parliament
The tour starts at the Palace of Westminster, which is more commonly known as the Houses of Parliament. The Parliament have been meeting here since the 13th Century, and the first Royal Palace built on this site even dates back to the 11th Century! The present Palace was built in the 19th Century after the previous palace burned down. Both the House of Commons and the House of Lords meet in the Palace. The building, complete with the Elizabeth Tower or Big Ben, has become one of the most iconic landmarks in London.
Westminster Abbey
Westminster Abbey was constructed almost a thousand years ago. Over the years it has seen numerous coronations and royal weddings. The most recent of these was the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton in 2011. There are also a great number of national figures buried in the Abbey, including Geoffrey Chaucer, Charles Darwin and Isaac Newton. The Abbey's cloister and gardens are also very much worth a visit.
Buckingham Palace
Buckingham Palace is also located in Westminster. Tourists come to the gates of the Palace every day to watch the Changing of the Guards in the courtyard. For some time in the summer you can even visit the Palace's staterooms. Even if you don't visit the inside of the Palace, it's quite a thrill to see the Royal Standard flag wave high above the palace, signaling the Queen is in residence.
Stay in a Westminster Vacation Rental Apartment
If you're looking for your own London residence; consider renting a vacation rental apartment! ( NY Habitat has many vacation rental apartments available in Westminster that will allow you to feel like a true London local! Take for example this lovely Westminster studio apartment: which is located close to Buckingham Palace. Or if you're coming with your family and are in need of a little more space, how about this classic 2-bedroom apartment: which even gives access to the building's swimming pool! Check for our entire selection of apartments in London.
St. James's Park
St. James's Park east of Buckingham Palace is the oldest of the Royal Parks in London. Once part of uncultivated marshland, the park today boasts lush lawns, beautiful trees and even a small lake with two islands. The colony of pelicans that inhabit the park are a marvel to see. At the eastern end of the park you'll find the impressive Horse Guards Parade, where tournaments used to be held.
Victoria Station
London Victoria Station is one of the busiest terminuses in London and the UK, and is located right in the middle of Westminster. This makes it very easy to get to Westminster from other parts of the country by train. The station also includes an air terminal to Gatwick Airport, as well as access to many bus lines and the London Underground. The Circle Line, District Line and Victoria Line all have stops at Victoria Station.
Belgrave Square
Belgrave Square in Westminster is one of the most popular residential areas in London. The beautiful white-stuccoed houses are a great example of some of the best of 19th century architecture. Nowadays many of the mansions on the square house embassies.
Westminster's Traditional Pubs
The Grenadier near Belgrave Square is just one of the many great traditional pubs you can find all over in Westminster. These historic pubs often have striking names, such as The Ship & Shovell Pub, The Princess of Wales and Champagne Charlies. At these pubs you can try a traditional serving of fish & chips served with a nice pint of ale!

London 4K - Westminster Drive - Driving Downtown - England
Monday morning drive around Westminster, home to a high concentration of visitor attractions and historic landmarks, including Big Ben, Parliament, Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, the Palace of Westminster, and Westminster Cathedral.
Westminster is an area of central London within the City of Westminster, part of the West End, on the north bank of the River Thames. Westminster's concentration of visitor attractions and historic landmarks, one of the highest in London, includes the Palace of Westminster, Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey and Westminster Cathedral.
Historically the area lay within St Margaret's parish, City & Liberty of Westminster, Middlesex.
The name Westminster (Old English: Westmynstre) originated from the informal description of the abbey church and royal peculiar of St Peter's (Westminster Abbey), literally West of the City of London (indeed, until the Reformation there was a reference to the 'East Minster' at Minories (Holy Trinity Priory, Aldgate) east of the City). The abbey was part of the royal palace that had been created here by Edward the Confessor. It has been the home of the permanent institutions of England's government continuously since about 1200 (High Middle Ages' Plantagenet times), and from 1707 the British Government — formally titled Her Majesty's Government.
In a government context, Westminster often refers to the Parliament of the United Kingdom, located in the UNESCO World Heritage Palace of Westminster — also known as the Houses of Parliament. The closest tube stations are Westminster and St James's Park, on the Jubilee, Circle, and District lines.
The area is the centre of Her Majesty's Government, with Parliament in the Palace of Westminster and most of the major Government ministries known as Whitehall, itself the site of the royal palace that replaced that at Westminster.
Within the area is Westminster School, a major public school which grew out of the Abbey, and the University of Westminster, attended by over 20,000 students. Bounding Westminster to the north is Green Park, a Royal Park of London.

This bridge actually links the bankside to the city of London and it crosses River Thames.
6 - Take a Selfie at 10 Downing Street: 10 Downing street has been known as the local of prime ministers since 1735 and this is one of the reasons why people love to go and check the place just from the outside and no matter if they took a couple of selfies or pictures there.

The Palace of Westminster is the meeting place of the House of Commons and the House of Lords, the two houses of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. Commonly known as the Houses of Parliament after its occupants, the Palace lies on the north bank of the River Thames in the City of Westminster, in central London.
Its name, which is derived from the neighbouring Westminster Abbey, may refer to either of two structures: the Old Palace, a medieval building complex destroyed by fire in 1834, and its replacement, the New Palace that stands today. The palace is owned by the monarch in right of the Crown and for ceremonial purposes, retains its original status as a royal residence. The building is managed by committees appointed by both houses, which report to the Speaker of the House of Commons and the Lord Speaker.
The first royal palace was built on the site in the 11th century, and Westminster was the primary residence of the Kings of England until fire destroyed much of the complex in 1512. After that, it served as the home of the Parliament of England, which had been meeting there since the 13th century, and also as the seat of the Royal Courts of Justice, based in and around Westminster Hall. In 1834, an even greater fire ravaged the heavily rebuilt Houses of Parliament, and the only significant medieval structures to survive were Westminster Hall, the Cloisters of St Stephen's, the Chapel of St Mary Undercroft, and the Jewel Tower.
The subsequent competition for the reconstruction of the Palace was won by the architect Charles Barry, whose design was for new buildings in the Gothic Revival style, specifically inspired by the English Perpendicular Gothic style of the 14th–16th centuries. The remains of the Old Palace (with the exception of the detached Jewel Tower) were incorporated into its much larger replacement, which contains over 1,100 rooms organised symmetrically around two series of courtyards and has a floor area of 112,476 m2 (1,210,680 sq ft).[1] Part of the New Palace's area of 3.24 hectares (8 acres) was reclaimed from the Thames, which is the setting of its nearly 300-metre long (980 ft) façade,[1] called the River Front. Barry was assisted by Augustus Pugin, a leading authority on Gothic architecture and style, who designed the interior of the Palace. Construction started in 1840 and lasted for 30 years, suffering great delays and cost overruns, as well as the death of both leading architects; works for the interior decoration continued intermittently well into the 20th century. Major conservation work has been carried out since then to reverse the effects of London's air pollution, and extensive repairs took place after the Second World War, including the reconstruction of the Commons Chamber following its bombing in 1941.
The Palace is one of the centres of political life in the United Kingdom; Westminster has become a metonym for the UK Parliament, and the Westminster system of government has taken its name after it. The Elizabeth Tower, in particular, which is often referred to by the name of its main bell, Big Ben, is an iconic landmark of London and the United Kingdom in general, one of the most popular tourist attractions in the city, and an emblem of parliamentary democracy. The Palace of Westminster has been a Grade I listed building since 1970 and part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.
Westminster Abbey, London (1080p)
Westminster Abbey is a large Gothic church in the City of Westminster, London, United Kingdom. The church is located just west of the Palace of Westminster. Westminster Abbey is the traditional place of coronation and burial site for English since 1066, later British and later still monarchs of the Commonwealth realms. The church is the final resting place of seventeen monarchs, and is one of the most important Gothic buildings in the country, with the medieval shrine of an Anglo-Saxon saint still at its heart.
