New Yorkers brace for winter storm
Manhattan, New York City
1. Wide shot New York City skyline
2. Wide shot people of walking down sidewalk with snow falling
3. Mid shot of people walking on sidewalk with umbrellas
4. Wide shot of cars and trucks moving along rainy street
5. Close up of sleet and hail on street
6. SOUNDBITE: (English) Jane Ridley, vox pop:
I just can't believe it. I mean, I thought we were going to be going into spring by now, and suddenly I open the window and look out and it's just freezing again. It's so unpredictable I just can't really cope with it, really. I'm just not used to this, being a foreigner. But I guess this is maybe what New Yorkers have to put up with. But it is kind of freaky.
7. Pull out and pan of man walking down sidewalk
8. SOUNDBITE (English) Willie Colon, vox pop:
Oh, this is very bad. Two days ago it was, like, really nice, and all of a sudden, Mother Nature just wants to treat us real bad, so, it's like real sticky, real gushy and, I don't know, we don't deserve this. We've been having a lot of bad weather, so, other than that, we hope for the best.

16. SOUNDBITE (English) Dianne Distassio, traveller:
I mean its disappointing, but we'd rather be safe. A lot of people who are kind of grumbling wish we had just got a call from Jet Blue letting us know that our flight was cancelled and, you know, we thanked them. They're refunding us fully and I wish them good luck with all the irate people we are going to be talking to today.

I don't want to go if it's not safe, so...

STORYLINE:
A winter storm moved into the US northeastern coastal region on Friday, wreaking havoc for travellers.
Many airlines cancelled flights in the New York, Philadelphia and Boston areas, and schools shut down in and around New York City.
Snow, hail, sleet and rain began falling before dawn, and more was expected through Friday night and into Saturday morning. New Yorkers and visitors alike were not happy as they braved the freezing and slippery streets.
Londoner Jane Ridley said it was 'freaky.
It's so unpredictable I just can't really cope with it, really. I'm just not used to this, being a foreigner. But I guess this is maybe what New Yorkers have to put up with, she added.
New Yorker Willie Colon said the bad weather was not expected.
Two days ago it was, like, really nice, and all of a sudden, Mother Nature just wants to treat us real bad, he said.
At New York City's airports, many airlines, including JetBlue, cancelled flights early in the day.
JetBlue has been under pressure to do better in bad weather since passengers were stranded in planes at Kennedy Airport for up to ten and a-half hours during a storm last month.
JetBlue was unable to resume normal operations for days afterward because flight crews weren't where they were supposed to be.
The airline cancelled more than 200 flights today, about one-third of all JetBlue flights.
Delta Airlines has also cancelled more than 200 flights and American Airlines has cancelled about 120 flights to or from New York and other Northeastern airports.
Northwest Airlines cancelled about 35 flights to or from the East Coast, and an airport spokeswoman said Philadelphia International Airport had about 30 departures cancelled and numerous delays.

July 9, 1929 I Wonder Where My Easy Rider's Gone Frankie Jaxon
Frankie Half-Pint Jaxon, born Frank Devera Jackson (March 3, 1896 or 1897 – May 15, 1953), was an African American vaudeville singer, stage designer and comedian, popular in the 1920s and 1930s.
He was born in Montgomery, Alabama, United States, orphaned, and raised in Kansas City, Missouri. His nickname of Half Pint referred to his 5'2 height. He started in show business around 1910 as a singer in Kansas City, before travelling extensively with medicine shows in Texas, and then touring the eastern seaboard. His feminine voice and outrageous manner, often as a female impersonator, established him as a crowd favorite. By 1917 he had begun working regularly in Atlantic City, New Jersey and in Chicago, Illinois, often with such performers as Bessie Smith and Ethel Waters, whose staging he helped design.
He served slightly less than a year in the Army in 1918–1919 and rose to the rank of sergeant. In the late 1920s he sang with top jazz bands when they passed through Chicago, working with Bennie Moten, King Oliver and Freddie Keppard among others. He also performed and recorded with the pianists Cow Cow Davenport, Tampa Red and Georgia Tom Dorsey, recording with the latter pair under the name of The Black Hillbillies. He also recorded with the Harlem Hamfats. In the 1930s he was often on radio in the Chicago area, and led his own band, Frankie Half Pint Jaxon and his Quarts Of Joy.
Jaxon appeared with Duke Ellington in a film short called Black and Tan Fantasy (1929). Cab Calloway's Minnie the Moocher (1931) is based both musically and lyrically on Jaxon's Willie the Weeper (1927).
In 1941 he retired from show business and worked at The Pentagon in Washington, D.C.
