Have your own armored mini-military adventure
-- Video and Article by Devon Puglia
It's the most fun you can have on twelve wheels.
For $950 and up, Kasota, Minnesota-based Drive-a-Tank lets ordinary civilians experience a mini-military adventure, firing off a .30 caliber machine gun, piloting a British-made tank through a muddy obstacle course, and obliterating cars beneath the treads of a Larry, a 60-ton steel behemoth.
But Drive-A-Tank is not the only option for civilians craving a military experience at home.
This month, Florida-based Incredible Adventures is offering tourists a four-day simulated counter-terrorism operation in Miami for $3,995 that includes boot camp, martial arts training, and instruction in a proven method of kidnapping, used on terrorists in the Middle East.
How To RV in the Winter
We've been RV snowbirds for 8 winters in a row, mostly in the Desert Southwest. This year, for the very first time, we'll be spending the winter in the RV in a northern location.

Kozy World Heater Feet Kit:
0000 Steel Wool:
Granted, the Lower Mainland of British Columbia isn't exactly Manitoba when it comes to winter, but we're far enough up in the mountains to get some freezing temperatures and snow here.
We show you all the steps we're taking to winter in our motorhome. We'll demonstrate how to keep the water hose from freezing and how to keep ourselves warm too. We'll cover water hose insulation, heat tape, the differences between all five sources of heat we have available, moisture & humidity control, and even pest control.
We'll also be using our Extend-a-Stay (also known as a Stay-a-While or an Extend-a-Flow) to connect to a large external propane tank.
SInce this is our first time dealing with winter in the rig, we've done a lot of reading and learned a lot from our friends and neighbors up here in beautiful, friendly BC. The site we're on has 30-amp electric, so we have to be particularly aware of our power usage.
Luckily, Birgit & Greg, whose site we're using, were nice enough to let us tap into their super-size external propane tank (we'll be paying for the propane we use, of course). So propane shouldn't be a problem, but we'll still want to keep our usage to a minimum, since it's expensive, and propane use can cause excess moisture to build up in the rig.
There are lots of RVers who know way more than we do about RVing in REAL winter deep freeze conditions, but we wanted to give other cold weather newbies a feel for some of the steps we've taken to prepare for it. We've seen a lot more online about winterizing an RV for storage, and we wanted to add some information about living on board too.
NOTE: We mention using fine 0000 steel wool in this video. It is EXTREMELY FLAMMABLE, and care should be used in storing and using it. To see our video demonstrating how to start a fire using only steel wool and a 9-volt battery, click here:

Resorts of the Northwoods
“Going to the resort”… a phrase that conjures so many memories and meanings for generations of Minnesotans. From the resort owners and workers who are passionate about their business, to the visitors who eagerly await their escape “up north”, the story of the resort industry in northern Minnesota is one that has touched the lives of countless people. From the large all-inclusive destinations, to the small “mom & pop” seasonal operations, these “Resorts of the Northwoods” have made an indelible impact on our history and culture.
Steamship America - Full Documentary
Before high speed internet, telephones and even Highway 61, Minnesota's North Shore was connected by water--specifically a fleet of sailing vessels and steamers that hauled mail, fish, freight and passengers to communities up and down the remote coastline. The Steamer America was a star in the early 1900s, with her speed and relative luxury she became a vital lifeline and a friend to many. Her eventual sinking in 1928 was like losing a family member. WDSE's new historical documentary weaves oral histories, new & vintage photographs, newspaper accounts and dramatic images to capture life on the shore in the early days of the 20th Century--a time when the Steamer America became legend.

Additional info about Rochester:
Rochester is a city in the U.S. state of Minnesota and is the county seat of Olmsted County. Located on both banks of the Zumbro River, the city has a population of 106,769 according to the 2010 United States Census. The U.S. Census Bureau estimated 2012 population is 108,992. It is Minnesota's third-largest city and the largest city located outside of the Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of 2012, the Rochester metropolitan area has a population of 209,607.
Rochester is in Olmsted County, one of only four counties in Minnesota without a natural lake. Artificial lakes exist in the area, including Silver Lake, a dammed portion of the South Fork Zumbro River just below the convergence with Silver Creek near the city center. The lake is used as a cooling pond by the coal-burning power plant operated by Rochester Public Utilities at Silver Lake. The heated water from the plant generally prevents the lake from freezing over during the winter. The open water attracts large numbers of migrating Giant Canada Geese. Rochester has many parks such as Silver Lake and Soldiers Field. A major flood in 1978 led the city to embark on an expensive flood-control project that involved altering many nearby rivers and streams.
Rochester features a humid continental climate, with very warm summers and very cold winters.
As of the 2005--2007 American Community Survey, the median household income was $57,957 and the median family income was $74,467.
There were 43,025 households. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 3.04.
The median age in the city was 35 years.
The Mayo Clinic forms the core of Rochester's economy. It employs over 30,000 people in the city and every year draws over 2 million visitors to the city. The clinic's many facilities, along with hotels, restaurants and retail stores, comprise nearly all of the city's downtown. Excluding the state government, the Mayo Clinic is the largest employer in Minnesota. Other care providers, including the Rochester Federal Medical Center, are significant employers.
Rochester's park system is large, with more than 100 sites covering 5 square miles (13 km2). The city maintains 85 miles (137 km) of paved trails. The south terminus of the Douglas State Trail, built on an abandoned railroad grade, is in Rochester.
Rochester is located in Minnesota's 1st congressional district, represented by Mankato educator Tim Walz, a member of the Democratic Farmer Labor Party| (DFL]. The city includes parts of Minnesota state legislative districts 29 and 30.
The mayor of Rochester is Ardell Brede. The city has an early defibrillation program; all marked city police cars carry defibrillators.
Education
Rochester Public Schools enroll 16,300 students in 23 public primary and secondary schools.
The city had long been a fixture on Money magazine's Best Places to Live index, and was ranked number 67 on the 2006 list, and in the top 3, including number one multiple times, from 1993-1997.
Rochester ranked second in Quality of Life by American City Business Journal.
Rochester ranked sixth in Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine's 10 Best Cities for the Next Decade.
Golf Digest and Golf for Women both ranked Rochester as the fifth best golf market in the midwest in 2006.
In 2009, US News and World Report ranked Rochester in the Top Ten Best Places to Grow Up and ninth for Best Cities for job seeking retirees.
Rochester was ranked the 5th best city to retire in by the Milken Institute.

Dealer Spotlight | Pedego Myrtle Beach | Aaron Maynard
Colonel Aaron Maynard spent 26 years of his life serving in the United States Air Force. After decades of serious, stressful work, the 50-year-old planned to retire and try something different. His wife Michele agreed that a change of pace was needed. But they weren’t quite sure what shape that transformation should take. “I wanted to stay active and continue to interact with people,” Aaron explained. “And, I wanted to have fun.”
The answer came when he and Michele purchased a pair of Pedego electric bikes. As Aaron saw it, introducing the public to Pedego would help him continue to work at something that would help others, be a new career, and it would allow him to stick to the fun part of the plan. “It had to be something I was passionate about,” he explains. “And Pedego Electric Bikes was it.”
Gone are the days when the golden age of 65 meant you retired, sat in a rocker, and counted your memories. According to Gallup, a whopping 49 percent of Boomers don’t plan to retire until after age 66. And of those, 10 percent say they’ll never retire at all. But that doesn’t mean they plan to stay in the same jobs. The trick has been to transfer to something fresh, new, energizing and enjoyable — and in the Maynards’ case, their new career is centered on fun.
A big plus is that Aaron’s job skills from his military career transferred nicely into his future as a Pedego store owner. His ability to work well with people, his strong communication skills, and his talents as a problem solver made him a great candidate for small business ownership. Also, his degree in Business/Marketing prepared him to be successful. Of course, this story isn’t just about Aaron. Returning to their home state of South Carolina from London, England, the Maynards made Pedego Myrtle Beach a family adventure. Their sons — Reid, 23, and Max, 21 — work at the store, too. Their daughter Emma, 15, works around her school schedule to help in the store as well. Even their golden retriever Addie serves as the shop mascot, with customers stopping by just to see her. The bonus was the family’s shared interest in health and fitness. It all came together to make them perfect Pedego store owners.
The direction of the Maynards’ career move is not entirely unexpected. Early in life, Aaron imagined business ownership. “I always dreamed of working for myself and including my family in the adventure,” he said. And because it has taken a couple of decades for this entrepreneur to reach for his goal, the rewards are very sweet. He has enjoyed being at the store every day since it opened in April 2015.
“I look forward to coming in every morning. I don’t think of it as work at all. I call it going to fun!” The Maynards have been able to interact with people, as they hoped. In fact, these interactions have been an exceptionally positive part of the experience. “Part of the fun is watching people’s reactions to our amazing bikes,” said Maynard. “They always have a smile, a big wide smile! It’s all about FUN!”
Aaron likes to say that he traded in his military uniform for a new kind — shorts and flip-flops — and from all accounts, it fits just right. Instead of greeting a work day of stress, now he says, “Hello, fun!”
