Skagway, Alaska Cruise Port Guide: White Pass & Yukon Route Railway
The White Pass and Yukon Route Railway is a popular attraction for cruise guests visiting Skagway, Alaska. Completed in 1900, the railroad was the primary means of transportation for prospectors travelling over the White Pass to the goldfields in the Yukon.
The “White Pass Summit Excursion” allows guests to ride in vintage-style passenger cars along the same route as gold prospectors of the past while seeing spectacular views, gold rush points of interest, and more. The narrated tour takes about two-and-a-half hours as the train travels forty miles round-trip to the White Pass summit at 2,888 feet in elevation.

It's one amazing beautiful train trip.

White Pass & Yukon Route Railway (Skagway) Adventure
This video brings the experience of the White Pass and Yukon Route Railway to your screen. The video captures several key and exciting moments of the journey. Captured and presented in this video are mountains, valleys, trees, rivers, historic buildings, tunnels and even the occasional waterfall.
In May 2018, I went on an Alaska cruise with my sister on the Carnival Legend. The cruise lasted around a week and it took us to several amazing ports in Alaska. One such port was Skagway. Skagway is a small city (population around 1,000) in southeast Alaska.
Skagway is the home of the White Pass and Yukon Route Railway. If you are going to Skagway, I strongly recommend going on this train journey. The round trip lasts about 2 ½ to 3 hours. The trip begins in downtown Skagway and takes you up into the mountains to Carcross and then back to Skagway. The train station is easy to access and find and is not far from the port if you reached Skagway by cruise ship.

This is the story of the Great Alaskan Goldrush, and how the White pass and Yukon railway was born.

The year was 1896, George Carmack, skookum Jim and Dawson charlie struck gold
...but just enough gold for the Seattle newspapers to catch wind of the discovery, and spread headlines across the nation - sparking the Alaskan Goldrush
Let's travel back in time and embark on this epic journey that 100,000 men endured over a century ago on foot.
These men gathered every dime they had, left their families and strived to be among the first to reach Klondike - east of the Alaskan border - in pursuit of their share of the gold. The journey, however, was treacherous.
The 2 primary routes to the riches were the Chilkoot trail (shorter but daunting compared to the White Pass Trail, which had its own fair share of perils.
The steel cantilever bridge built in 1901 was the worlds tallest at the time and was operational until 1969
The train through its winding 67-mile course climbs to an elevation of 2865 feet. Back in the day, men had to summit this with literally 2,000 pounds of supplies - a law imposed by Canadian authorities.
With the stampede of hopefuls, who knew absolutely nothing of surviving the Canadian wilderness or hiking thousands of miles, the Canadian Government took measures to ensure their survival. Therefore in order to be granted passage they needed years worth of supplies with them.
Gear such as 150 lbs. of Bacon, 400 lbs of flour, 15 lbs. Salt, 2 pairs heavy trousers a Coffee pot and 1 dozen heavy wool socks...all in all totaling to 2000 lbs of supplies.
Our conductor gave us insights as to how thousands of men tried to accomplish this.
They had to either make over 30 trips back and forth in order to haul all of the supplies, making their entire journey approximately 2,500 miles to the end of the trail. Some hired help, some used pack animals, but no option was quick or easy or cheap.
30,000 made it Bennet, BC. What laid ahead was 500miles of frozen Yukon river, between the men and the goldfields.
Through the course of the winter, people hand-built rafts, Finally as the winters mellowed on May of 1898 over 7000 rafts set sail.
The hazardous rapids along the Miles Canyon led to the demise of thousands of these hand-built rafts, several hundred people died on this last leg of the journey.
All in all, of the original 100,000 men that began the journey, about 30,000 reached the final destination of Dawson City, no more than 4,000 found gold, but only a few hundred actually struck it rich.
The idea of the White Pass and Yukon train was sparked from the vast dangers and time it took for men to complete their journey, The construction was completed in 1901, and has stood the test of time granting us the luxury to be in this moment and ride the very train.

Over summer I went on an Alaskan cruise and this was one of the stops. After I was done riding the train I took some videos of them crossing through the junction. This trip was May 2016, and it was extraordinarily warm in Alaska. This day was 70 degrees in Skagway and still mid 60s at the top of White pass. We splurged for Luxury class on this trip and was well worth it.

The Klondike Gold Rush began after an American adventurer George Carmack and his wife Kate (who belonged to the Tagish First Nation), her brother Skookum Jim and her nephew Dawson Charlie struck gold in the Bonanza Creek area of the Klondike region in the Yukon in 1896… It was not a big quantity, but word reached Seattle and San Francisco and soon newspapers across the United States had screaming headlines about massive goldfields up north.
It is said that people in the US abandoned their jobs, homes and families to travel north – and most had no idea of the deadly bite of Canadian winters.
Reports from those days say over 100,000 men and women embarked on the dangerous journey from the Alaskan coastal towns of Skagway and Dyea to travel across the Yukon River and then sail on to the Klondike River, a distance of some 4,000 kilometers.
Only 30,000 reached their final destination of Dawson City, many being forced to turn back sick and hungry or killed en route on the treacherous ice-bound routes. There were two ways to Dawson City – one the famous Chilkoot Trail from the town of Dyea, which was shorter but steeper and more forbidding and the White Pass Trail from Skagway, which had its own set of dangers of narrow, snowy mountain paths and rockfalls…
The wealthier adventurers hired other miners or bought pack horses to cover the route. On the White Pass Trail, hundreds of these animals perished through sheer exhaustion and one of the landmarks on the mountain trail is named Dead Horse Gulch. Starving miners ate the flesh of the dead horses and many were said to have gone insane.
Once they reached Bennet In BC, they had to cross 800 kilometers through the frozen waters of the Yukon on crude, hand-built boats. When the winter waned and the ice began to thaw, some 7000 rafts took to the water at Bennet, most not knowing about the violent rapids along the Miles Canyon of the Yukon River. Thousands of boats were destroyed and hundreds of miners died in this last leg of their mad quest.
Of the 30,000 who reached Dawson city and the goldfields, only 4000 found gold and only a few hundred struck it rich. Hundreds more died in fires that raged often across shanty towns and in epidemics.
The Klondike Gold Rush is today considered one of the great chapters of Western and Northern Canadian history.

The last stop we will make in Alaska before heading back down to the lower 48 is in Skagway. This old mining town (gold rush of 1898) is now primarily a tourist attraction. It is a National Historic Park and well worth seeing. One of the main attractions is the White Pass and Yukon Railroad trip that takes you just into Canada to see the path that the miners had to take to get to the gold fields in the Klondike. Spectacular scenery along this narrow gauge railroad built in 1898. On cruise day the streets come alive with the throngs from as many as four cruise ships docked at once. Otherwise, it is a bucolic little town with its own special charm.
