------
Laʻaloa Bay is a popular recreation area in Kailua-Kona, on the Big Island of Hawaiʻi.
Also known as Magic Sands or White Sands Beach, the official name is Laʻaloa Beach County Park. During calm weather, it is one of the only fine white sandy beaches in the Kailua-Kona area.
It is also sometimes called Disappearing Sands, since the sand is washed out in a storm several times a year. A strong surf break on the shore can be dangerous, but makes it a favorite for bodyboarding by experienced locals, even under moderate surf conditions.
Just north of the beach is Pahoehoe Beach County Park. Although the shoreline here is rocky lava with a few coral pebbles, there are picnic tables, restrooms, and running water. In the Hawaiian language, la'a loa means very sacred.
Several Archaeological sites are in the area.
The ruins of haukalua Heiau (an Ancient Hawaiian temple) are on a point just south of the beach, at the parking lot which was added in 2000.
The stone structure was cleared and restored and a small ceremonial platform (lele) constructed by descendants of the people who lived in this area for hundreds of years.
A small rocky cove south of the point is popular for scuba diving in calm conditions.
In 1994 after the County of Hawaii announced plans to build an 80 stall parking lot, Hawaiian Kupuna (elders) helped form a group known as the La’aloa Ohana (family). This led to agreements being made to create a Hawaiian Cultural/Educational center in 1995. In June 1995 more than 13 members of the La’aloa Ohana were arrested for attempted camping, even though according to police reports a majority of ohana had left the park, prior to its closing. The ohana continued to advocate for complete Preservation Planning and in 1997 a detailed Community based Preservation Plan was completed. The effect of this Plan was that only 25 parking stalls could be developed. While the County of Hawaii said in the 1997 Environmental Impact Statement that they would install protective measures for the Historic site prior to any construction, in 2000 they built the parking lot, and as of 2014 the Protective measures have yet to be completed.
In August 2014, based on the continued advocacy by La’aloa Ohana members, the State of Hawaii Historic Preservation Division, supported by the Department of Land and Natural Resources Conservation Investigators, forwarded to the Mayor of the County of Hawaii a scathing letter and demand they implement all of the Protective measures, or potentially they could face millions of dollars in fines. In December 2014 the County of Hawaii is currently starting to implement the Preservation Plan. Unfortunately many of the historic sites have now been severely damaged.
Based on the ongoing and tireless efforts of members of the La'aloa Ohana, on May 10, 2017 the County of Hawaii announced it would be closing the parking lot at La'aloa Beach Park on May 17, 2017, indefinitely, due to the ongoing desecration caused by the parking lot. Please visit the La'aloa Beach Park Facebook page for additional information, we look forward to your kokua.
It is located on Aliʻi Drive in the Kona District at coordinates 19°35′38″N 155°58′17″W.
About a mile to the north is Holualoa Bay, and a mile to the south is Kahaluʻu Bay.

5 -09-15 Beach Slamming Waves- Kailua Kona, Hawaii
To use this video in a commercial player, advertising or in broadcasts, please email Viral Spiral: deals@viralspiralgroup.com
I was going to call it How tourists die in Hawaii but, didn't want to scare people from coming here. This is White Sands Beach Park. Also known as Magic Sands, Tragic Slams and more. Located on Ali'i Dr. Large surf generally takes all the sand away in the winter. Sometimes in the summer too if we get a large enough WSW swell. There are menacing rocks just underneath that sand. Best know how to go over the falls of a wave correctly or you'll be getting to know our local emergency room personnel. By the way, they are very nice at the ER.
This day we had a moderate SSW swell. Most often tourists neglect to watch what's going on before venturing out into the ocean. Even when the lifeguard warns people they still go out and either get injured or need to be rescued.
When the surf is pounding dislocated shoulders neck and back injuries are common here. Lifeguards had to do a few rescues. Sometimes the fire Dept parks at the street just waiting for the next victim.
Myself, I surfed 3 hours elsewhere that day and was on my way home and decided to stop and get some of the action on my GoPro Hero 3+.
The video starts out in the narrow view. Not as sharp as in medium or wide. Also shot in Protune flat at 60fps. 1080p so, watch at the highest setting. Was hoping for it to look better. Maybe next time. Sun was in and out.

Kukio beach, Big Island, Hawaii
Kukio Bay Overview
Located just north of Kikaua Point Beach Park on the Big Island’s Kohala coast you will find the white sands of Kukio Beach. Located approximately 18 miles from downtown Kailua-Kona, this lovely white-sand beach can be reached through the entrance gate to Four Seasons Hualalai Resort.
Framing Kukio Beach’s white sands, you will find coconut palms, ironwood and mesquite trees with a few small brackish-water ponds adjacent to the shoreline. Lava rocks contour the length of the beach’s tideline, forming tidal pools where little ones can check out the marine life. Because of these rocks, water shoes are suggested if you’re wading out into the bay. A good access point is a sand bagged spot at the north end of the shoreline. To enjoy your day at the beach, make sure to bring along fresh water, snacks, a hat and plenty of reef-safe sunscreen, there’s not a lot of shade along Kukio Beach, but there is an area of coconut palms just south of the main beach at Kikaua Point.
Kukio Beach Activities
The main bay is not the best for swimming or snorkeling due to its frequently murky water and lava rocks, however, the water in Kukio Bay is relatively calm in the morning and excellent for stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking and canoeing. During the winter months, the swells are abundant, but the rocky shoreline discourages many board sports. Visitors to the area will often spot Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles (honu) resting along the shores or even spinner dolphins out in the bay’s expanse.
Kukio beach connects up with Kikaua Point Beach Park at the southern end, offering access to a coconut palm lined park and a small lagoon, perfect for kids to swim or for adults to cool off in a more gentle beach environment. This area also offers showers, restrooms and drinking water.

Hapuna Beach in Big Island Hawaii is beautiful and has wonderful waves. I don't know how to swim, but I heard if you go farther to the water there is a drop off, and sharks! There was nothing to see in the shallow water, but it was awesome playing with the waves. This is where you go for boogie boarding?
Hilo side was cloudy when we got there, but this is like a jungle - full of trees and very green! You don't feel like you're in Hawaii.
Thanks for watching.
I do not own the music.

Best Beach On Big Island - Hawaii
In this video my wife (Melissa) and I are in search of the
BEST beach on the Big Island of Hawaii and we think we've found it! KEKAHA KAI State Park (Manini Owali Section) has to be one of the nicest white sand beaches on the Big Island of Hawaii. On this beach you'll find great snorkeling, beautiful white sand beaches, showered with surrounding black lava-rock, sea turtles swimming around the reef, a ton of reef fish and so much more. This beach is a 10 out of 10 in our opinion. Manini' owali beach is a secluded and small white sand beach at Kua Bay.

Take a Scenic Drive With Us Through Historic South Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii
On this trip through South Kona we will be start by traveling South on Highway 19, also called Mamalahoa Highway. Once you have passed Kailua-Kona, you are officially in South Kona.
The video begins in the town, Kealakekua. In this town you will find numerous coffee farms to stop at to try coffee and tour the farm. Some farms are free and some charge an entrance fee. Two of our favorites is Greenwell Farms and Kona Joe's Coffee.
Also in Kealakekua are many antique shops. Keep an eye out for them. They are all on Mamalahoa Highway.
Once you see the Kealakekua Ranch Center on your left, there will be a large fruit stand on your right. Stop here for fresh, local produce.
Between mile marker 108 and 105 you will pass more coffee farms, the Coffee Shack, a great place to stop for breakfast with a beautiful view of the coast and Super J's, the best Hawaiian food on the island.
At mile marker 104, you make a right onto route 160. This beautiful, scenic road will take you to Pu'uhonua OHonaunau Historic National Park. Stop here for the ranger talk and learn about Hawaiian culture. This park is a great place to sit and relax, learn about Hawaii's history and watch the sunset. This is a historic park, so there is no swimming.
Once you leave the park, make a left at the 2nd street after the park exit to go to Honaunau Bay. On the left you will see an area where most peopel are entering the water, this is called Lae Kele. Sometimes referred to as Two Step it was ranked one of the top 10 snorkeling spots in the world and one of the best in Hawaii. Please be warned, the water is deep here. Only go in if you are a strong swimmer. This is also not a state or national park. There are no showers, life guards, places to rent snorkels or flush toilets, just port a potties. There is no food stand place to purchase water. There are some picnic tables and very little shade. Although many people refer to this area as Two Step, please try to use the Hawaiian name for this magical spot. Do not enter or exit the water in locations other than these steps to avoid hurting yourself or the reef!
Once you leave Two Step, turn back onto Route 160 and go back up the way you came until you see Painted Church Road. Make a left onto this windy road. Less than a mile onto this road, on your right, will be Saint Benedict's Church, also known as the painted church. This church was painted by one priest. He only had green brown and white house paint donated by the farmers in the area. He used pigments made by local plants to create the other colors.
Once you leave the painted church, continue on Painted Church Road until you reach a dead end. Make a left onto Middle Keei Road and at the next stop sign another left onto Napoopoo Road. These roads are narrow and windy, but have very little traffic. Drive slow and enjoy the scenery. It is polite to pull over to allow people to pass. Many people live on these roads and may want to drive faster.
Less than one mile down Napoopoo Road, you will see a sign on your right for Big Island Bees. Turn right at the next road to stop at the country's largest organic honey farm. They give beekeeping tours three times a day (we recommend signing up in advance) or you can stop in to sample their honeys and browse their free bee museum and honey store anytime.
Once you leave Big Island Bees, make a right onto Napoopoo Road to continue down toward the ocean. Once you hit the dead end, make another right and park in the lot. This bay is where Captain Cook first landed and where he was killed. You can see his monument on the opposite side. The beach is rocky, making it not an ideal swimming spot.
For a nice place to swim, Make a U-turn in the parking lot and go straight less than one mile (this road is called Pu'uhonua). Turn right onto Manini Beach Road. Follow this road until you see a parking lot. Park here and take a break at this beautiful beach in the bay. You can also snorkel here, but there is not much of a reef. This is a popular spot for people to kayak or stand up paddle board. You will often see dolphins in the water in the morning.
That is the end of your South Kona trip! The fastest way back to the highway is to go back up Napoopoo Road and make a left onto the highway.
Drive slow, stop along the way and explore! There's lots of farm stands, coffee farms and other fun things to see.

White Sands Beach Park (Kailua-Kona Hawaii)
5 - 31 - 15 Magic Sands Waves - Kailua Kona, Hawaii GoPro Hero 3+
Normally I don't have people in my video that are as close as in the start of this video. These two were warned about the dangers of standing where they did. I really don't like shooting video where there are crowds of people so, when I do, I try and set up so there's little chance of someone standing directly in front. This was during one of the best sets and surges so, they are in the video. Camera was running before they walked down there.
I always say there are two types of visitors to Hawaii.
Tourists and Statistics. Don't be a Statistic when visiting Hawaii.
This is White Sands Beach Park. Also known as Magic Sands, Tragic Slams and more. Located on Ali'i Dr. Large surf generally takes all the sand away in the winter. Myself, I surfed elsewhere that day.
Shot with a GoPro Hero 3+. Open back housing to capture sound better. Remotely operated via my Motorola Moto X and the GoPro app. 1080p 60 fps. Nikon version was 30 fps.
