Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge: Hiking the Wichita Mountains in Oklahoma
On this hiking trip Kyle and I have traveled to the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge located in Oklahoma. Oklahoma is home to a mountain range called the Wichita Mountain Range. The Wichita Mountains are located in the southwestern portion of Oklahoma.It is the principal relief system in the Southern Oklahoma Aulacogen. It is the result of a failed continental rift. The Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge is located in southwestern Oklahoma near Lawton, Oklahoma. The Wildlife Refuge has protected unique wildlife habitats since 1901 and is the oldest managed wildlife facility in the United States Fish and Wildlife Service system. The following list is a list of hiking trails located at the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge along with the miles.

4. Kite Trail (1.2 miles)
5. Bison Trail (5.7 miles)

We went on this adventure to find the next place for our YouTuber meetup and decided to hike some trail while out. We believe we were on Elk Mountain trail and Charon's Garden Trail, but went off trail at some point and were just hiking the mountain and no specific trail. It is great fun and is highly recommended. Some trails are more advanced, but there are easy trails all the way up to advanced. Also available is Wichita Mountains camping. The wildlife Refuge has many campgrounds to choose from. There are several events and recreational activities available such as Wichita Mountains rock climbing and the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge elk hunt.

Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge
The Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge is a one-of-a-kind destination in southwest Oklahoma. Located near Cache and Lawton, the refuge spans over 59,000 majestic acres and is home to free range buffalo, Texas longhorn cattle, prairie dogs, elk and deer. Visitors will be astounded by the amount of incredible scenery and wildlife offered within the refuge. Recreation opportunities include mountain biking, rock climbing, rappelling, hiking, camping, picnic areas and fishing. While visiting the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge, drive to the top of Mount Scott, which stands 2,464 feet above sea level. Additional attractions located within the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge include the Holy City of the Wichitas, Quanah Parker Lake, Parallel Forest, Forty-Foot Hole, and Narrows Canyon.

We woke up a 2am to head out to the Charon's Garden Wilderness near Indiahoma, OK for the weekend. We were blown away, not just because it was so windy that weekend, but because the whole area was just incredible. Who knew Oklahoma had real mountains? The abundance of wildlife was worth the drive alone. First trip of many to this wilderness playground.

▶︎ A great place for wildlife watching
From when I was younger I remember going to the Wichita Mountains to see the Holy City and the prairie dog city. It has always been a place of fond memories and a lot of fun for not only myself but the entire family. It wasn’t until more recent years however that I was aware that there was a camping area there right within the wildlife preserve itself.
In the footprint of the mountains this campground welcomes both tent and RV campers looking to enjoy an overnight stay or more lengthy stay. Primitive camping is available with a park and walk through a short trail or in camp there are both electrical and non-electrical sites with prices ranging for these from $8 to $20.
I noticed that the in campground sites are pretty typical in that they offer both fire rings and picnic tables. They do have a shower and restroom which is available during non-winter months and other toilets for usage during the cooler months. They do have drinking water available here which is also nice considering distance to nearest stores.
The best feature of this campground is not the campground itself it is the access you have to the refuge area where you can on any given day see herds of deer, buffalo, long horn cattle, turkey and of course prairie dogs. A lot of times you will find these wandering around into camp itself.
The area has become more and more popular for rock climbing and hiking with several people setting up basecamp at this campground. This campground does have posted closings of gate hours so you cannot explore in the area past these posted times (during summer 10 during week or 11 on weekends).
TIPS:
Check into the visitor center for lists of guided tours for Bald Eagle spotting and other tours.
Take a drive up Mount Scott for some of the best views in the area.
Listen for barking of the Prairie Dogs, this is how they warn one another of people in the area, it is very interesting to hear and if you drive by the sites where you see their mounds, pull off and ro...

Windmill Hill Nature Preserve is 75 acres of land, set aside by the City of DeSoto and Dallas County as a nature preserve. Nestled in woods providing shade in the summer, there is a great hiking trail with gentle slopes and some very steep hills, which can provide a challenge at times. There is a bridge that crosses Ten Mile Creek, named in memory of the late Steven Ray Vaughan.

Wichita Mountains - Kite Trail Waterfalls
Here is a video from when I took the boys out to the Wichita Mountains to check out some water features along the Kite Trail and West Cache Creek. We hiked from Lost Lake to 40-foot hole and turned around to head back.
Fire out at the Wildlife Refuge Wichita Mountaina north of Lawton Ft Still OK !
This was the first day when the fire was burning out at the Wildlife Refuge in the Wichita Mountains Oklahoma. We drove out there that night, so the fire would show more on the pictures and video's. The next day, all the roads leading into the wildlife refuge were blocked off to the public. It was a really sad sight to see this beautiful place being consumed by the fire. But it has hardly rained in over a year and everything was just bone dry. We just had the fire out at Medicine Park Oklahoma about a month earlier. I have driven out there number of times since. It still shows the scars of the fire. But thank Hashem/God that the grass is showing green again. And i hope to see the trees in it's greenery too !

The fault scarp along the Meers Fault Zone is not very pronounced in the field because the fault is running through the poorly consolidated Permian Hennessey Shale. You can tell from the questions and head-turning that the participants are having a difficult time seeing the trace of the fault scarp. Charles Gilbert emphasizes that the trace can be observed quite easily with topographic maps and satellite images. The maximum offset associated with the most recent fault movement is about 3 to 5 meters vertically and 3 to 5 meters laterally (to the left)...an oblique slip. The north side of the fault has moved up. This movement is the reverse sense of motion relative to the movement in the Pennsylvanian Period.

This is the annual Oklahoma YouTuber meetup in the form of a double overnight camping trip that Kyle and I have been planning for a year. It finally took place and was a lot fun. We met a lot of wonderful people and had a BLAST!!! Thanks to everyone who came out and made this time out wonderful.
