Wicken Fen near Cambridge was the very first nature reserve owned by the National Trust and has been in our care since 1899. Find out how we plan to care for this rich oasis of wildlife, with more than 9,300 recorded as living in this unique and special landscape.
The Wicken Fen Vision is an ambitious plan to create a diverse landscape for wildlife and people stretching from Wicken Fen to the edge of Cambridge for the next 100 years.

Wicken Fen, the National Trust's oldest nature reserve, and England's most famous fen.
Wicken Fen provides a window on a 'lost landscape' - a unique remnant of un-drained fenland which once covered the vast lowlands of East Anglia.
Today Wicken Fen, is one of Europe's most important wetlands home to over 9000 recorded species including many rare species of plants, birds and dragonflies.
Throughout the year there's an amazing array of wildlife to see and hear, from booming bitterns and cuckoos in spring, rare orchids and dragonfly's in summer, to hen harriers and short-eared owls in winter.
At the heart of the reserve is the ancient Sedge Fen, which can easily be explored via the all weather Boardwalk trail.

Wicken Fen Walks was about 5.5 miles in distance. The terrain of the route was a combination of paths, tracks and short country road sections. The walking was easy on flat ground. Route finding was easy with obvious paths, good waymarking and good landmarks. There were no stiles to negotiate.

First crane chick arrives at Wicken Fen Nature Reserve
A common crane chick has hatched at Wicken Fen, Cambridgeshire for the first time since we acquired the nature reserve in 1899 and started species records.Two adult cranes tending to their chickWicken Fen crane breeding success
We think it could actually be the first chick to be born at the reserve in over 500 years!
What makes this breeding success all the more important is that the common crane is on the UK's amber conservation list and, despite what its name may suggest, is also one of Britain's rarest breeding birds with only around 54 pairs recorded in 2018.

Wicken Fen, near Ely
This Cambrigeshire fenland has been restored and is now maintained as a nature conservancy giving shelter to over 8000 species of plants, birds and insects, notably, dragonflies (pictured at the start of the video is a four-spotted chaser, or as I would call it, Libellula Quadrimaculata). You can do a short or long walk round and for a bit of peace and quiet, it's great!

Trip to Wicken Fen in Cambridgeshire. Glorious day! I love this place for its peace and calmness even though most of the wildlife is on a tea-break when I visit. I think this was filmed in about 2011 on my crummy old non-widescreen tape-based steam-powered camcorder.
