Fort Jefferson Memorial Cross - Drone Optic
Stunning aerial footage of the Fort Jefferson Memorial Cross overlooking the mighty Mississippi River in Wickliffe, KY.
Fly Safe • Fly Smart • Fly Smooth
The Fort Jefferson Memorial Cross is a 95-foot memorial that stands high upon a bluff at the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. The history of the cross begins in 1937 when a few members of a community choir erected a small wooden cross on a hill at the Ancient Buried City site (now known as Wickliffe Mounds Research Center) in Wickliffe. In 1951, the cross was enlarged and bulbs were lit during Easter and Christmas each year. When Murray State University purchased the Wickliffe Mounds site in 1981, it became necessary to seek another location for the cross. It was then that the idea was born to build a cross tall enough to be seen from the states of Missouri, Illinois and Kentucky and would be lit at night.
Exploring river town Columbus, Kentucky
Western Kentucky's oldest town, this small hamlet has seen its rise and fall throughout history. One could compare the volatility of the town's past with the wildly unpredictable Mississippi River, which plays a major role in the town's history. Today we explore a small portion of Columbus, around the river bank, a few back roads, but first, we check out the Iron Banks Lodge.

Ohio River Bridge Between Madison Indiana & Milton Kentucky (Milton-Madison Bridge)
Here is video footage of taken 12-18-2009 while I was driving across the Milton-Madison Bridge over the Ohio River. Government officials are currently planning to replace the existing bridge and build a new structure. The current bridge is highly deteriorated and is rated in poor condition.
Many motorists who drive across the bridge connecting Milton, Kentucky and Madison, Indiana could be temporarily ferried across the Ohio River in 2011.
Transportation officials in Kentucky and Indiana are proposing a ferry service that would operate during the scheduled replacement of the bridges superstructure.
Kentucky Department of Transportation spokesperson Andrea Clifford says if federal stimulus funds are secured as hoped, preliminary work on the project would begin in mid-2010.
But in early 2011 we would have to start removing the current superstructure, and at that time in order to help mitigate the impact, we would provide a free ferry service, she said.
We would run two ferries during the day, most of the day, and maybe one ferry during the overnight hours. Each ferry could accomodate up to about 24 cars, and it takes about 12 minutes to load, get across the river and unload. So during the peak hours we could carry about 240 cars an hour.

This two lane vehicular bridge is the Ohio River crossing for U.S. Route 421. It has a main span of 600 feet (180 m) and total length of 3,184.2 feet (970.5 m). It has a deck width of a mere 20 feet (6.1 m), and above the deck the vertical clearance is 16.8 feet (5.1 m). This bridge is the only vehicular crossing of the Ohio River for 26 miles (42 km) going upstream ( the Markland Bridge near Vevay, Indiana) and 46 miles (74 km) downstream (the John F. Kennedy Memorial Bridge in Louisville)

The Milton-Madison Bridge Project was launched in August 2008, with the goal of replacing or rehabilitating the US 421 bridge connecting Milton, Ky., and Madison, Ind. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is the lead agency in this bi-state effort with the Indiana Department of Transportation. Over the next three years, this comprehensive study will result in the selection of a bridge location, affordable bridge type options and an environmental report that meets federal requirements.
Inspections have found the existing Milton-Madison Bridge to be functionally obsolete -- too narrow to handle todays traffic. A 1995 bridge study attempted to address those issues, but ended early after a bridge inspection found deficiencies requiring immediate attention. Plans for a new bridge were put on hold, and a $10 million rehabilitation began, extending the life of the existing bridge 10 to 15 years.
The current project is intended to provide a long-term solution to the cross-river transportation needs of the two communities.
SPOT: Santa Fe Swing Span Bridge Over the Mississippi River
The Santa Fe Swing Span Bridge crosses the Mississippi River and it connects Fort Madison, Iowa, and Niota, Illinois. The bridge carries both vehicle and train traffic and it is one of longest double-deck swing-span bridges in the world. The Santa Fe Swing Span Bridge (which is also called the Fort Madison Bridge) is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
Indiana will save hundreds of millions on Ohio River bridge, could use money for other road work
Gov. Mitch Daniels said the state will save hundreds of millions of dollars on a new bridge over the Ohio River, and the money could help with efforts to finish the Interstate 69 extension.
Cairo Illinois 1888 Panoramic Bird's Eye View Map 7258
Panoramic Maps, also known as Bird's Eye View, aerial view, or perspective maps. These were a popular form of art at the turn of the 20th century depicting a city's key points of interest.
Unlike traditional maps, Panoramic maps often highlighted the commercial aspects of a town, while also clearly showing many local residences.
I've had a lot fun looking up places I've been to on these maps -- and I've gotta say - It's amazing just how much things change -- and also how much things stay the same.

Indian Burial Mound, Homer, Ohio
According to a local historian (who didn't want to be named in this video) mentioned there were four giant skeletons discovered in this small town. 2 seven footers, 1 eight footer, and 1 twelve footer.
Mound City Group, Chillicothe, Ohio
A few items to note...
1. In this supposed Hopewell civilization, the embankment walls were believed to be around 12 feet in height at one time.
2. As vast as it seems on the video, you get a far, FAR greater feeling of enormous space when you are there in person.
3. While I repeated myself in the video about Camp Sherman situation, it's interesting how many resources were used to restore the site.
4. After some research, there are times when I found out some of the skeletons were laid in a certain way in the mounds at most of the different sites. Some would be laid flat and their head would be facing to either the north or east. Still others were buried in a sitting position with their head, again, facing to either the north or east. What is interesting is there is speculation from the Interpretation Center that these people, buried in the sitting position, could have been drugged and buried alive for various reasons. It might have been for crimes committed. Another reason is when rulers were changed, their family, servants and/or those who were in leadership positions for the previous ruler also died or were killed. It's believed this type of behavior was somewhat normal.
5. There is an Adena burial site, called Story Mound, about 5 minutes driving distance away from this site... Things that make you go hmmm....
