In Japan there are two seasons in the year when it is customary to send gifts. In the summer the gifts are called O Chugen, gifts sent around new year are called O Seibo and are given as a token of gratitude on the part of the sender for services or kindness provided by the receiver.
6. Wide of melons
7. Close of grapes, 5,260 Yen per bunch (around $45 US Dollars)
8. Close of mangos 5,250 including tax for one Mango (around $44 US Dollars)
9. SOUNDBITE: (Japanese) Hosokawa Toshiaki, owner of Fruits Hosokawa
Apart from occasional imports mangos were not available in Japan until recently. People had of course eaten mangos while abroad which is probably part of the background of their current popularity. However, since they started to produce mangos domestically it has become possible to obtain delicious, high quality, ripe mangos which is one of the main reasons for the boom.

The value accorded to fruit in Japan is different to anywhere else in the world. To non Japanese prices I imagine that prices are unbelievable.
16. Close of two boxed mangoes woth 12,600 Yen (around $108 US Dollars) - these mangoes were grown on Miyakojima

20. SOUNDBITE: (Japanese) Tomori Kazuo. Civil servant & Mango producer.
Oranges and apples, fruit that have been traditionally available in Japan are produced in sufficient quantities that they are readily available to everyone. Mangos, however, are still relatively scarce which I think is one reason for their high retail cost.

25. SOUNDBITE: (Japanese) Tomori Kazuo.
I'm proud that the Mangos that I produce are highly valued, but it saddens me that because of the high cost my mangos will not reach and be eaten by many ordinary families.

LEAD IN:
The humble mango is a food delicacy in Japan.
Lovers of the fruit are often prepared to pay astronomical prices to get their hands on the golden produce.
STORYLINE:
People wishing to eat mangoes in Japan need to be prepared to pay high prices.
Despite not being an indigenous fruit to Japan, it has become very popular in recent years and is undergoing something of a boom.
The fruit is often sold in up-market department stores specialising in 'rare' gourmet treats.
Hosokawa Toshiaki is a fruit retailer in Kyoto's Takashimaya Department.
He says mangoes are often exchanged as a gift or a token of gratitude.
Mangoes in Hosokawa's store are sold for over 12,000 Yen (around $108 US Dollars) for a gift set containing two pieces of fruit.
Also available from his store are boxed bunches of grapes retailing at 5,260 Yen (around $45 US Dollars).
He says in recent years it has become possible to grow mangoes in Japan.

Powerful typhoon heads to Japan
A powerful typhoon is heading toward Japan's largest island, Honshu. Typhoon Tapah was moving northeast at a speed of 19 mph with winds up to 100 mph, according to Japan's meteorological agency.
Beer in Japan
The four major beer producers in Japan are Asahi, Kirin, Sapporo, and Suntory producing mainly pale-colored light lagers with an alcohol strength of around 5.0% ABV. Pilsner style lagers are the most commonly produced beer style in Japan, but beer-like beverages, made with lower levels of malts called happoshu or non-malt happōsei have captured a large part of the market, as tax is substantially lower on these products.
Microbreweries have also gained increasing popularity since deregulation in 1994, supplying distinct tasting beers in a variety of styles that seek to match the emphasis on craftsmanship, quality, and ingredient provenance often associated with Japanese food.

STORYLINE:
On October 15th 2013 the death toll from a 7.2-magnitude earthquake that struck the central Philippine island of Bohol and nearby Cebu province has risen to at least 93.
Bohol police said 77 of the deaths came from the province and at least 15 others died in nearby Cebu province and another on Siquijor Island.
Centuries-old stone churches crumbled in the quake and wide areas were without power.
In Cebu, the 16th-century Basilica of the Holy Child - among the country's oldest churches - lost its bell tower.
Cars were flattened by falling debris and soldiers were called in to clear the rubble and assist with recovery operations.
The densely populated Cebu city suffered extensive damage and several people died when a building in the port and the roof of a market area collapsed.
The quake struck at 8:12 a.m. (0012 a.m. GMT) and was centred about 33 kilometres (20 miles) below Carmen city, where many small buildings collapsed.
The quake set off two stampedes in nearby cities.
When it struck, people gathered in a gym in Cebu rushed outside in a panic, crushing five people to death and injuring eight others, said a provincial disaster management officer.
Cebu city's hospitals quickly moved patients into the streets, basketball courts and parks.
Many roads and bridges were reported damaged, making rescue operations difficult.
As night fell, the entire province was in the dark after the quake cut power supplies.
Windy weather and rain also forced back a military rescue helicopter.
President Benigno Aquino III said he would travel to Bohol and Cebu on Wednesday.
Regional military commander lieutenant general Roy Deveraturda said he recalled soldiers from holiday to respond to the quake.
***
A day after a 7.2 magnitude quake struck the central Philippines, killing at least 144 people, rescue workers were finally able to reach some of the region's hardest-hit areas.
