Rocky Mountain National Park | Hike Sky Pond | Camp Estes Park Colorado
Rocky Mountain National Park was the focus of this trip. We began our trip by driving from Little Rock, Arkansas to Boulder, Colorado. There we picked up food for the weekend at Trader Joe’s. Once done there we drove on to Mary’s Lake Campground in Estes Park, Colorado. The next morning we had a quick breakfast before heading to Rocky Mountain National Park. There we drove to hike at a trail that we have done once before, and really wanted to experience the amazing trial again. That trail is the Sky Pond Trail. It is such an amazing place. After we finished the Sky Pond Trial in Rocky Mountain National Park, we drove back to Mary’s Lake Campground in Estes Park. There we cleaned up before driving to Boulder, Colorado to hang out on Pearl Street. For dinner, we had an amazing meal at The Post Brewing. The next morning we cooked pancakes for breakfast. After that, we left for downtown Estes Park to do a little shopping. After a short time there, we drove back to Rocky Mountain National Park. We drove up the Old Fall River Road to the Alpine Visitor Center. We spent some time touring the area then left to drive the rest of Trail Ridge Road. We then left the park thinking we were going to explore some of the National Forest in the area. However, we ended up driving to the Wild Basin Entrance to the Rocky Mountain National Park. We were not aware that when we turned down this dirt road that it would be another area of the National Park that is not as well known. We found a great place on the St. Vrain Creek to put up some hammocks and relax. We left there to go back to Mary’s Lake Campground to cook dinner. The next morning packed up camp, and drove to Boulder, Colorado where we had breakfast at Tangerine.

In my first video of 2020, I scout out the Wild Basin area of Rocky Mountain National Park. While the photography was sparse, this hike was a good scouting expedition and gave me the opportunity to give everyone an update on where my photography business stands.

Ouzel Falls - Rocky Mountain National Park - Calypso Cascades, Wild Basin Trails!!
An excellent trip into the Rocky Mountains on the Basin Trails. The trailhead lies about an hour and a half from Denver, Colorado up in the Rocky Mountains - where cell phone reception fails to exist.
The Basin trails offer a fabulous venture into the wild Rockies, with high mountain trails, raging rivers and plenty of waterfalls and rapids to quench a hiker's thirst for nature's scenery.
After hitting the trail, we take some time at Copeland Falls, the least impressive of the three we'd see on this hike, but still a relaxing and natural delight.
Further up the trail we hang out at the Calypso Cascades, a layered waterfall that captures your eye over and over, before heading up higher into the mountains to Ouzel Falls - a raging faucet that sprays the area with mist, and tempts you to climb closer and closer.
A fantastic afternoon was spent in Rocky Mountain National park.
The trail was only moderate in difficulty, but with the daylight growing short, I took it a little faster than I would have ordinarily - although you wouldn't know that from the 'chilling out' I do in the video. I thought I would have been one of the last hikers of the evening, but sure enough quite a few were heading up after me. No chance they got back down by dark.
Good for them.

Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) - Wild Basin, Copeland Falls, Calypso Cascades, and Ouzel Falls - Day 5 of 5. This is our last day in RMNP and second to last stop before at Lily Lake. This is probably my second favorite hike in RMNP because of all the water features including St. Vrain Creek, Copeland Falls, Calypso Cascades, and Ouzel Falls. This was recorded on June 1st 2018.

The hike to Ouzel Falls begins from the fairly remote Wild Basin Trail head in the southeastern corner of Rocky Mountain National Park, located near the small communities of Meeker Park and Allenspark. To reach the trail head from Estes Park, drive 12.6 miles south on Colorado Highway 7 to the Wild Basin Road junction and turn right. After driving 0.4 miles make another right turn into the park. The Wild Basin Trail head is located roughly 2.2 miles from the park turn-off on a narrow, two-wheel drive gravel road.
This hike offers several attractions along the way, including Copeland Falls and Calypso Cascades. Lower Copeland Falls, your first destination along this route, arrives at just over three-tenths of a mile from the trail head. The upper falls are located roughly one-tenth of a mile further upstream along the North St. Vrain Creek. There's a side trail that visits both the lower and upper falls. This trail parallels the main trail, and once you've visited Upper Copeland Falls, will allow you to return back to the main trail without having to backtrack.
Beyond the falls the trail crosses over Sandbeach Creek. At just over 1.3 miles from the trailhead you'll reach a spur trail that provides access to a series of five backcountry campgrounds that offer a total of seven individual campsites. To continue on towards Calypso Cascades, hikers should stay to the left at this junction.
At roughly 1.6 miles hikers will pass an unnamed waterfall, which shouldn't be confused with Calypso Cascades, which is still another two-tenths of a mile further up the trail. Unfortunately the 200-foot high Calypso Cascades weren't all that impressive during our first visit to these falls on an early-September day. However, during the spring run-off, the falls are usually roaring, as seen in this photo from a more recent hike in late June (below, on the left).
Above Calypso Cascades you'll begin to catch sporadic views of the surrounding mountains, including Longs Peak and Mt. Meeker towards the north.
At 2.7 miles hikers will reach Ouzel Falls, which is a very impressive 40-foot waterfall. Although you can see it from the new footbridge that now spans across Ouzel Creek, you can get a much better view by traveling off trail for a short distance.

Ouzel Falls, Ouzel Creek and Ouzel Lake (2.25 miles further up the trail) are all named after the water ouzel. These small, slate-grey colored birds, also known as American dippers, are known for bobbing, or dipping, along the rocks around fast moving streams, and diving under water in search of food. Once below the surface of the water the dippers forage by either walking along the stream bottom, or by flying through the water, using their wings to propel themselves through the swift currents.

Stop 1 - #bierstadtlake
Bierstadt Lake is about a 4 mile round-trip hike, about 1 mile and a half to the lake itself then a 1 mile loop around it. There are 2 separate trail to get to Bierstadt Lake, and both trails are excellent ways to achieve the goal: a morning exploring one of the most stunning lakes in Rocky Mountain National Park: Bierstadt Lake. Bierstadt Lake now holds a special place in our hearts, because it was the location where Zach saw his first moose!
Stop 2 - #spraguelake
Sprague Lake is more of a lakeside walk than a hike, but it is a MUST on any trip to Rocky Mountain National Park. Sprague Lake is located very close to both Bierstadt Lake trailheads, so it makes sense to do in succession with that hike. The walk around the lake itself is easy, and let's just say that old saying 'All good things take time' was not written by someone who had been to Sprague Lake.
Stop 3 - #dreamlake
Dream Lake is located on the hike to Emerald Lake, at just about the halfway point. FYI, there is a lake called Nymph Lake on the route as well, but this one is much less noteworthy than the larger two. Dream Lake is the most beautiful lake we saw in Rocky Mountain National Park. It was incredible.
Stop 4 - #emeraldlake
Now, Emerald Lake MIGHT be prettier than dream lake in the heat of the summer. This 'Dream Lake was the prettiest lake we saw' business might be considered cheating, because a few lakes we hiked to were still frozen over. Emerald Lake was one of those lakes. Now, this lake was STILL beautiful, even covered in ice!
Stop 5 - #bearlake
Whatever you do, you MUST make a stop at Bear Lake. It'll be the easiest stop on the adventure, except for maybe Sprague Lake, and you will thank yourself for making the trip. Like most lakes in Rocky Mountain National Park, the best part of the view!
Stop 6 - #albertafalls
Located a little over a mile from Bear Lake, ALberta Falls is nuique from ANY OTHER of the hikes on our 4 day adventure hiking the Rockies. How so? Well, it is the only waterfall on the adventure!
Stop 7 - #morainepark
Moraine Park is FREAKING HUGE! There is no way to see it all in one day, unless that is the only thing you do that day. It is enormous AND spectacular, and we saw 57 elk there!
Stop 8 - #fernlake
Fern Lake itself is 3.8 miles from the Fern Lake trailhead, but you can take it as fast or slow as you care to. And even better? Along the way is Fern Falls, a cascasing waterfalls flowing almost as powerfully as Alberta Falls.
Stop 9 - #cublake
We ourselves did not spot any moose here at Cub Lake, however we heard from at least 4 or 5 people who went to Cub Lake on previous days who did see a moose hanging out. We must have went on the day that moose was intermittent fasting or something, because we didn't find them. However, that shouldn't take away from Cub Lake itself, because the lake was incredible. It was the bluest lake we saw without a doubt!

We first found out each other had a passion for travel when we started dating, and set off on our first trip together to sunny San Diego after only dating for a few short weeks! You really learn who someone is when you travel with them... Everything started off great with a delayed flight and lost baggage (the only reason Zach has broken Julie’s terrible overpacking habits and convinced her to become a backpacker gal) but we bonded the rest of the time over sunsets, bike rides, seafood and strong coffee. We were quickly hooked to the feeling of exploring a new place and found ourselves planning our next trip before returning home from the last.
Starting in January 2019, we purchased a 2001 Volkswagen Eurovan MV and are making the road our home! We spent 2 months converting our van (Winnie) into our home, with a TON of help from YouTube tutorials, and of course some help from Zach's handyman pops. Now every day is a new adventure!
The New Alluvial Fan 2013. Rocky Mountain National Park.
As a result of the Colorado Flood of 2013, the Alluvial Fan on the Endovalley road in RMNP has been completely redesigned and Roaring River basin relocated. The road is out. If not for the 1982 earthen dam failure at Lawn Lake, the devastation to this area and the Town of Estes Park may have been considerably more destructive. The Flood of 2013 was the size of Connecticut. Estes Park received 11 inches of rain .. Boulder received 16 inches. The soundtrack was composed and performed by me.
