Gay Austin - Enhancing Resilience of Wet Meadows in the Gunnison Basin, CO
The Gunnison Climate Working Group, a collaboration of public and private partners working to reduce the adverse effects of climate change in the Gunnison Basin, recently completed a two-year pilot restoration project to enhance the resilience of wet meadows and riparian areas within sagebrush shrublands. These areas provide critical brood-rearing habitat for Gunnison sage-grouse (Centrocercus minimus), proposed for listing as endangered under the Endangered Species Act. Riparian areas and wetlands are also important for numerous other species, including neo-tropical migratory birds, elk and mule deer. Already compromised by erosion and lower water tables, these areas are likely to be further altered by drought and invasive species, intense rainstorms and/or shifting of habitat to higher elevations associated with climate change and plant community alterations (The Nature Conservancy et al. 2011).
To address these challenges, we used innovative, yet simple, restoration methods — small rock structures — to raise the water table to support plants and insects needed by wildlife and drown invasive weeds such as musk thistle. Restoration expert Bill Zeedyk designed the treatments (Zeedyk 2009). Youth field crews, agency partners, ranchers and volunteers constructed over 240 structures along approximately 10 stream miles at four sites on Bureau of Land Management, US Forest Service, and private lands. Preliminary monitoring data shows response to the structures is promising; they are starting to capture sediments and hold/spread water, enabling riparian and wetland plants to colonize. This project is part of a larger effort by the partnership that is working across jurisdictional boundaries to understand the effects of climate change on nature and people, develop social/ecological adaptation strategies, and promote coordinated action.

ROAD TRIP USA VLOG 26 Wild Bison, a flat tire and the Grand Canyon
(English translation under this text)
We discover that we have a flat tire, but in our rental car we don’t find the necessary tools to exchange the wheel. Luckily we can borrow a compressor and we can head to the Grand Canyon. We have an encounter with wild bison and enjoy the majestic views. After a lot of telephones with the rental company and the Road Side Assistance (where we have an insurance), we are forced to head to Canab, where the rental company wants to trade in our car for an other.

Art of the Hunt
Wyoming-based folklorist Andrea Graham discussed her fieldwork among fishers and hunters in the contemporary American West and explores how these traditions maintain, reinforce, and celebrate deeply-rooted elements of place, family and community life. The folklore and traditions surrounding hunting and fishing are among the most ancient expressions of traditional culture in contemporary America. Although hunting and fishing are not usually seen as artistic pursuits, a closer examination of the handmade tools and gear used, the skills of guides and outfitters, the decorative crafts involved and the hunting and fishing stories told among hunters reveal an enormous depth of creativity, beauty and tradition. These traditions remain strong, especially in the American West.

What a Coyote Den Looks Like.
This Coyote Den was in a ravine in the woods, only 100 yards from my livestock fence. This den has 6 entry and exit holes with 50 feet or tunnels between one side and another.
The only reason that coyotes dig dens is when they are about to have pups. The coyotes rear their young for about 6 weeks and then the whole family moves out and the adults teach the young how to hunt...usually on easy prey like livestock.
Coyotes are dangerous to livestock. Aside from killing chickens, ducks and rabbits, coyotes will take down sheep and goats and many times will eat their organs while they are still alive.
Needless to say, these coyotes need to go.

SUMMARY
=======
The mustang is a free-roaming horse of the American west that first descended from horses brought to the Americas by the Spanish. Mustangs are often referred to as wild horses, but because they are descended from once-domesticated horses, they are properly defined as feral horses. The original mustangs were Colonial Spanish horses, but many other breeds and types of horses contributed to the modern mustang, resulting in varying phenotypes. Most contain a greater genetic mixture of ranch stock and more recent breed releases, while a few are relatively unchanged from the original Iberian stock, most strongly represented in the most isolated populations.
In 1971, the United States Congress recognized that wild free-roaming horses and burros are living symbols of the historic and pioneer spirit of the West, which continue to contribute to the diversity of life forms within the Nation and enrich the lives of the American people. The free-roaming mustang population is managed and protected by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Controversy surrounds the sharing of land and resources by the free-ranging mustangs with the livestock of the ranching industry, and also with the methods with which the federal government manages the wild population numbers. The most common method of population management used is rounding up excess population then offering them to adoption by private individuals. There are inadequate numbers of adopters, so many animals now live in temporary and long-term holding areas with concerns that the animals may be sold for horse meat. Additional debate centers on the question of whether mustangs—and horses in general—are a native species or an introduced invasive species.

Auburn Coach Wife Kristi Malzahn Agrees with Match & eHarmony: Men are Jerks
My advice is this: Settle! That's right. Don't worry about passion or intense connection. Don't nix a guy based on his annoying habit of yelling Bravo! in movie theaters. Overlook his halitosis or abysmal sense of aesthetics. Because if you want to have the infrastructure in place to have a family, settling is the way to go. Based on my observations, in fact, settling will probably make you happier in the long run, since many of those who marry with great expectations become more disillusioned with each passing year. (It's hard to maintain that level of zing when the conversation morphs into discussions about who's changing the diapers or balancing the checkbook.)
Obviously, I wasn't always an advocate of settling. In fact, it took not settling to make me realize that settling is the better option, and even though settling is a rampant phenomenon, talking about it in a positive light makes people profoundly uncomfortable. Whenever I make the case for settling, people look at me with creased brows of disapproval or frowns of disappointment, the way a child might look at an older sibling who just informed her that Jerry's Kids aren't going to walk, even if you send them money. It's not only politically incorrect to get behind settling, it's downright un-American. Our culture tells us to keep our eyes on the prize (while our mothers, who know better, tell us not to be so picky), and the theme of holding out for true love (whatever that is—look at the divorce rate) permeates our collective mentality.
Even situation comedies, starting in the 1970s with The Mary Tyler Moore Show and going all the way to Friends, feature endearing single women in the dating trenches, and there's supposed to be something romantic and even heroic about their search for true love. Of course, the crucial difference is that, whereas the earlier series begins after Mary has been jilted by her fiancé, the more modern-day Friends opens as Rachel Green leaves her nice-guy orthodontist fiancé at the altar simply because she isn't feeling it. But either way, in episode after episode, as both women continue to be unlucky in love, settling starts to look pretty darn appealing. Mary is supposed to be contentedly independent and fulfilled by her newsroom family, but in fact her life seems lonely. Are we to assume that at the end of the series, Mary, by then in her late 30s, found her soul mate after the lights in the newsroom went out and her work family was disbanded? If her experience was anything like mine or that of my single friends, it's unlikely.
And while Rachel and her supposed soul mate, Ross, finally get together (for the umpteenth time) in the finale of Friends, do we feel confident that she'll be happier with Ross than she would have been had she settled down with Barry, the orthodontist, 10 years earlier? She and Ross have passion but have never had long-term stability, and the fireworks she experiences with him but not with Barry might actually turn out to be a liability, given how many times their relationship has already gone up in flames. It's equally questionable whether Sex and the City's Carrie Bradshaw, who cheated on her kindhearted and generous boyfriend, Aidan, only to end up with the more exciting but self-absorbed Mr. Big, will be better off in the framework of marriage and family. (Some time after the breakup, when Carrie ran into Aidan on the street, he was carrying his infant in a Baby Björn. Can anyone imagine Mr. Big walking around with a Björn?)
