12 Fruit Trees that Thrive in the Desert with Little Care
John from takes you on a field trip to Phoenix, Arizona to the home of Jake Mace where you will learn the top 12 fruit trees that can thrive in the desert with little care.
In this episode, you will discover the garden of eating that Jake Mace has created at his standard residential tract home in Phoenix, Arizona. You will get a tour of his edible food forest garden and learn about the 12 most important desert adapted fruit trees you can grow.
Besides some of the most desert acclimated fruit trees, you will learn about some of the more tropical fruits that Jake is growing in the form of extra credit.
You will also discover a few of the most important practices you must do to ensure your success growing fruit trees in the desert or other hot, dry, arid climate zone.
Finally at the end of this episode, John will interview Jake about some of these desert adapted fruit trees as well as talk about some good vegetables to grow in the heat. You will also learn about water and water conservation and how you can save more water growing your own food and eating lower on the food chain.
After watching this episode, you will have a better understanding of the best fruit trees to grow in the desert and how to make changes in your life to leave a lesser foot print on the planet.

Sycamore Canyon Wilderness 4x4 Tour
Complete details about this trail and others can be found at
Sycamore Canyon Wilderness northwest of Sedona, Arizona is one of the most breathtaking regions in the southwestern United States. It's a protected region where you can only hike but there are numerous points where 4x4's can access right up to the boundary for incredible vistas or ancient cliff dwellings.
Todd and I were leading a group from meetup.com and we had quite the variety of vehicles for this easy route. We met up north of Phoenix and caravaned to the Gold King Mine in Jerome, where we aired down for 68 miles of dirt. After the very dusty road through Perkinsville, we headed up the freshly grated trail leading to the old cabin and eventually the cliff dwellings.
Todd and I had run the trail two weeks prior and it was an actual 4x4 trail, but this time it had been completely grated for 2wd. Not sure how I feel about that one. Anyway, it sure saved us a bunch of time going out and back.
We stopped for lunch at the old Railroad Draw cabin and then headed over to hike into the wilderness to the dwellings. The hike is a quick 400 vertical feet and on the backside of the ridge overlooking Sycamore Canyon. Believe me, it's well worth the hike but it does require a little bit of rock scrambling to reach the dwellings.
With the trail improvement?, we were able to take our time working our way up to the tall pines of Kaibab National Forest. As planned we landed early at my marked group site. Everyone picked a spot under the trees and had dinner before joining the group around the campfire.
We hit the trail at 8am on Sunday for another long day on the dirt. Our first stop was a little lake before heading out to the amazing Sycamore Point. You have to go see this place, it's amazing. And just like everywhere else so far, we had the place to ourselves.
Heading back out to one more point of interest along Sycamore Canyon. The start of the canyon is just as amazing as the others plus there were some rock climbers hanging off the cliffs as we were walking around. It's a really short walk down to the giant waterfall (usually dry). The last stop on our canyon tour was the vertigo-inducing Volunteer Canyon. It literally just drops off into what seems like forever.
We had been right on schedule all weekend and it continued to allow us to take our time for the last several miles of pines that dropped us right out along Highway 17, just south of Flagstaff.
I would like to thank all the attendees who came out for a weekend adventure to remember. Also special thanks to Todd for the support and taking up the very dusty back of the group.
Thank you for checking us out.

Arizona and New Mexico
Two bordering states in these United States. Both are in the heart of the American Southwest.
Both are about the same size...New Mexico is just slightly bigger. However, Arizona has more than three times as many people, and it’s growing at a higher rate. In fact, Arizona is one of the fastest growing states in the country, while New Mexico is definitely not.
A big reason why is Phoenix, which is the fifth biggest city in the country. Phoenix attracts all the concerts, all the professional sports teams, all the best comedians, and all the best indie films in theaters that people think they’re cool for seeing.
Arizona also has Tucson, which has a larger metropolitan population than New Mexico’s biggest city, Alburquerque. Still, it has an amazing balloon festival called the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. Plus Albuquerque is a way cooler name for a city. I just love saying it.
Both states are known for their deserts, for both are two of the driest states in the country. However, both have these little areas that get higher rainfall due to having a higher elevation.
Due to these elevation differences, both do have some climate variation. I mean, Arizona has the high plateau in the northeast part of the state, the mountainous region that runs from the northwest to southeast, and the low ranges and desert valleys down in the southwestern part. Its biggest desert is the Sonoran. The Chihuahuan Desert is the big one in New Mexico, and it even creeps into Arizona. New Mexico also has the Rocky Mountains in the north, the Great Plains in the east, and basically high plateau throughout the rest of the state. Where the elevation is high, they also tend to get four seasons. Otherwise, folks have been moving to both states for decades due to their mild winters and generally beautiful weather. Or at least snowbirds just head down there for the winter.

In this Jalisco Mexico vlog, we stayed in the Pueblo Magico, Tapalpa for a little less than a week. This provincial mountain town is truly something special. While in this Magic Town, we enjoyed the mouth-watering food of the mountains of Jalisco while soaking in the relaxing essence of nature surrounding the town.
So many people recommended we visit Tapalpa, Jalisco and now we know why! We just wish we’d come sooner! During our trip, we also made our way to Valle de Piedrotas, or Valley of Large Stones, what is considered the main attraction of Tapalpa. Later, we journey through some sketchy dirt roads to find what we later learned was the largest waterfall either of us have ever seen, and perhaps the most stunning thing we’ve ever seen in nature. This Mexican waterfall, called Salto de Nogal is an absolute MUST SEE if you are in Guadalajara or Lake Chapala Jalisco, Mexico. Heck, even if you aren’t in Jalisco or Mexico, we think this experience was practically unparalleled and a definite must.
What do you think of our adventures in this travel Mexico vlog? We'd love to hear from you in the comments! Where should our Tangerine Travels take us next?
These are our recommendations on what to see / do / eat / stay in Tapalpa, Mexico.
WHAT TO SEE / DO IN TAPALPA
1. Valle de Piedrotas (spectacular views and impressively large stones)
2. Salto de Nogal (two jaw-dropping waterfalls)
3. El Centro de Tapalpa (the center of town with lots to see, do, and eat)
4. The shops (poke around the shops of Tapalpa for some traditional wooden products, rompope, ponche, coffee, woven clothing, and other unique goodies to Jalisco)
5. Give some love to the many gentle and kind stray dogs.
WHERE TO EAT IN TAPALPA
1. La Villa Tapalpa (the best food & drinks we tasted in Tapalpa!)
2. Madre Tierra Tapalpa (TIED for the best food we tasted in Tapalpa!)
3. Paulinos (the cheapest breakfast in Tapalpa)
4. Dulceria El Checo (the best espresso in Tapalpa)
WHERE TO STAY IN TAPALPA
1. We enjoyed the Tapalpa Airbnb we found in town, a cabin-style hotel called La Huerta. This is the link to rent it:

A few months ago we went to visit the incredible abandoned city called Slab City. It used to be a military base but hundreds of squatters came and made it their home. We went with our friend Justin Escalona and truly had a fascinating experience. We thought the place would be hostile and dangerous when in fact it was inviting and beautiful (in it's own way). Is This Paradise!? Usal Beach in Sinkyone State Park
I wake up to a beautiful morning on Usal Beach along the Lost Coast of California. This is the southernmost part of Sinkyone State Park. Of course, it has to fog up very quickly, but I still go for a short hike into the redwoods. Thankfully, the sun comes out just in time for a magnificent sunset.
This place is a little bit magical. There are deer, elk, foxes, sea lions and birds in abundance. If you just sit still long enough, the local critters come out to play.
I actually lost my action camera on the final day here. It must have fallen off the front seat of my car while I was packing up. It really bummed me out because I had a couple of timelapses on there along with a bunch of footage down the famously rough Usal Road. There were times I didn't think I would make it while driving that road but was afraid to turn back. Maybe I'll post the little footage I still have from my other camera sometime.

He then called the snake removal service to take them out.
A Deer Migration You Have to See to Believe | National Geographic
Researchers have only recently found the longest large mammal migration in the continental United States: Mule deer migrate 150 miles (241 kilometers) in western Wyoming each year. And it's no easy task for them—barriers include highways, fences, tough terrain, and bodies of water. In this video by Joe Riis, a National Geographic grantee and regular contributor, see the modern-day obstacles mule deer overcome to make the migratory trek that they likely have been making for generations.

Tonto National Forest 4x4 Adventure
Complete details about this trail and others can be found at
We didn't give much notice to our website followers for this run on April 13, 2019, to be honest we really didn't even have a set plan until the evening before. It's not like we were going in blind or unprepared, we just didn't do a thorough scouting of the points we would be stopping at. You know, keeping it a mystery and all. As it turned out, we found a ton a great stuff and saw way more wildlife than we ever thought.
We met early in Globe, headed up to Young Hwy to air down at A-Cross road. From there it was A-Cross to eventually work our way up FR 895 to Thompson Mesa. The trail was pretty easy and doable by stock 4x4's. There was a full-size Ford F150 with us who didn't seem to struggle but it definitely went home with a bunch more pinstripes. I believe he might have had to use the rear locker at a couple loose and steep climbs. The sharp rocks are what will get you. You should have durable all-terrain tires at minimum.
We stopped at the old Spanish fort or Native American ruins, still not sure which it is. Then we headed up the rim even further to the old Boyer Homestead. On the way up the trail was lined with wild flowers and even a herd of deer were spotted running across the high meadows. After having lunch at the cabin we headed back down to the river and up Poison Spring trail. The views above Roosevelt Lake and the numerous canyons that line this route make for a truly scenic day. Just a nice easy cruise with views for miles.
After the group broke off we decided to take the scenic route home through Apache Trail. We drive this route almost twice a month but we never take it for granted, always keeping an eye out for anything. This time it was just before Tortilla Flats where we saw a young herd of big horn sheep. There was three young one following pops all over the rocks. We hung out there until the sun started to fade, ending another incredible day of exploring in the desert.
As always thank you for watching and sharing with your friends.

Cave Springs Trail, Mount Nutt Wilderness Area
Me and my friend James hiked the Cave Springs Trail in the Mount Nutt Wilderness area. Pictures and video taken on my cell phone sorry for the quality. I don't own a GoPro yet.
Music by Nahko - Warrior People
Cave Spring Trail climbs onto the east slope of the Black Mountains for about 0.8 miles and ends at Cave Spring. The route is steep in places. Cave Spring, as its name implies, is located within a natural cave that provides water for wildlife and wild burros that inhabit the area. To gain access to the cave you will need to duck beneath hackberry trees that guard the entrance. Looking east from the cave entrance treats you to a nice view of the surrounding Sacramento Valley and the Hualapai and Cerbat Mountains beyond. Use of the trail is most comfortable between the months of September and May, although early-morning hiking during the summer can be pleasant as well.
To get to Cave Spring Trail from Kingman, follow Highway 93 north to Highway 68. Turn west onto Highway 68 and follow it approximately 9 miles to Estrella Road. Head south on Estrella Road for 4.7 miles to Shinarump Road. Turn right onto Shinarump Road and proceed 2.0 miles to Guthrie Road. Turn right on Guthrie Road and park at the small rock-lined parking area on your left.
No permits or fees are required. Camping is not permitted at the trailhead, but is fine anywhere else along the trail. Since this trail is located within wilderness, motor vehicles and mountain bikes are prohibited on the trail. Shade and drinking water are not available along the route.
IF YOU PACK IT IN PACK IT OUT - DO NOT LEAVE THIS PLACE TRASHED PLEASE
