Outer Banks Wild Horses - Corolla, NC Official Visitor Information
I'm a tour guide here for Jay Bender and Corolla Outback Adventures. Somebody needs a tour guide because they need to be shown in person just how amazing the northern Outer Banks are here in Currituck County. Between the wild horses roaming freely, the local history and ecological information, someone needs to brought out here personally and given first-hand knowledge and experience of the area. And, of course, to be driven off-road, which is all where our tours are, is all off-road. The pavement ends, we're driving on the sand, and you definitely need that first-hand experience so you don't get stuck certainly.
It's always something new, always a different adventure, whether it's the horses doing something cool or interesting, or just something crazy happening on the beach...dolphins jumping out of the surf. It's always new and exciting up here on the beach.
Driving off-road, it's all about the open air, safari-style, you know, the kids get bounced around a little bit. You get in and out of the truck, the beautiful scenery. It'd be hard not to enjoy driving up and down the beach for a couple hours.
Some of the common questions are mainly geared towards the horses, if they're similar to the same group we have up on the Eastern shore of Virginia, Chincoteague and Assateague. People ask how often the horses, you know, go down and stand on the beach, the ocean...of coursea, the money shot that folks want. They ask if I can cue that up for them sometimes...obviously that's a joke (laughing), but basically just geared around the horses and what they're gonna do. Of course all the area, the different names of the towns and the history behind all that. And all the cool things I've seen growing up out here, and just everything fun.

Walking with the Wild Horses of Corolla, North Carolina, Outer Banks
More than 100 wild horses in the Corolla herd reside on a 7,500-acre sanctuary in the Currituck National Wildlife Refuge. During the summer months the Outer Banks and the wild horses draw between 50,000 and 60,000 visitors each week. Local laws protect the animals from harassment and prohibit visitors from feeding the animals. They roam free and are often seen at the beach.

Wild Horses on the Outer Banks, NC
WILD HORSES -- Corolla has a population of honest-to-god real wild horses that live in the Currituck National Wildlife Refuge -- and yes, you can easily get to see them cavorting on the beach -- and visitors are welcome, but must stay at least 50 ft away - they want to keep them wild - they're descended from horses brought over by the Spanish - get a tour at corollawildhorsetours.com -- Bob's does a great job!
Wild Horses in the Outer Banks!! ~ A Day in Corolla, NC
We found the wild horses that live in Corolla, NC in the Outer Banks! Spent the day down there and ate at North Banks Restaurant and Raw Bar. Then we went to Kitty Hawk to see where the Wright brothers took their first flight. On to Sanctuary Vineyards and then headed home. Such a fun day with two of my favorite people!

Outer Banks Corolla Wild Horses - How Did They Get Here?
With Karen McCalpin, Executive Director of the Corolla Wild Horse Fund
A lot of the questions that visitors come down and ask are about the wild horses, which is one of the area's top attractions. And they ask, 'How did they originally get here?'.
There are three schools of thought about their arrival, the most documented one is being put ashore in 1528 down in what is now Cape Lookout National Seashore. It was Cape Fear then. Ships have run aground on sandbars, they had to lighten the load so the heavy things went overboard, and one of the most heavy things on the ship were horses, and they were also the most expendable. So the horses went overboard and were able to swim ashore in the shallow water, and National Geographic documented 5,000 wild horses on the Outer Banks by 1926.
Another thing is, I know up north (in Virginia) they're ponies and they're horses here, Assateague and Chincoteague. What's the difference and how do they relate to each other at all?
Well at one point in time, all of the horses on the East Coast were Spanish horses. But depending on who settled the area, for example Virginia was settled by primarily the English, so when they came they brought Shetland ponies and Welsh ponies and Connemara ponies and crossed them with the Spanish horses that they found. And then over the centuries, because it's a farming community, they brought in a lot of other domestic breeds, so now you have whatever exists as the cute Chincoteague pony, but it's a pony. Our horses (in Corolla) are genetically horses. They're small horses, and might be pony sized, some of them, but they are horses. And because of their isolation here on the Outer Banks, they've been DNA tested twice and remain pure.
And you also do horse tours here as well, through the Corolla Wild Horse Fund, correct?
We do. Our emphasis is a little different, it's on education and we take only small groups. Our purpose is to connect people with our mission and let them know why it's so important to protect and preserve this national treasure. Because it doesn't matter what state you're from, these are nobody's horses but they're everybody's horses.

Off Roading on OBX HWY 12 North to see Carova Wild Horses
Em and the Gang go off-roading on the NC Outer Banks (OBX) over Spring Break. We went with friends along hwy 12 North to try to visit the Carova Volunteer Fire Department and see if we could find the wild horses that live on the island. We had a great time on the 4x4 section of the beach. See if we get stuck! Check out the wild horses fight while we watched!
