Wild Side Specialty Tours with Hawaii Islander
On my latest visit to #Oahu I had to see why Wild Side Specialty Tours (sailhawaii.com) has been on the top of Trip Advisor’s list of things to do on the island. The company is owned and run by Tori Cullens a marine biologist and gracious yacht hostess, and the day we went out Elizabeth Hartford was the crew. Elizabeth made sure we were all safe and in the right places to see the dolphins. They are very concerned with the dolphins' well being -which is why I took the time to make this video about Fred! Highly recommend the experience. Check out my full blog post...on HawaiiLocalGetaways.com
Eyes of a Teen: A Wild Dolphin experience
Wild Spinner Dolphins living off of the Waianae Coast of Oahu, allowed a glimpse into their sleepy world, as Moanalua High School Ocean Club members came to experience wild dolphins for the first time. Their stunned silence and expressions will captivate and delight. Wild Side Specialty Tours were our hosts and local boat staff were professional, educational and fun.We finished the day at the Sunken lava tubes off of Makaha beach, where Honu (Hawai'ian green sea turtle) cleaning stations are located. (A cleaning station is a location where aquatic life congregate to be cleaned by smaller creatures,)
The geological formations and ocean life both above and underwater made for a trip to remember.
Most of the local teens, who live on island, had only experienced a captive dolphin setting at entertainment parks.

Snorkeling with Dolphins on the Waianae Coast
Clips from snorkeling with spinner dolphins as part of Wild Side Hawaii's Best of the West Side tour in September 2014. With only 6 passengers aboard they did an awesome job of plotting strategic intercepts of this pod of spinner dolphins so that we got in the water with them 5 times.

Swimming with Dolphins and Turtles in Oahu (Hawaii)
If you want to to swim with dolphins and turtles in Oahu the west coast is one of the best places in the world to do so.. Set on the leeward side of the island the water remains transparent most of the year, and it is here that dolphins choose to live most of the year and whales give birth.
In this tour I joined Wild Side Specialty Adventures ( on a dolphin and turtle swim off the beautiful coast of Hawaii. Leaving early in the morning from Waianae on the west coast of Oahu we headed out into the ocean and about 45 minutes later we spotted the first pod which followed us for a while.
After swimming with the dolphins the tour continued towards a rock known to be a place where turtles come to be cleaned by other fish. A great experience!

The Original Glider Rides on the North Shore of Oahu
The view from a bubble-topped sailplane is out of this world. High above Oahu's famous North Shore, average visibility is 30-40 miles. Take a ride with one of our million-mile pilots, and watch the breathtaking beauty of the island unfold below. It's an experience you'll want to share.
We are Hawaii's oldest and largest soaring operation, having been at Dillingham Airfield 'Since 1970'. What a wonderful way to see the island, in our sleek high-performance aircraft, soaring the skies over northwest Oahu. Panoramic vistas unfold as your pilot guides you in this bubble-topped aircraft; on the wings of the wind with sights and sensations never experienced before. It's thrilling, it's serene; and it's HAWAII !
A definite highlight of any trip to Oahu's picturesque North Shore.
Your piloted Scenic glider Tour will start with flight along the lush Waianae Mountains with rugged cliffs, cattle and horse trails; panoramic views of Oahu's world famous North Shore including Waimea Bay; a glimpse of the Satellite Tracking Station at Kaena Point, and colorful windsurfing sails off the beach at Mokuleia. Depending on the length-of-ride and weather conditions, you can see all of the North Shore and most of the interior of the island including Pearl Harbor, Diamond Head and Honolulu to the South. A 20-minute flight can attain altitudes of 3,000 feet or more, and longer flights are available. Mother Nature sometimes has a say in where we can fly and how high we can get (because of cloud-cover and wind-conditions), but rides of up-to-an-hour are available. Seating is cozy, so we suggest that you initially make your plans for flights of 30 minutes or less; and then if conditions are favorable, decide on additional TIME-options when you arrive for your flight. (Maximum combined weight for 2-passengers is 350-pounds)
We offer specialized Add-on flight activities, too. Just in case some VARIETY and EXTRA-EXCITEMENT is appealing:
Aerobatic loop-d-loop Ride : You can spice up your scenic tour and include
7 - 10 minutes of aerial aerobatics. Complete with parachutes, you climb into the cockpit alongside an experienced aerobatic pilot and take a look at the world from a whole new perspective, up-side down ! You call the shots, mild or wild * and decide how many aerobatic maneuvers and what kind of ride you want . *available for single-passenger riders only; maximum passenger weight 220-pounds.
Eagle mini-lesson : [Hands-on Intro Flying Lesson ] Lets YOU do some of the flying !! This is an introductory flying lesson in conjunction with your scenic tour. Your intro flight-lesson* will be with an experienced FAA certified glider (sailplane) pilot, and you'll be able to choose how much of the flying you'd like to do. You'll be amazed at the ease of working the controls, and you'll get an introduction to basic flying maneuvers *available for single-passenger riders only.
Combo soaring flight: Experience a real rush !! ... sign up for both an Aerobatic Ride and Flying Lesson as part of your single-passenger piloted Scenic Tour !
In-flight video: Our two-camera VHS video taping system records your entire flight (including an inset picture-in-a-picture showing YOUR reactions to the sensations you are experiencing, and the panorama you are seeing); and the on-board microphone captures your comments, too. What a souvenir !!
Words to the wise :
For MOST people, especially if you have not been exposed to small-aircraft
flying, we recommend flights of 15, 20, or 30 minutes. Longer flights are
available, but sometimes a slice-of-life will give more enjoyment.
'Longest' is not necessarily 'Best'.
Go with the guys who started it all over 36 years ago, because they'd never been anywhere so beautiful

West Hawai‘i historical sites: Ke‘ekū heiau
Cultural researcher Kalei Nu‘uhiwa shares information about Ke‘ekū heiau, one of the many important historical sites located at Kahalu‘u ma kai. Nu‘uhiwa tells more about the future for this site and the learning that will take place here.
Ke‘ekū is thought to be much younger than nearby Hāpaiali‘i Heiau. Traditions tell us that Lonoikamakahiki defeated the invading Chief Kamalālāwalu of Maui and sacrificed him at Ke‘ekū. The spirits of his grieving dogs, Kauakahi‘oka‘oka and Kapapako, are said to continue to guard the site of Ke‘ekū Heiau. Kī pōhaku (petroglyphs) that speak of the legend of Chief Kamalālāwalu may be visible at low tide.
Students have mapped these images so that all may enjoy without traversing over them.
SPINNER DOLPHIN EXPEDITION - LEEWARD COAST OAHU
Since I was a kid I have always been intrigued by dolphins. I have watched numerous films, been to several marine parks and even thought about becoming a marine biologist with the emphasis on marine mammals. I always thought that I would fork out the usual 3 to 5 hundred dollars it takes to go on a dolphin tour and get to snorkel with them in their own environment and get to see them from a far from the surface of the water. On May 27, 2011 those thoughts and plans were put to shame.
We started cruising the Leeward Coast at about 8:45am and headed to Kaena Point. When we got to the point we spotted a pod. Probably about 10. We tried to anchor down but the waves were too rough. Our buddy Johnny wasted no time and dove in trying to catch the pod. He saw them but they were skittish and swam away. To be honest ... the waves and the current were so strong there that without scuba gear it would have been darn near impossible to swim with that pod. So we decided to head back toward Waianae.
Just after passing the Waianae Boat harbor I noticed that there was a small tour boat and some kayaks on the water in Pokai Bay all converging to one spot. I told our captain, Jeff, I think there's a pod over there... So we whipped around to just outside of the bay ... anchored down ... geared up ... jumped off the back of the boat... and swam toward the group.
Sure enough ... there was a pod of spinners hanging out in the bay ... playing and relaxing. Before the end of the adventure I had counted about 35 in the family.
I can't even begin to describe how it feels to be in their natural habitat ... under the water .... being eye to eye with them. Them checking us out ... us checking them out ... respect all the way around.
As you watch you'll notice that a couple of them have what appears to be yellow tape on their pectoral fins as they swim by. As it turns out ... it's leaves. They pick them up along their journey and play with them, collect them, show them off to the rest of the pod. They will juggle them from one pectoral fin to the other ... and sometimes even to their dorsal fin.... just to say to the rest of the pod, look what I found.
I am so blessed that I was able to do this the NON- touristy way. Just me and my buddy's out exploring... and then finding what we were after. No time limits ... no rules ... under the surface ... with these incredibly smart and playful creatures.
Now that we found them ... I'm sure this won't be the last they'll be seeing of us ... and I'm quite sure they won't mind if we come back to visit.
**Special thanks to my friend, captain Jeff Mullis, who made his day and his boat available to us for this adventure.

Oahu, Dolphins - Tom Barefoot
Visit for more information. Dolphins in Oahu - Lets get very clear about this one point. Dolphins are located throughout the state of Hawaii and can be seen off all the islands. These fun-loving marine animals have a permanent home here in Hawaii and are in the islands all the time. There is no doubt however, that the single best place to view them on a consistent basis is off the Waianae Coastline in the area extending north of Ko'Olina to Kaena Point. This area of Oahu coastline seems to suit the dolphins to a tee as they are found here everyday. Often the best time to see them is in the morning as they are resting on the surface after a big night of foraging and hunting for food. Seemingly always up for a good time and a great adventure, these dolphins almost always rise to the occasion for a bit of play with human snorkelers and this makes for one of the best times you will have on your entire vacation.
KĀKOU – Hawai‘i’s Town Hall The Global Squeeze: How Do We Keep Hawaiʻi Hawaiʻi? | Program
In our second live town hall, we pause to consider where we are, and where we want to be. Change is inevitable. Some changes come quietly, incrementally, over years; others seem to emerge all of a sudden and nearly full-blown. How is Hawai‘i changing – for better, for worse, or both?
This is not a conversation about major controversial events that have been dividing our community. This is not a conversation about pro-this, or anti-that. This is a discussion about the finer details of life in Hawai‘i that affect our sense of place. What details compromise the core essence of Hawai‘i – and where are we willing to draw the line?
We’ve invited 40 individuals from across the state to participate in this frank, respectful and community-based discussion in our studio. We invite you to join the conversation through email and social media, using the hashtag #pbskakou.

HIKI NŌ Episode # 917: Farmer Larry Yonashiro and other stories | Program
TOP STORY
Students from Maui Waena Intermediate School in Kahului, Maui, profile urban farmer Larry Yonashiro. After a thirty-year career as an I.T. professional, Yonashiro wanted to return to his family’s farming roots (his father worked on a pineapple plantation), but in a modern way. “Agriculture’s been a part of my family for a long time,” says Yonashiro. “I just had it in my blood. I wanted to go back to farming.” So he took up aquaponics, not as a hobby (which is how most aquaponics farmers start) but as an actual commercial farm. With the help of his wife, Patty, and their daughter (who has a background in food science), Yonashiro has joined the thriving sustainable farming movement on Maui.
