Llook! East Idaho's llargest pack llama farm!
REXBURG -- It's not at rare as you might think to see a llama ranch in Idaho, but local ranchers Kirsten and Beau Baty say they've got some of the most unique kind -- classic Ccara llamas.
When the couple got married, Beau said Kirstin would would have to be willing to keep a small pack of llamas, but now that small herd has grown to nearly 70 animals.
The Inca used the Ccara llama 6,000 years ago for packing, Kirstin Baty said.
And they're still used for that. Along with breeding and selling, Baty also rents llamas out for camping or hunting trips.
We like to go out and backpack and hunt, move light and fast and get up high, Baty's brother Josh Gundersen said. Llamas enable us to hunt where we want to hunt.
Gundersen said he never saw himself pursuing the lifestyle of llama ranching, but raising the pack animals has become a family affair.
No one ever thinks, 'I'm gonna go buy llamas,' Gundersen said. The first time you go out with a Ccara and spend time in the mountains with them, they're awesome, but I never thought I would raise llamas.
It’s definitely been an interesting adventure, but llamas, they’re really peaceful creatures, Baty said.
Classic llamas aren't bred for wool, but for height, stature, and ultimately packing.
Seventy pounds as a rule-of-thumb is as much as we pack on them, Baty said.
Because of the rigorous process of importing llamas they're no longer allowed to be brought into the U.S., although they may be exported. Baty and Gundersen are doing their best to keep the breed alive in the United States.
You can’t really find classic llamas around any more. The more we looked for llamas the more we realized there weren’t any, Gundersen said.
The llama breeders say they hope to involve the community more in learning about these unique animals.
Our goal is to promote llamas to people, to get other people interested in them, Gundersen said.
The herd continues to grow with an expected 20 new llamas next year.
Llamas Will Extend My Backcountry Elk Hunting Days - Randy Newberg
For hunters who are wondering how many days of backcountry elk hunting they have ahead, llamas can extend that time frame. Good llamas are low maintenance, reliable, docile, and can carry more than you imagine. If you can still hike, a string of llamas can take the weight from your back and give you more days in the elk mountains.
This episode with Randy Newberg features Beau Baty, owner of Wilderness Ridge Trail Llamas. In addition to outfitting and guiding summer backcountry trips, Beau rents llamas to hunters in the fall hunting season. A seasoned backcountry hunter, Beau knows what a hunter needs in llamas.

Hunting & Llamas
Pack llamas as well as horses & mules have been our go to for accessing remote hunting camps in the backcountry for over 25 years. For the last 8 years we have used llamas exclusively and here is why:
Llamas solve a big problem for most back country enthusiast. If you are a backpack hunter looking to extend your distance away from access roads llamas are viable options. A friend of mine first introduced to llamas in 2013 said it best when telling his hunting buddies why he uses llamas: “More gear in, more meat out, longer hunting trips, and better food”.
Hunting remote areas in the fall months has always been a tradition as well as an adventure for us. At each years end the desire to return to the untamed is ever present. Llamas have allowed us to experience our backcountry adventures on a different level giving us the opportunity to go farther, stay longer and hike harder.
It doesn’t matter if you’re the hunter with a coveted limited entry tag in hand looking for the trophy of a lifetime or the hunter with a general season public land tag, the mindset is usually the same: remote area , low hunting pressure, good habitat, with lots of game. This has been a key to our success enjoyment. Llamas are the driving force behind these great experiences. We have come to trust, love and rely on our team of pack llamas and we can’t imagine hunting without them.
Hells Canyon Wilderness
The United States Congress designated the Hells Canyon Wilderness in 1975 and it now has a total of 217,927 acres. Idaho contains approximately 83,811 acres. Oregon contains approximately 134,116 acres. Hells Canyon primarily managed by the U.S. Forest Service with approximately 940-acres managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM).
Hells Canyon Wilderness is a subset of the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area (HCNRA), which straddles the border of northeastern Oregon and western Idaho. Split into two distinct halves by the Wild & Scenic Snake River, approximately one-third of HCNRA is designated Wilderness. A small portion of the Wilderness in Oregon is managed by the BLM.
The Idaho side of the Wilderness is smaller than the Oregon side and encompasses the Seven Devils mountain range. The Wilderness stretches south from Pittsburg Landing for approximately 31 miles along the Snake River.
On the Oregon side, the higher elevation areas are characteristic of rocky slopes and grasslands laced with 'stringer canyons' and groves composed of Douglas fir and ponderosa pine. The lower elevations are dominated by grassland benches with steep canyons and ravines dissecting the isolated Oregon-side. Two National trails are found at various elevations: Western Rim/Summit Ridge Recreation Trail at the upper elevation, and the Nez Perce National Historic Trail near the Snake River. Species of interest are Rocky Mountain Elk, bighorn sheep, mule deer, and chukar.
The Bureau of Land Management's National Conservation Lands, also known as the National Landscape Conservation System, contain some of the West's most spectacular landscapes. It includes over 886 federally recognized areas and approximately 27 million acres that include Wilderness areas.
With the passage of the Omnibus Public Land Act in March 2009, the BLM now manages eight Wilderness Areas across nearly 247,000 acres in Oregon. The BLM also manages one Wilderness Area in Washington covering 7,142 acres. In addition, the BLM currently protects wilderness values on 82 Wilderness Study Areas (WSA) and five Instant Study Areas in Oregon totaling more than 2.6 million acres and one WSA in Washington totaling 5,557 acres.
Wilderness is Congressionally-designated piece land that is managed in accordance with the Wilderness Act of 1964 to ...secure for the American people of present and future generations the benefits of an enduring resource of wilderness. Wilderness areas are places where natural processes take precedent; areas managed so that nature remains substantially unchanged by human use. Rugged trails provide the only access into wilderness, and travel is restricted to foot or horseback.

Llamas on the Mammoth Crest Trail
My wife and I were heading down the Mammoth Crest Trail in Mammoth Lakes, CA, when we happened upon a couple hiking up with four Llamas. The Llamas were carrying all of their stuff for a night at Deer Lakes. The next day my son and I hiked the same trail and ran into them on their return trip.

Fall down go boom
The law of gravity is still in effect.
video taken by Jerry Finnegan. August 31st, 2014 on the Idaho Centennial Trail, East alternate section. we had climbed 5 miles on the Alturas-Mattingly trail starting at Alturas Lake. we reached the ICT trail going to Ross Fork, then turned on the Johnson Creek trail.
Only a mile or so down this new trail, I took a sudden spill. My ankle rolled and I went rolling down the hill. I did a complete somersault and landed on my back with my feet facing downhill.
Jerry was ahead of me on the trail. He took the video about 30 seconds after I fell.
Fortunately my ankle was only a strain instead of a sprain. I still had to backpack another 11 miles out on rugged trails to get to a road where we could make contact with home.

East Eagle Creek - Eagle Cap Wilderness, Oregon
We've been wanting to get in to the Eagle Cap Wilderness for a while now. Finally we made it. We went in for 5 days and 4 nights. On this trip we'd go into Hidden Lake over Horton Pass and in to the Lakes Basin. We stayed a night at Douglas Lake and went down through Six Mile Meadow and on up to Frazier Lake. The next day we went up past Little Frazier Lake, over Hawkins Pass and over to the other side. We made a long climb up to Crater Lake for our last night of the trip. This was one of the most scenic trips I've taken. We'll be back.

SUMMARY
=======
Rocky Mountain National Park is an American national park located approximately 76 mi (122 km) northwest of Denver International Airport in north-central Colorado, within the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains. The park is situated between the towns of Estes Park to the east and Grand Lake to the west. The eastern and westerns slopes of the Continental Divide run directly through the center of the park with the headwaters of the Colorado River located in the park's northwestern region. The main features of the park include mountains, alpine lakes and a wide variety of wildlife within various climates and environments, from wooded forests to mountain tundra.
The Rocky Mountain National Park Act was signed by President Woodrow Wilson on January 26, 1915, establishing the park boundaries and protecting the area for future generations. The Civilian Conservation Corps built the main automobile route, Trail Ridge Road, in the 1930s. In 1976, UNESCO designated the park as one of the first World Biosphere Reserves. In 2017, more than 4.4 million recreational visitors entered the park. The park is one of the most visited in the National Park System, ranking as the third most visited national park in 2015.The park has a total of five visitor centers with park headquarters located at the Beaver Meadows Visitor Center—a National Historic Landmark designed by the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture at Taliesin West. National Forest lands surround the park including Roosevelt National Forest to the north and east, Routt National Forest to the north and west, and Arapaho National Forest to the west and south, with the Indian Peaks Wilderness area located directly south of the park.
