Ocoee River Whitewater Rafting 21 Chilling On The River
The Toccoa River and Ocoee River are actually a single 93-mile-long (150 km) river that flows northwestward through the southern Appalachian Mountains of the southeastern United States. It is called the Toccoa for its 56 miles (90 km) through Georgia, until it reaches the twin cities of McCaysville, Georgia and Copperhill, Tennessee, at the truss bridge which connects Georgia 5 (Blue Ridge Street) with Tennessee 68 and Georgia 60 (Ocoee Street and Toccoa Street). The remainder is called the Ocoee through Tennessee, known for its whitewater rafting, and host to whitewater slalom events during the Centennial 1996 Summer Olympics held primarily in Atlanta, about 100 miles (160 km) to the south. The Ocoee River is a tributary of the Hiwassee River, which it joins in Polk County, Tennessee, near the town of Benton. It was an important river for both the Cherokee and Creek tribes.
The Ocoee's flow is controlled by the Tennessee Valley Authority via three dams. Most often the riverbed is nearly dry in the ten-mile (16 km) stretch used for sporting, the water being diverted through flumes along the side of the mountains. Ocoee #2 dam diverted water, from the middle section of the river, through the flume, until a 2010 rock slide washed out part of the flume, which is currently under repair. The dam was originally built in 1913 by the East Tennessee Power Company to provide hydroelectric power to the new Alcoa company, which was starting aluminum production operations in Blount County, Tennessee, south of Knoxville.
The three Ocoee dams are numbered sequentially, with #1 being the farthest downstream and #3 being the farthest upstream. TVA acquired the two original dams (Ocoee #1 and Ocoee #2) in 1939 and started building Ocoee #3 dam in 1940. These dams generate an average of 67,000 kilowatts of electricity in total. The Middle Section contains some 20 named rapids and provides recreational opportunities throughout its eight-month season. One of the largest rapids on the Middle Ocoee, Hell's Hole, runs right beneath the bridge leading to the power station, with Powerhouse, a significant ledge with a strong hydraulic, right after it. Upstream (to the southeast), TVA also operates Blue Ridge Dam, which creates Lake Blue Ridge (called Blue Ridge Reservoir by TVA).
The whitewater slalom events during the 1996 Summer Olympics were conducted on a one-mile Olympic whitewater course that is fed by releases of water from Ocoee #3. The Ocoee Whitewater Center was built by the U.S. Forest Service for this purpose, including a large building along U.S. 64, whose westbound lanes were originally built as the parking and staging area, allowing it to later become a divided highway in the immediate area to handle summertime traffic. A 4.5-mile whitewater rafting area farther downstream is fed by water released from Ocoee Dam #2. The Olympic section was not open to the public until after the Olympics, while the middle section has been open to the public since the 1970s, mainly for daytime releases of water on weekends and holidays. After the Olympics, rafting tours (including bus transportation) are provided by several different companies located in both directions on U.S. 64, which runs next to the river for a few miles (several kilometers).

Chattooga Section IV Kayaking - 3 Feet - Long Creek, SC
With a fair amount of rain, the Chattooga River came into a good level! I was hoping to get on something in the Jocasse drainage, but Chattooga Section IV is a classic run, so it's hard to complain about catching it at a nice level!
American Whitewater says that anything above 2.5 feet on their gauge is too high - it is not too high to boat, but it is likely too high for people that frequent this section (Class III-IV+). Swimming would be dangerous, as even though there are pools separating the last few rapids (5 falls), they link faster at higher flows. I did have a little bit of a beater moment that could have gone poorly (at Jawbone), but I managed to stay upright at the pillow rock and recover.
Thanks to some of the Long Creek Boys for showing me down - seeing them tackle their backyard run in slicey boats at this level was definitely impressive.

Chattooga Ridge Zip Line Canopy Tour GoPro
My wife and I decided to do something extra ordinary for our 12th anniversary and we certainly had a blast. Long Creek SC features white water rafting on the Chattooga River (trying to convince my wife to do this) and the zip lines were nicely added features. Filmed with GoPro Hero 3 and edited with GoPro Studio. I do not own the rights to music presented within. Music was represented with film structure. All credit to Skip Roxy.
enjoy, share, and like... Highly recommend trying something new and if you are in the Long Creek area, please consider this a stop on your list.

Trip advisor screen shot: My family and I just rafted the Nolichucky on a cold and windy April day.

Great Fun - Veronicaftms
Trip advisor screen shot: We had a ton of fun kayaking the New River. Our guide, Jeffrey, was
very informative and helful. The reason for the 4 star rating was bcuz the directions flyer is WRONG,

A Google user: They are utterly disorganized. It is overpriced. And the worst part it -

Fly-over footage of Great Falls flow test and end credits
Duke Energy conducted a flow study in the bypass regions of the Catawba River in the Great Falls area on Oct. 23 and 24, 2004.
There are two channels -- the short channel, which has the highest classes of rapids, and the long channel, which has a more moderate class of rapids.
With the issuance of the license for the Catawba-Wateree system to Duke Energy, infrastructure for these rapids will begin to be built, and whitewater rapids will flow in these channels during the warm-weather months. The license is expected to be issued some time in 2012.
Until then, enjoy this video of some guys having fun testing out the whitewaters of Great Falls. This video was made by Duke Energy as part of the 2004 flow test and supplied to the Great Falls Home Town Association for use in its programs to promote the Great Falls area.
Search for Drowning Victim
Long Creek, S.C. - Recovery efforts for the body of Thomas Patrick Hill, a Florida resident, on the Chattooga Wild and Scenic River will resume tomorrow at 7 a.m.
Our hearts go out to Mr. Hill's family this evening, said Scott Loftis, Incident Commander for the recovery operation. We know this is a very difficult time for them.
Efforts will continue tomorrow at 7 a.m. for up to 12 hours and will take place via land and boat; water-based operations may be possible depending on weather and if the river's flows fall overnight.
We feel confident that we're conducting our operations in the right area and will continue in that same area tomorrow, said Loftis.
Operations will consist of 15 swiftwater operators from Anderson, as well as Pickens and Oconee counties in South Carolina. Eight land-based rope technicians will be coming from Rabun County, Ga., the state of Georgia and Georgia Search and Rescue. US Forest Service personnel will provide on-river and land-based support.
Two paramedics from Oconee County Medical Center and Rabun County, Ga., will provide medical support for personnel if needed. The South Carolina Helicopter Aquatic Rescue Team (SCHART) will be on standby.
Anderson and Pickens County are providing communications support. The commercial outfitter guides that operate on the Chattooga Wild and Scenic River under permit from the US Forest Service also continue to provide support.
We are thankful for all of the individuals and organizations that are helping us with this recovery effort, said Loftis.Follow Evan on Twitter @EvanDonovanNews

The Chattooga River
For a long time I have been wanted to make a video about the Wild and Scenic Chattooga River set to a cinematic music score. Although the Chattooga is best known for its popular white water rafting and kayaking (been there done that) I chose instead to focus on the natural beauty along the river corridor.
The Chattooga River is one of the most pristine wilderness areas in the eastern United States. Designated a Wild and Scenic River by congress in 1974, it is characterized by dense forests, undeveloped shorelines, whitewater rapids and multiple waterfalls. Its banks and riverbed are riddled with massive boulders and rock formations. In most locations it is extremely difficult to access. Originating in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, the Chattooga flows south through the Nanthahala National Forest before crossing into South Carolina and Georgia. Over the course of some fifty miles the river descends 2500 feet in elevation.
This video is the result of several visits during the summer of 2012 starting at the river's headwaters and following it downstream. Places visited in order of appearance include: Ellicott Rock Wilderness Area, Burrell's Ford, Earls Ford, Sandy Ford, Thrift's Ferry, Bull Sluice, and Woodall Shoals . There are many places I bypassed due to time constraints and lack of any type of trail to them. Some of the most interesting places can only be accessed by whitewater raft or kayak. A person could actually spend months exploring the area.
The Chattooga River was made famous by the movie Deliverance which was nominated for three Academy Awards in 1972 including Best Picture and Best Director. Filmed on the river, it is based on the best selling novel by James Dickey. The movie starred Burt Reynolds, Jon Voight, Ned Beatty and Ronnie Cox. It is said that the actors worked without insurance because no company would cover them due to the high risks while filming on the river.
Shot with a Panasonic HPX170, Igus motorized slider and Glideshot jib. Edited with Edius 5.51 and encoded with TMPGEnc 4. The music title is River and was generously made available for this non-commercial project by the composer Luke Atencio .
