Reinventing a Rural Community - Independence, OR
The City of Independence is a vibrant, historic community located in Oregon’s fertile Willamette Valley. The town center is located on the banks of the Willamette River, one of the great rivers of the west. Independence is a small city that embraces its pioneering roots, and has used that attitude to reinvent itself. Leveraging creative partnerships and community will, the City built and programmed a unique riverfront amphitheater, constructed a new much-expanded library, and built a high-speed fiber to the home broadband network. Once a fading former mill town, Independence is a thriving example of how a rural community can leverage its assets and remain competitive in the new economy.

Thomas Kay Woolen Mill, Salem Oregon - Tour - The Mentzer Machine Shop
The Thomas Kay Woolen Mill - part of the Willamette Heritage Center in Salem OR
This is the machine shop where they repaired and or created new parts for the mill (since shipping parts in from back east could mean weeks of downtime for the mill if something critical was broken)
From the visitor's brochure:
Named for the Mill's faithful and popular millwright, Wayne Mentzer (millwright for 60 years from 1924-1984), the machine shop is where his valuable work took place. The moving machinery and tools on display are original to the Mill and were used for everything from making machine parts to repairing structures.
Another great OR mill tour - highly recommended
