Hiking Willis Creek Slot Canyon - Amazing hike!
Willis Creek Slot Canyon in Cannonville, Utah - a family/kid friendly hike
More pictures:
----------------------------
Distance Round Trip: 2.6 miles to complete the 5 narrows / 4.8 if you complete the canyon
Elevation Gain: ~ 300 ft (it's mostly flat)
Slot canyons are amazing! And Willis Creek is a great first slot canyon if you've never been in one. This canyon is a perfect side-trip if you are passing through and need a break from Bryce Canyon, or any of the other National Parks nearby. It's an easy, relatively flat hike and requires no acrobatics, rappelling or other complicated feats to access. Simply park at the trailhead and walk right in -- you'll hit the first of 5 narrows in no time. Each successive section gets a bit narrower and taller as you go, and depending on the water levels you may find it harder and harder to keep your feet dry. Be prepared and bring some nice sturdy waterproof boots, or river-walking sandals if you have them!!!
The trailhead for Willis Creek is a bit remote and is a few miles out on a dusty dirt track that passes through Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. Be sure to drop in at the Visitor Center in Cannonville, Utah to check road conditions and get some helpful tips before you head onwards:
DIRECTIONS:
From the Visitors Center, simply turn right and head down Kodachrome Road. After about 2.8 miles you'll see a dirt road branching off to the right -- it's well marked with a sign reading Skutumpah Road, but can be easy to miss if you are driving too fast. Turn right onto the dirt road and follow it for another 6.3 miles to a clearly marked trailhead. If you look closely at the Google Maps link I'll place at the end, you can see there are a few additional roads branching off along the way. None of these look even remotely friendly, especially if you aren't in a 4WD vehicle, so don't worry too much about getting lost and just use common sense to guide your way. We made the whole trip safely in a Hyundai Accent and there was only one section that gave us pause: just past halfway you'll cross a small dam and there may be some water collected in the roadway. The water wasn't an issue, but we did scrape our nose slightly crossing the dam. Other than that, a few steep, curvy sections are all that stand in your way. Take it slow and you'll be fine -- but definitely don't drive this road if it's even a little bit muddy though…even a tank would have difficulty reaching the trail in wet weather!!!

Willis Creek Slot Canyon
A virtual tour and hike through Willis Creek Slot Canyon near Bryce Canyon, Utah. Read the complete story at our BackRoadsWest Trip Blog at
Hiking Willis Creek Slot Canyon is easy. Of all the slot canyons that we've been to in the Southwest (and there have been dozens), this one, by far, gives you the most bang for your buck. It's easy to get to and, even though it requires driving on a dirt road, a standard automobile should have no problems. And, unlike other slot canyons, you simply walk into it from where you park your car -- no ropes, ladders or rock scrambling.
Willis Creek Narrows Cannonville, Utah
Me and my good friend Hal took a little 2 day hiking trip out to Utah. We did a lot of hiking up there but this was our favorite hike of them all. Willis Creek Narrows right outside of Cannonville Utah. It was about two 2.6 mile round-trip creek hike through many different scenic slot canyons. You can really see how fun and beautiful this place really is! For info and directions
Willis Creek Slot - Cannonville Utah
Willis Creek Slot - Cannonville Utah. Willis Creek is located in the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in Southern Utah. This hike is a 4.8-mile round trip taking you through 3 section of gorgeous slots. More than half of the hike involves numerous creek crossings and in some places directly in the creek. The creek however is normally only an inch or two deep. In our opinion it is one of the best slot canyons for photography enthusiasts. In all the canyons in the Southwest this one really delivers bang for your buck. The Willis Creek Narrows are absolutely stunning. This hike is a must if you live in Utah and is looking for a little less traveled hiking destination. And since you are only a little more than 10 miles from Bryce Canyon National Park, this adventure can easily be added to your to-do list if you are in the area.
Willis Creek Slot Canyon | Kanab, UT
First visit to Grand Staircase - Escalante National Monument and we had to check this out. From all the pictures we had seen, we were surprised there was so much water in the canyon. This is a great hike to do with kids to get them enjoying the slot canyons. It was muddy and wet and our girls had so much fun!

Willis Creek Slot Canyon Tour
Willis Creek Slot Canyon is a fantastic high-walled narrow gorge in the Grand Staircase National Monument. It is part of Dreamland Safari Tours' Photographer's Dream Tour. The permanent stream that flows through makes it a bubbly gurgly aural sensation while its striations and cathedral like vaulted ceilings and colorful striations delight the eyes. With it's easy hikability it is one of the highlights of this tour. Check out our website to find out more:

2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit (Hemi) on muddy road, trying to reach the Willis Creek Slot Canyon in Southern Utah.
Willis Creek is located within Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. From Cannonville, Utah head south on Kodachrome Road, which becomes Cottonwood Canyon Road. Turn right on BLM 500, also named Skutumpah Road, before arriving at Kodachrome Basin State Park.
Willis Creek Slot Canyon
This slot canyon might be our favorite, located in northern Kane County along the Skutumpah Road. The trail head is literally steps from the first water fall. Just follow the running water until it disappears into the sand stone cliffs. All water falls are easily negotiated, and open spaces let the sun in throughout the hike.

Na Gah Slot Canyon | Capitol Reef NP Utah
Na Gah Canyon - Weird Name, Great Canyon. This was a fun afternoon romp through a great little canyon. Took us only a few hrs to knock out. It is a bit of a walk around to get into this canyon, but not bad. There was an accident earlier this year on the hike in route where rain storms loosened rock and dirt and dislodged a large boulder as a group was traversing over it. This resulted in a SAR call and medical emergency, but the one victim that was injured was/will be OK.
There are three mandatory rappels in this canyon. All bolted as is almost standard protocol in the National Parks. Capitol Reef isn't getting as much pressure as many of the other National Parks like Arches and Zion, but it is starting to pick up. We opted for a fun Non-Mandatory rappel off a tree in order to avoid a ledge walk around. This also added a little more to the canyon.
The big final rappel in this canyon is epic and spectacular. It's a gorgeous drop approx. 150 ft. to the canyon wash floor at the bottom. Absolutely stunning. If ya need to knock off a few hours in the area, I'd highly recommend this canyon. Actually - go do Cassidy Arch Canyon along with the three hundred other people that are going to do it that day - Hahahaha

Zebra and Tunnel Slot Canyons Escalante, Utah.
Zebra and Tunnel Slot Canyons in Escalante, Utah are unique. The banding in the sandstone in Zebra is not like many other slots. The colors are different and nature's design is one of a kind.
Although the canyon is very short it has a lot to offer to the photographer. A crow has taken up residence and made quite a mess down one wall but we did not find it in the way. Another hiker who was there early in the morning commented on the racket the bird was making.
Since this slot is so short and you return the way back down the canyon it may be a good idea to travel in and out in small groups. In other words take turns so everyone can enjoy and photograph. There is little to no room in this narrow gulch.
Tunnel is not that photogenic. It is just like the name, more of a tunnel with little light. It has a spooky feel to it. There was waste deep water when I was there and it was very cold. The trip is only a few hundred feet long. I found it to be quite fun.
One thing that stands out about this trip is the walk to and from. It is a very pretty hike. Another thing I found interesting was the Moki marbles or balls that litter the wash.

Willis Creek
Willis Creek is a slot canyon just outside of Bryce Canyon. Its an easy hike but to get there you must take a dirt road. I would suggest having a car with all wheel drive because there was one section that was very tought to get up in our rental minivan but it was manageable.

This 8.5 mile loop included: narrow slots, tall canyon walls, freezing temperatures, stemming over water, snow, ice, and a lot of fun!
This hike was done in February 2019. My track for this hike was 8.5 miles long, and it included using my hands to climb over rock and avoid ice and standing water.

DAY-HIKING - The Amazing Narrows at Willis Creek Canyon Trail
In this video, my daughter and I waited a few weeks before we went hiking this trail because it had been raining continuously in Utah and the flash floods warnings were happening every day. On this Saturday, the weather was promising as it said that the skies were going to be clear all day. Of course, the weather app was not correct.
Willis Creek Canyon is located in Canyonville in the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in Utah., and it runs through a wash, which in some sections narrows, to become a slot canyon. The creek is becoming popular with hikers who have to hike through a few inches of water. This slot canyon has five sections of narrow walls which are the main attraction of this trail.
We crossed Bryce Canyon before getting to Canyonville, and then, finally getting into the dirt road that took us to the trailhead. This dirt road is about 2-3 miles long, so it took us about 45 minutes to get through it because I didn't want to get a flat tire. When we got there, we saw a few cars on the trailhead and set off on our hike. The narrow and tall walls are beautiful, and it is about 3 miles out and back. It is an easy trail to hike, but it will get shoes and feet wet. We saw some dark clouds approaching and decided to go back to the car. It was a beautiful hike in a fantastic place. I highly recommend it!
