London Walk: YouTube Space London, St Pancras, King's Cross, British Library, Euston Station
London walk starting at the YouTube Space London on Pancras Road (with a quick nosey inside) heading towards Pancras Square, then St Pancras Station and King’s Cross Station, including the Great Northern Hotel leading to the King’s Cross Real Food Market before crossing onto Euston Road past the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel up to the British Library, passing the Shaw Theatre and London Pullman Hotel, through Euston Square Gardens with the BT Tower in the distance and finally ending up at Euston train and underground station.
Join me on a beautiful Spring day in London where people are quick to enjoy the sunshine in the area around St Pancras, King’s Cross and Euston stations. You will see some very happy people sitting outside the Great Northern Hotel enjoying an al-fresco lunch framed by a lovely floral arch over the hotel door while the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel, not to be outdone, looks rather grand against the blue skies. The British Library was also revelling in the weather as people took lunch in the courtyard and this was repeated in Euston Square Gardens with midday picnics aplenty. Yes, we really do make the most of it when the sun comes out! For dog lovers, my little French bulldog puts in a couple of appearances at the end, the little photo and sunshine lover that he is????
The YouTube Space London is where YouTube creators can make use of the studios and production facilities, attend workshops (I was there for a guided meditation) and hang out to connect with others in their field. The YouTube Space is located in the area around King’s Cross which has undergone considerable regeneration over the past decade, but it only takes a few minutes of walking to find the older neighbours still well in evidence. This can be done by taking the alternative, less polluted walk between Euston and King’s Cross which is signposted as you leave Euston station; I plan to record that walk soon as an add-on to this one. To see inside King’s Cross and St Pancras Stations, please watch my video recorded in December 2018.

London
London is the capital city of England and the United Kingdom, the largest metropolitan area in the United Kingdom, and the largest urban zone in the European Union by most measures. Located on the River Thames, London has been a major settlement for two millennia, its history going back to its founding by the Romans, who named it Londinium. London's ancient core, the City of London, largely retains its square-mile mediaeval boundaries. Since at least the 19th century, the name London has also referred to the metropolis developed around this core. The bulk of this conurbation forms the London region and the Greater London administrative area, governed by the elected Mayor of London and the London Assembly.
London is a leading global city, with strengths in the arts, commerce, education, entertainment, fashion, finance, healthcare, media, professional services, research and development, tourism and transport all contributing to its prominence. It is the world's leading financial centre alongside New York City and has the fifth-largest metropolitan area GDP in the world, and the largest in Europe (as of 2008). London has been described as a world cultural capital. It is the world's most visited city and has the world's largest city airport system measured by passenger traffic. London's 43 universities form the largest concentration of higher education in Europe. London has a diverse range of peoples and cultures, and more than 300 languages are spoken within its boundaries. In July 2010 Greater London had an official population of 7,825,200, making it the most populous municipality in the European Union, and accounting for 12.5% of the UK population. The Greater London Urban Area is the second-largest in the EU with a population of 8,278,251, while London's metropolitan area is the largest in the EU with an estimated total population of between 12 million and 14 million. London had the largest population of any city in the world from around 1831 to 1925.
London contains four World Heritage Sites: the Tower of London; Kew Gardens; the site comprising the Palace of Westminster, Westminster Abbey, and St Margaret's Church; and the historic settlement of Greenwich (in which the Royal Observatory marks the Prime Meridian (0° longitude) and GMT). Other famous landmarks include Buckingham Palace, the London Eye, Piccadilly Circus, St Paul's Cathedral, Tower Bridge, Trafalgar Square and Wembley Stadium. London is home to numerous museums, galleries, libraries, sporting events and other cultural institutions, including the British Museum, National Gallery, Tate Modern, British Library, Wimbledon, and 40 West End theatres. The London Underground is the oldest underground railway network in the world and the second-most extensive (after the Shanghai Metro).

London goes beyond any boundary or convention. It contains every wish or word ever spoken, every action or gesture ever made, every harsh or noble statement ever expressed. It is illimitable. It is Infinite London. (Peter Ackroyd, London: The Biography.)
I've been walking about London for the last thirty years, and I find something fresh in it every day. (Walter Besant, on his deathbed)
By seeing London, I have seen as much of life as the world can show. ; When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford. (Samuel Johnson)
London always reminds me of a brain. It is similarly convoluted and circuitous. A lot of cities, especially American ones like New York and Chicago, are laid out in straight lines. Like the circuits on computer chips, there are a lot of right angles in cities like this. But London is a glorious mess. It evolved from a score or so of distinct villages, that merged and meshed as their boundaries enlarged. As a result, London is a labyrinth, full of turnings and twistings just like a brain. (James Geary, American journalist, author and aphorist. 'On London')
I loved living in London, and I didn't want to leave.

Amesbury (/ˈeɪmzbəri/) is a town and civil parish in Wiltshire, England. It is most famous for the prehistoric monument of Stonehenge which is in its parish, and for the discovery of the Amesbury Archer—dubbed the King of Stonehenge in the press—in 2002. It has been confirmed by archaeologists that it is the oldest continuously occupied settlement in the United Kingdom, having been first settled around 8820 BC.[2]
King Alfred the Great left it in his will, a copy of which is in the British Library, to his youngest son Aethelweard (c.880-922).
Eleanor of Provence, Queen consort of Henry III of England, died in Amesbury on 24 or 25 June 1291, and was buried in Amesbury Priory.
The parish includes the hamlets of Ratfyn and West Amesbury, and most of Boscombe Down military airfield.Economy
Avient Aviation had its United Kingdom offices in the Minton Distribution Park in Amesbury.[23][24]
Transport
Amesbury is 6 miles (10 km) from the nearest station at Grateley on the London to Salisbury line. The town's own station, Amesbury railway station, was closed in 1963 along with the rest of the Bulford Camp Railway.
Amesbury Bus Station closed in January 2014 along with the station in nearby Salisbury as a cost cutting measure,[25] but longer distance Salisbury Reds services still stop in the town. Stagecoach operate a Salisbury-Amesbury-Tidworth-Andover service,[26] and National Express coaches run Salisbury-Amesbury-London.[27]

Know Your Borough (1951)
Recently digitised by London's Screen Archives, and largely unseen since it was produced in the early 1950s, this rather beautiful 16mm film was made by Wimbledon Cine Club and commissioned by the Municipal borough of Wimbledon to show the many activities carried out in the district by the council. The voiceover is provided by BBC TV and radio newsreader Frank Phillips.
The core of the film focuses on how the rates are spent on essential services – street cleaning, refuse collection, sewage, parkland, etc. – and how the council is working to defray the rates by recycling and producing fertiliser. The film is bookended by two sequences taken from the Town Hall’s council chambers: the first of which shows a council meeting in session, the second features the ancient ceremony of Mayor Making.
Sights of significance include Wimbledon Town hall, a trash destructor facility on Durnsford Road, Wimbledon Common, possibly Cannizaro Park as well (the voiceover mentions the council’s recent acquisition of the park but it is not clear if it is actually shown – if you know, tell us!) and scant views of River Wandle.
This film is from the Merton Heritage and Local Studies Centre. (The full catalogue record for this film, LSA25860, is available at londonsscreenarchives.org.uk.)
