Windsor Ruins Port Gibson Mississippi
Windsor Ruins has an unbelievable story. The owner, Smith Daniell, apparently only got to enjoy the place for a few weeks after its completion when he died. It is rumored Mark Twain visited the home. During a party, someone left a lit cigar upstairs starting a fire, burning the place to the ground. Only the columns remained. There aren’t any known pictures of the home. Only a sketch. At some point during the Civil War it was used as a hospital. Windsor Ruins is between Rodney, Mississippi, a must see, and Port Gibson, Mississippi. Follow this link for more information:

The Windsor Ruins at Port Gibson Mississippi
In June of 2015 i had the good fortune to visit the Windsor Ruins at Port Gibson, Mississippi. The funny thing is that before i ever even knew what these columns were, i insisted that they be a part of the background in our new logo for The Storied Salvage Company, they just captivated me. However nothing makes up for being there, this place is hauntingly beautiful.
When we arrived there was nobody there, it was late on a Sunday afternoon, and it was so peaceful, the birds provided the only soundtrack. We got out the camera, the drone and started to shoot. We used drones to make this video, giving us the opportunity to get up close and personal with the very top of the columns, something not seen by many.
The columns rise over 100 feet high, and are actually soaked in concrete, something which was apparently done in the late sixties to preserve them, supposedly by keeping the moisture out. Unfortunately all this did was seal the moisture in. Construction of the house began in 1859 and was completed by 1861. The owner, Daniel Coffee II, lived in the house for just a few weeks before he died from Yellow Fever caused by a mosquito bite, very common at that time, the same day that saw the outbreak of the Civil War. It is said that the cost of the house was around $175,000 ($4,000,000 in today's money). It is believed to be the largest private home ever built in Mississippi, before or since. Mark Twain, who was a frequent visitor to the house, is said to have said remarked that it felt more like a College than a residence.

Port Gibson is a city in Claiborne County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,567 at the 2010 census. Port Gibson is the county seat of Claiborne County and home to the Claiborne County Courthouse.

The iconic Windsor Ruins, located in Claiborne County MS, near Lorman/Alcorn State Univ. and Port Gibson MS. These are the remains of what was the largest antebellum mansion in Mississippi. Windsor was used as a hospital by Union soldiers during the Battle of Port Gibson, prior to the Siege of Vicksburg. The home burned in 1890.

Windsor Ruins Aerials
The ghostly remains of what was and remains the largest mansion in Mississippi.
Built around 1860, it was 30 years later an afternoon fire consumed the entire 25 room structure.
The columns tower almost 50 feet and are huge. Although hidden from the road by thick trees and overgrowth, that has all been cleared giving the ruins an even more dreary atmosphere.
This would be a good place for paranormal investigators; in its short 30 year lifespan the Windsor hosted dozens of high society parties, but as the civil war came to a bloody end, the mansion had been used by both Union and Confederate soldiers as lookout tower, as the lookout on the top provided a view of the nearby Mississippi River.

Searching for the Windsor Ruins
Driving to the Windsor Ruins at night down one of the strangest roads I had ever seen in one of the poorest areas of the US, overgrown, poorly maintained, and with weird residents like the house that appeared to have a circle of fires in their front yard. This really did feel a bit like my own Blair Witch tape at the time.
