Amtrak Coast Starlight, in a Sleeper Car Bedroom

--1,377 miles

--29 stops (a few afford a chance for some fresh air, for a few minutes)
--incalculable jaw drops at the beauty seen from along the ocean coastline to the snowy mountain ranges and backdoor views of towns and cities.
I can't recommend this enough! What an experience! What a way to see the country! The whole ride was smooth, quiet, and tranquil. Whether you enjoy a book in the glass-domed car while sipping on some coffee, or nurse a beer through the passing majesty outside your window, you are rocked gently into a relaxation that is unlike any other. The staff was ever ready to accommodate needs and/or wants. Guest speakers rode along, regaling passengers with tales of the flora, fauna, and history of the areas. Fellow passengers were in equal states of awe and wonder, evidenced by the acknowledging head tilts complete with twinkling eyes and hearty grins. Childhood fancy was stirred together with an aged appreciation and I found that though we were moving northward, time had stood still.
Note: Yes...I have since learned to refrain from filming in portrait mode, when using a phone. ????
Note: Thank you, all, who have clarified that it's a Lounge Car featured in this video, not an actual Parlour Car. I did not intend to mislead anyone; during our ride, the staff and fellow passengers were calling it the Parlour Car, and I was at fault for following the flock in my understanding. Our train's Parlour Car must have been undergoing maintenance, at the time. I did find, however, the Lounge Car to be quite enjoyable. Nevertheless, I imagine riding with an official Parlour Car would enhance the experience, greatly. Thank you all, for clarifying this, for me and for others.
Note: for mobile device viewers, annotations don't appear on-screen. At the 2:28 mark, it should be noted that There is a traditional door on this bathroom; it's just not visible, here.

The staircase separates the living and dining rooms, and they share a papered feature wall. The dining room has recessed wall niches with accent lighting, and the living room has fantastic outdoor views while enjoying the warmth of a two-sided corner fireplace with a glass-tiled facade - which also warms the kitchen and breakfast areas.
The breakfast area has a walk-out to the backyard, and the kitchen showcases an efficient, modern design with contemporary cabinetry with stainless steel accents. Directly to the left of the foyer is the massive family room, which has four windows (including a bay window), a fireplace with a floor-to-ceiling concrete facade, as well as a built-in projector and movie screen. Off this space is a 3-pc washroom with a linen closet, a vanity with glass counter and a vessel basin, as well as a shower area; the home office, which has a walk-out onto the backyard deck and two walls of windows; and the second bedroom, which features two double closets, and a walk-out to the backyard.
Directly off the upper landing is the third bedroom, which features a vaulted ceiling with a skylight, and another skylight in its walk-in closet. The main washroom has polished marble floor and wall tiles, a vanity with granite counter and under mount basins, a vaulted ceiling with two skylights, a corner tub, and a glass shower. The sunken exercise room has three skylights and a huge window with outdoor views - and steps up to the double door entry for the impressive master suite. This luxuriously sized personal oasis features a sitting area warmed by a fireplace with concrete facade, while the bedroom area has two walls of windows with spectacular outdoor views, and two walk-outs onto its private wrap-around balcony. The massive walk-in closet has a vaulted ceiling, and custom closet organizers. Clifton's Cafeteria - Los Angeles, CA
Clifton's Cafeteria, once part of a chain of eight Clifton's restaurants, is the oldest surviving cafeteria style eatery in Los Angeles. and the largest public cafeteria in the world. Founded in 1931 by Clifford Clinton, the name was created by combining Clifford and Clinton to produce Clifton's
On the ground floor, the revamped cafeteria should feel familiar to anyone who's ever grazed at the deli section of a high-end supermarket - except that this cafeteria will stay open until 2 a.m. every day. The ground floor is also occupied by The Mill bakery, which serves Verve coffee, and a gift shop stocked with wine, chocolate, dates and other California-produced edibles.
On the second floor you'll find the Monarch Bar, which serves craft beer, sodas and floats, as well as a miniature chapel designed for kids. (Sadly, the neon cross that illuminated the original was broken during renovations.) The other major attraction will be hard to miss. At the center of an atrium that Meieran cut into the building stands a 40-foot-tall fake redwood tree. Its base is located near the Monarch Bar on the second level and it reaches up to the ceiling with reinforced branches designed to hold aerialists.
The third floor is home to the Gothic Bar, which features a booth named after sci-fi writer Ray Bradbury, a patron of the original Clifton's who became a pal of Meieran's. Belly up to a 19th-century gothic altar-turned-bar for cocktails created by bartenders Damian Windsor and Dustin Newsome. The third floor also features Clinton Hall, a ballroom space intended for private events, and lots of taxidermy dioramas created in consultation with experts from the Natural History Museum.
UPDATE : Clifton’s Republic ceased serving food at the first floor cafeteria.

Best Buffet in LA! | Feasting on Lobster, King Crab, Prime Rib at Universal Studios @ Universal City
(Sept 1, 2019 update: There has been multiple comments posted over the last weekend that the selection of this buffet has been reduced; with no more king crab and only smaller (half) lobsters offered. This did not reflect my experience there (on Aug 11, 2019). Please note that I am not sponsored in anyway and absolutely do not take any free meals from the places I visit.)
Sometimes, either by chance or by luck, one happens to stumble upon an amazing meal when they least expect it; this was one of those times. While traveling and visiting Universal Studios and Universal City with some friends on our trip to Los Angeles, I did some exploring on my own. Feeling a bit peckish with all the walking, I searched for restaurants around me and followed a link that promised a lobster, seafood, and prime rib buffet. That promise of an amazing seafood meal was fulfilled in spades!
The $69 buffet at Cafe Sierra was an amazing experience with massive king crab offerings, lobsters done to perfection, and many great cuts of meats and international offerings. This was the best buffet I've found in Los Angeles!
Great atmosphere and welcoming servers and hosts, this clearly was one of the most enjoyable meals I've had. If you're in the area, or are visiting/touring the LA area, Universal City, or Universal Studios, this is definitely my highly recommended place to have a memory (and large) meal.

Dinner at Osteria in Palo Alto, CA
Here's a quick rundown of a delicious Italian dinner at Osteria this week. Mmmmmm... Amazing.
New York City Food Tour : HUGE Pastrami Sandwich at Katz’s Deli and The Halal Guys!
Join me on this delicious New York City food tour!
►Check out my NYC food guide:
►Get a t-shirt here:
New York City is an incredible food city because of the diversity of the food available. On this New York City food tour we started off the day by going to one of the most famous restaurants in NYC, Katz's Delicatessen to eat pastrami. Next, we ate at a restaurants in New York City Chinatown called Spicy Village for an amazing pan of “Spicy Big Tray Chicken,” and for dinner I had chicken over rice from The Halal Guys, one of the most popular New York City street foods.
1:21 Katz's Delicatessen - There are few places in New York City for food as famous as Katz's Delicatessen, an absolute legendary deli in the city. Although it’s well overpriced, because it’s such a heritage NYC institution, it’s one of the must eat restaurants in the city. I arrived early in the morning, hoping to beat the crowds, which I did (go for breakfast if you want to avoid lines). After a little contemplation, I decided to go for the reuben with pastrami and a half of corned beef. The corned beef was alright, but the reuben with pastrami was incredible. Total price - $48.56
13:32 Spicy Village - Next up on this New York City food tour my wife and I walked around New York City Chinatown and eventually found our way over to a restaurant called Spicy Village (thanks to Monty for this recommendation). The one dish I mainly wanted to eat at Spicy Village was the Spicy big tray chicken, a pan of fried chicken parts and noodles in a spicy and mouth numbing broth. It was everything I had hoped for and more, and it was one of the best foods I ate in New York City! Total price - $22 - But along with the spicy big tray chicken we had an extra dish as well.
18:32 Times Square - One of the busiest and most recognized squares in the world is Times Square in New York City. So in the afternoon, happy and full of Spicy Village and Katz’s Deli, we walked over to Times Square to enjoy the people watching and the ridiculous amount of lights and action.
20:19 The Halal Guys - While walking through Times Square I remembered that one of the most popular New York City street food stalls wasn’t too far away. So we walked over to The Halal Guys, and I ordered chicken over rice. The chicken over rice itself is prepared pretty plain, but the flavor in The Halal Guys is all in the white and red sauce, both of which are incredibly flavorful and delicious. It was my first time to eat at The Halal Guys, and I’m pretty happy I did. Chicken over rice - $7
It was a great first full day in New York City with some incredibly delicious food. Probably my favorite dish of the day was the spicy big tray chicken from Spicy Village, but all the food was so food.

CHEF TIMOTHY HOLLINGSWORTH
______
Chef Timothy Hollingsworth’s 13 year history in Napa Valley, blended with his present roots as an Angeleno living in downtown Los Angeles, sets the stage for an environment of sophisticated rusticity with highly eclectic, vibrant, and seasonal flavors.
While working at The French Laundry under Chef Thomas Keller in 2008, Hollingsworth competed in the Bocuse d’Or USA, where he was awarded the opportunity to represent the United States at the Bocuse d’Or World Cuisine Contest—the biennial global cooking competition first envisioned in 1987 by revered French chef Paul Bocuse. Hollingsworth subsequently completed a rigorous training process, during which he worked with some of the industry’s most influential figures. In early 2009, Hollingsworth traveled to Lyon, France to compete in the prestigious event, where he placed sixth out of 24 prominent chef teams from around the world.
THE TABLE, THE EXPERIENCE
______
Otium strips away the formalities of dining while focusing on the quality of food, warm service, and relaxed casual ambiance. It is designed to be a social restaurant with an open kitchen merging indoor and outdoor spaces. The restaurant’s name, Otium, has its roots in Latin, a word that is meant to emphasize a place where time can be spent on leisurely social activities.
