Aix en Provence France | The City of 1000 Fountains | 90 + Countries with 3 Kids
Welcome to our tour of Aix-en-Provence!
Aix-en-Provence in Southern France is a charming little city that is just a short drive away from the beaches of the Côte d’Azur. It received its name from a thermal spring and it was founded as Aquae Sextiae by Sextius Calvinus in 122BC. This means that Aix-en-Provence is packed with history. With more than 300 sunny days each year it’s the perfect place for romantic and holiday vacations where visitors can enjoy its facades, cobblestone streets and thermal springs.
Often called Aix by locals, this city is one of the most appealing destinations in the South of France. Known as is the city of a thousand fountains, it has a backdrop of breathtaking mountains and countryside, and is home to some fantastic gastronomy.
Thanks to its compact centre, this is a city that’s easily explored on foot. We recommend you first visit the main thoroughfare, Cours Mirabeau, a street lined with cafés, restaurants and elegant houses, all shaded by rows of centuries-old trees.
Here, on Cours Mirabeau, you will get to see three of the city’s more notable fountains. The first one is a 19th-century work depicting King René holding the Muscat grapes he introduced to Provence in the 15th century. The second is a natural hot spring covered in moss, dating back to Roman times and the last one is a 1860 La Rotonde, beneath three giant statues representing art, justice and agriculture. However, the most spectacular fountain of all is the 17th-century Fontaine des Quatre Dauphins (Fountain of the Four Dolphins) in the Quartier Mazarin.

Discover Provence wines - VINOA
Vinoa's first box was dedicated to the region of lavenders, a handful of Roman monuments and some very beautiful vineyards. Yes, September's box was all about Provence wine. The warm climates of the region are recognised for producing fruity full bodied roses. In fact, Provence is the largest producer of pink wine in France, but this does not mean that the reds and whites of the region should go unnoticed. We toured through the South of France by tasting one white; Cassis Blanc, one rose; Coteaux Varois and two reds; Bandol and Le Vallon. Each wine was selected for their ability to express the region and its signature for enjoying the best that the world has to offer, as much through the vivid landscape as the menu of Provencal tastes. Though our boxes are small, the carry huge chances for discovery.

Château Léoube wine estate on the Côte d'Azur in Provence
Victoria and Shelley joined wine journalist Nuria for a private tour of the gorgeous wine estate. Marketing director Jerome Pernot kindly took us on a mini safari through the garrigue clad hills nestling the vines, followed by a visit to the winery, tasting their range of 7 wines, as well as lunch at the Pellegrin beach.
Most memorable was the care and attention taken with the entire estate, and how the nature stands foremost in the bio-dynamic method of viticulture. Very inspiring!
Merci beaucoup, we love the story :-)

The Gem of the South of France: Aix-en-Provence
Aix-en-Provence is one of the oldest cities in the South of France, and is an absolute treasure. Sun shines in this city over 300 days on average per year, making it the perfect French getaway! I studied abroad in Aix for a cumulative total of around 6 months, and keep on coming back at every opportunity I get.

Aix-en-Provence (France) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Aix-en-provence in France.
Hot springs once inspired the Romans to settle in a valley below the Celtic Oppidum that they had just destroyed. However, today’s Aix-En-Provence and its numerous lanes offer far more than simply water.Aix is one of the most beautiful cities in France and its numerous fountains and majestic squares highlight the city’s unique ambience and romantic character. Indeed, more than forty spectacular fountains cool down this ancient town in the hot months of summer when both foreign and French tourists visit the city. Nearly all of its splendid buildings and wonderful avenues date back to the 17th and 18th centuries, the Golden Age of Aix-En-Provence. As a centre of education and fine art this elegant city continues to be a rich source of creative inspiration.

Aix-en-Provence in the south of France - complete movie
Aix-en-Provence is so lovely that various French surveys have chosen it the most desirable city in which to live, due to the ambience of this special place. The modest population of just 150,000 residents gives it a small-town charm, yet Aix is big enough to provide all the necessities and comforts of urban living. Nearly 30 percent are university students, lending an air of youthful energy, culture and enthusiasm, plus you’ll always find budget places to eat when there are so many young people around.
The pedestrian zone is an idyllic urban landscape of pretty, low-rise buildings three and four centuries old, criss-crossed by a maze of tranquil pedestrian lanes lined with shops and cafes. This automobile-free zone is only about one half-mile across, so you can see most of it in a few hours, but it feels larger because the lanes are narrow and winding in a pleasant tangle.
You might sometimes find yourself going in circles, a bit lost, but that is part of the charm of exploring a place for the first time. Don’t be dismayed if you are walking along a lane for the second or third time, in an opposite direction – you will always notice new things to see. It’s a fact that we only absorb or notice a small fraction of the sights and stimuli around us, so a second and third visit down the same attractive lane can be quite entertaining.
Provence Rosé Wine - So Special?
What are Provence Rosé wines, and what makes them unique in the world of French wine, and in the world of wine in general: discussing their color, style, flavors, winemaking, terroir. soils and climate, etc.
Provence pink wines explained while reviewing and tasting 2018 Chateau Routas Coteaux Varois en Provence Vin Rosé, a fine example of Southern France Rosé.
Winery Notes about Chateau Routas Provence Rosé
Grape Variety:
45% Cinsault 35% Grenache 20% Syrah
Appellation:
A.O.C. Coteaux Varois en Provence
Average age of vines:
15 years
Vinification:
The grapes are gently destemmed, cooled and pressed. The juice and the skins remain in contact for 24 hours. After this brief maceration, 8% of the Syrah goes straight into wooden barrels for primary and malolactic fermentation. The Cinsault, Grenache and remaining Syrah are fermented in stainless steel tanks, blocked from malolactic fermentation. The two different lots are aged separately, and blended prior to bottling.
Aging:
3 months
When to drink:
After bottling, and for a further 2 years.
Tasting Notes:
Freshly cut watermelon, ripe peach aromas and floral notes lead to a palate alive with wild strawberries and hints of mineral notes. Crisp acidity and a refreshing finish.
