WE DRANK TOO MUCH WINE // Travel with me to Porto
Yes indeed, we drank way too much wine! But we couldn't help it when it was cheaper than water...
I was way too nostalgic editing this video because Porto made it to the top of my favourite holiday destinations list. I had the best time with one of my closest friends - Naomi (who you may recognise as she takes all my photos), not only because she is a close friend but because we are the same type of travellers; planners but spontaneous and open minded.
On arrival to Porto, we were welcomed by our Airbnb host, Miguel, who is the loveliest person! He invited us to his place to try some port wine, showed us around town, took us to lunch and shared a bit of history. His apartment is in the PERFECT location and has the BEST view - better than the 'lookout spot'. Here is a link to the apartment (I strongly recommend it):
Here is a brief itinerary according to the video:
Palácio da Bolsa (inside of which we had a wine tasting for 2.5€!)
Wine Quay Bar - where we had the best sangrias and an entree of octopus before dinner
Restaurante Ora Viva - Shellfish & Rice with prawns and squid
Livraria Lello & Irmão (library) - where J.K Rowling got inspired to create the staircase in Harry Potter
MUST TRY Pastéis de Nata - Portuguese dessert
Praia Da Luz
Lunch - A Mascara Fondue Restaurante - 10€ for soup, main, dessert and wine!
Praia Do Molhe
Caipicompany Molhe - for 3.5€ Caipirinhas
Dinner at Esplanada Marisqueira «A Antiga» - Michelin star, local and fresh seafood, affordable and delicious lobster, very friendly staff who gave us a tour of the seafood tanks
Dama Pé de Cabra - UGHH ONE OF THE BEST MEALS I HAVE EVER HAD! We bought Port jam from there only to have it taken away at security at the airport :(
Capela das almas
Ponte de Dom Luís I
Kopke (the oldest port wine house) wine and chocolate tasting

ABOUT THIS VLOG
➡ It's finally time for another adventure in Northern Portugal, where so many of you guys have said that this is the REAL Portugal, where you get REAL Portuguese food. Now we get to see if you are right!
We were invited on this trip by Marco Neiva from Oh My Media who also has a vlog.
It's a so-called Fam-Trip, where influencers and journalists are invited with the purpose of promoting an area. In this case it's Baixo Tamega, which is close to Douro Valley.
The Fam-Trip is three days long with an action-packed program from morning to evening.
On our first day we meet all the people at the wonderful hotel, Monverde Wine Experience Hotel, where we enjoyed a superb wine-tasting of some of the best wines from the area of Vinho Verde, which we learned is NOT a green wine, as there is no such thing!
After the wine-tasting we went to the beautiful town of Amarante that is a hotspot for Portuguese culture and history. This town is so charming and beautiful that we instantly bookmarked this for another trip, as we only had the evening here to enjoy Portuguese food at the amazing Restaurant Ze Da Calcada. It really was Portuguese food at its best!
NEW HERE?

2010 was very interesting. The activity of our company went very well. We had growth both in export and domestic sales. Our activity in port wine and Douro wine increased. And in the tourist (sector) we saw an increase in visits to these, the most visited cellars in the world. We went from 150-thousand tourists to almost 170-thousand visits a year.
8. Wide of wood vats in the Calem cellar
SOUNDBITE (Galician): Ignacio Franco, Finance Manager, Sogevinus (wine company):
We are seeing that also the United States and Canada are markets that are demanding more of our products, which is also the case of Nordic countries. This has been a very cold winter in the north of Europe and this has seen an increase in the consumption of our wines in Nordic countries. Russia has seen important growth. With Brazil, which has strong ties to Portugal, there has been strong growth.

11. SOUNDBITE: (Portuguese) Luciano Pereira, President of the Institute of Porto and Douro Wines:
You have to look at the crisis and understand it as something that causes change in the economy at a certain point in time. So if we know how to look at it and find the windows of opportunity, we can make this crisis not a problem, but a crisis for growth.

STORYLINE:
Portugal will release one (b) billion Euros (1.35 (b) US dollars) in Treasury bonds on Wednesday as part of attempts to shake off its credit crisis, but while the economic outlook is bleak, there is one sector of the Portuguese economy that continues to grow.
In the northern Portuguese city of Porto, its alcoholic namesake and most famous export is experiencing more demand than ever before.
Since the 17th century the export of port wine has been an intrinsic part of the region's economy.
Producers such as Sogevinus, a holding of five of some of the most prominent port wine brands including Calem, are confident heading into 2011.
Sogevinus Finance Manager, Ignacio Franco, says 170-thousand tourists visited the company's Porto cellars in 2010, up 20-thousand on the previous year.
The activity of our company went very well. We had growth both in export and domestic sales. Our activity in port wine and Douro wine increased, he said on Tuesday.
Franco added that Sogevinus increased sales last year in Nordic countries, the United States, Canada, Russia and Brazil.
2010 total bottled sales from across the region were more than 368 (m) million Euros, up 5.3 percent from 2009, according to the Institute of Porto and Douro Wines.
The Institute's President Lucian Pereira is upbeat about the future.
You have to look at the crisis and understand it as something that causes change in the economy at a certain point in time. So if we know how to look at it and find the windows of opportunity, we can make this crisis not a problem, but a crisis for growth, he said.
Debt-stressed Portugal is scrambling to avoid a bailout like the ones provided last year to fellow eurozone countries Greece and Ireland, and the government introduced additional debt-reduction measures on 1 January.
The Bank of Portugal predicts the extra pay cuts and tax hikes will bring a recession in 2011 for the second time in three years.

10 Things to do in Porto, Portugal Travel Guide Video Transcript: (OPORTO)
Lisbon is beautiful, but Porto is magical. We arrived in Porto with our taxi driver’s words still ringing in our ears, and we’re happy to say, the city did not disappoint!
Our time in Porto was spent sipping on Port wine, soaking in the views across the Douro River, wandering through the hilly streets, and marvelling at buildings covered in blue tiles.
In this travel guide, we’re going to share a little bit of Porto’s magic with you, and also show you some of the things you too can see, eat, and drink when you visit Porto!
Known as the Chapel of Souls, this church is covered in tiles that represent moments in the life of Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Catherine.
This bookstore is a feast for the eyes. The bookstore was even frequented by JK Rowling when she taught English in Porto, and it’s reported to have been an inspiration in her Harry Potter series.
We continued our walk downhill until we reached the São Bento Train Station.
Porto Cathedral is one of the oldest landmarks in the city with cloisters where the walls are covered in blue tiles.
We reached the neighbourhood of Ribeira, which sits right on the shores of the Douro River. This neighbourhood is lined with many sidewalk cafes, bars, and restaurants, so it’s a nice place to rest your legs and do a bit of people watching. Feeling hungry we wandered down some of the back streets until we found a small restaurant serving up local specialities.
We made time for one more attraction: the Church of Saint Francis.
The Bridge we had all been waiting for was Dom Luis the first Bridge, which spans the Douro River. The lower deck carries regular traffic with narrow walkways for those on foot, and the upper deck is reserved for pedestrians and the metro lines.
For the best views of Porto, you need to walk the upper deck!
There was only one thing on our minds: visit one of the many wineries that line this side of the river! We ended up walking into Croft for a wine tasting without need for an appointment, and this turned out to be one of our favourite activities in Porto!
Filled to the brim with port wine, cheese and chocolate, we enjoyed a light stroll along the Douro River, watching the boats bob in the water.
That’s a wrap for our visit to Porto! We hope you guys enjoyed following along and that you got a few ideas for your own trip. If you have any other suggestions of fun things to do in and around Porto, feel free to share those with travellers in the comments below.
This is part of our Travel in Portugal video series showcasing Portuguese food, Portuguese culture and Portuguese cuisine.
