Today the Winkworth Arboretum is managed by the National Trust, but the green area used to be private property. In 1936, Dr. Wilfrid Fox acquired the area and started planting tree species from all over the world, including Canadian maple and Japanese cherry trees. It is a nice walk (dogs on leash!), but it must be very close to an airport as the sound of passing jets was quite loud.
It is very close to Godalming, a cute Surrey village, where we stopped for a roast, before walking to the old churchyard. Here a brass band was playing for the delight of the villagers relaxing on the lawn.

Take a walk through the still glades of Winkworth's woodland in late April and you'll find one of Britain's most beloved natural sights: bluebells growing en masse on the woodland floor. A woodland covered with a carpet of these pretty blue-purple coloured wild flowers is a sign that spring is well and truly here…although with the wonderful weather some of us have been having in the UK lately, you might wonder if summer’s actually arrived early! Bluebells woodland - Hyacinthoides non-scripta - Lotklukkulilja - and also Yellow Rhododendrons, Cowslip - Primula veris - Primrose - Primula vulgaris - and garlic mustard, Ramsons, or Wild garlic, carpet on the woodland floor in spring.Greater Stitchwort, Stellaria holostea; Stitchwort, Addersmeat, flowering.

Greater Stitchwort grows in woods, roadside verges, hedgerows and grassy banks. It has many other common names including 'Wedding Cakes', 'Star-of-Bethlehem', 'Daddy's-shirt-buttons' and 'Snapdragon' - the latter because its stems are brittle and easily break. It's pretty star-shaped, white flowers bloom from April to June; as the seed capsules ripen, they can be heard 'popping' in late spring. Greater Stitchwort has five white petals, each deeply notched and almost divided into two. Its green leaves are grass-like in appearance and its brittle stems are square. Greater Stitchwort has larger flowers (2-3cm across) than its relative, Lesser Stitchwort (0.5-1cm across). See more:

Wander through the Arboretum at the right time and you'll be hard-pressed not to come across a pretty patch of purple. For the best views, follow the Spring Walk and you'll head right into Bluebell Wood, where the most spectacular swathes await. This route also takes you through Magnolia Wood, which - if the weather has been kind - may be in bloom at the same time. Bluebell season is hugely popular with visitors across the National Trust. To make sure the purple swathes return every year, it's crucial to look after them as best we can. We do our part by removing the non-native Spanish bluebell, managing the woodland carefully and allowing the dead flowers time to re-seed before removing. You can help make a difference as well. Trampling on bluebell leaves impedes their ability to create energy and reproduce, reducing their chances of reappearing in subsequent years; so you can help by avoiding walking through the bluebells and keeping to designated pathways. Remember, too, that bluebells are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, so please resist the temptation to pick them!. See more:

Winkworth Arboretum is set in some 46 hectares. Whilst it is well known for its Autumn colours it is a pleasant place to visit any time of the year.
In Spring there are drifts of bluebells, magnolias and cherry blossom. The azalea walk, which is a mass of colour at the end of April, leads to the boathouse which overlooks the lake.

This weekend we explore the beautiful Winkworth Arboretum!
Winkworth Arboretum is a National Trust-owned arboretum in the spread-out civil parish of Busbridge between Godalming and Hascombe, south-west Surrey, England.
Winkworth Arboretum exhibits large collections of azalea, rhododendron, and holly on slopes leading down to landscaped garden lakes. Gertrude Jekyll explored the woods in the early 20th century. The exotic trees were planted from 1938 by Wilfrid Fox.
